How will you vote on 5th May?Voting for the 2011 Local Elections will take place on Thursday 5 May 2011 at 73 polling stations across Bournemouth between 7am and 10pm. These elections will also be combined with the Alternative Vote Referendum. For Westbourne residents the local polling

station is the West Cli Baptist Church Main Hall on the corner of Poole Road and Grosvenor Road. About The Alternative Vote (AV) The UK currently uses the ‘rst past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. The Alternative Vote system sees voters rank candidates in order of preference in single constituencies. People can nominate as many preferences as they like. Only rst preference votes are counted initially. Anyone getting more than 50% of these is elected automatically. If that doesn't happen, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and their second choices allocated to the remaining candidates in a second round of voting. More new businesses ock to WestbourneDuring an economic downturn reported heavily in the media it is encouraging to see a number of new additions to Westbourne’s unique shopping district. time it’s for maintenance to the electrical cables, lighting and conduit boxes. The work is due to take 12 weeks. All shops in the arcade are unaected and remain open for the duration of the work so please continue to venture through the arcade and see how the works progress over the coming weeks.

Westbourne is fast becoming THE wedding and civil partnership destination for the whole of Dorset. We are proud to highlight the diverse range of wedding related products and services all within walking distance of each other in Westbourne. We have included as many local businesses as possible who can help make your special day one to truly remember. It can be a stressful time when organising your wedding but with such a great selection of shops available and plenty of places to eat, drink and meet you can’t go wrong. In our special wedding edition you can nd wedding dresses, jewellery, shoes, orists, photographers and a marvellous local venue for your big day. To complement the businesses and services mentioned in this edition we have set up a dedicated Wedding section in our online directory at www.westbourne.info with even more local wedding suppliers. If you or a family member are planning a wedding within Dorset then come and visit Westbourne for great deals, excellent service and advice on planning your special day.

Wedding on the Beach? If you want to get married on the sandy beaches of Bournemouth then you may be in luck. Bournemouth Council have applied for a beach hut to be licensed to conduct wedding ceremonies from as early as May 2011, with wedding receptions available at local venues. With the cost of going abroad skyrocketing, Bournemouth tourism board are hoping that this will provide a cheaper alternative and an exciting location to tie the knot.

One White Dress is Dorset’s premier vintage and designer bridal wear agency. Oering a unique selection of gowns ranging from original vintage wedding dresses to ex-sample and once worn designer creations. We spoke to sisters Katy and Annabelle about their concept, “We believe that just because you are not buying a brand new dress, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the enjoyable experience of choosing one of the most important elements of your wedding day.”Browsing the large collection, prices range from £200 - £2500 and there is a great range of styles, from simple elegant gowns to destination dresses and stunning ‘Cinderella’ ball gown style dresses. Annabelle told us more, “Our vintage collection ranges from the 1920’s to the 1970’s so if you are looking for the Hollywood glamour of the 30’s, Madmen curves of the 50’s or something quirky from the 70’s come and see us.”A unique concept that One White Dress oers is their ex-sample or worn once range of wedding dresses. “Some are once worn, some are ex- samples, all are beautiful! Typically our dresses are half price or less. Our once worn dresses are exactly that, dresses that have been worn once (probably for only a few hours), however, we will only take in dresses that have been professionally cleaned and are in excellent condition.”

So whether you are having a small informal ceremony or a huge celebration visit One White Dress and they will have a dress for you! To make an appointment call 01202 280063 or visit 24 Seamoor Road, Westbourne.

Pre-nuptialsfinancial planning from Jacqui Forrest

In planning your future together have you considered making a Pre-nuptial Agreement?Having an agreement in place is an important part of your nancial planning in the same way as making a Will or investing in life or critical illness cover.Essentially it is insurance against things going wrong. If you think about it, you insure your home against re or theft and so forth despite hoping it will never happen because you want the security of knowing that you are protected, just in case.Perhaps most importantly, the whole process of having such an agreement enables you both to fully and openly talk about your current nancial position and explore your expectations for the future – a good start to any relationship. If you would like a chat about making a Pre-nuptial Agreement, please contact Jacqui Forrest on 01202 802807.

Bon Anniversaire!15 years of Pâtisserie Angélique

Who would have thought that 15 years ago a highly trained French pâtissier from Brittany who spoke very little English would have become such an important part of many people’s pleasure in Westbourne, England.Philippe’s determination to stick to what he knew and was passionate about in terms of quality, size and consistency has paid o. He now has literally hundreds of convertees who visit Pâtisserie Angélique on a regular basis.

A recent customer survey has astounded his co-owner, Toby, by the following Philippe has created. Their customers range from 2 to 102 year olds with many people visiting 3 or 4 times a week. They come to enjoy morning coee, light snacks, full lunch time meals (they oer a no corkage fee BYO wine service) to full afternoon teas. Not forgetting, there is Philippe’s unique ace card of being able to make larger versions of all the individual cakes that he makes on the premises every day.

In France, trades description insist a business calling itself a Pâtisserie actually makes and bakes its produce on the premises, as does someone who calls their business a chocolatier. With Philippe’s 30 years of experience in both disciplines, Pâtisserie Angélique certainly qualies in both departments. Find out more over the next few pages.

Get 50% O Cakes and Drinks - 27th AprilTo celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Pâtisserie Angélique, Toby and Philippe would like to invite you along on the 27th April to enjoy half price cakes and drinks (excluding take away cakes).

Cod & Chips for £2?no catch, just catch of the day!

After the enourmous success of last years event, Chez Fred is back with a special £2 take-away oer.

Get down to Chez Fred on Seamoor Road on the 11th April and get classic cod and chips for just £2.

We spoke to Fred himself and asked what the day is all about, “it’s our way of saying a big ”Thank You” to our customers and also raising a heap of money for two great local causes. Every penny raised on the day will be donated to the Vicotria Education Centre and The Open Door Project, oering a free breakfast for the homeless and vulnerability housed at the West Cli Baptist Church.”If the event last year is anything to go by, you may need to wear comfy shoes and join the back of the queue as hundreds of customers will turn out to make the most of the oer. Chez Fred, previously voted “Best Fish and Chip Shop in Great Britain”, is a Westbourne institution and has been open since 1989. The special £2 price is reective of what you would have paid for cod and chips back in 1989. Next time you are in Chez Fred, have a look at the photos on the walls of all the stars that have enjoyed Fred’s cooking. You’ll be in good company with Prime Ministers, sports men and woman and manys stars from stage and screen!

West Cli Baptist ChurchAll about Easter with Chris Brockway

How do you respond to the following question - “What is the most important event in history?” Such a question will undoubtedly generate a variety of responses. Some might argue the case for the invention of the wheel or of the atomic bomb; others might suggest the events surrounding World War I or II; perhaps others will argue the case for some of the great sporting or cultural events of our times. At West Cli Baptist Church, as Christians, we would suggest that the death-defying resurrection of Jesus Christ is in fact the most important event in history!

How do you look at Jesus…? Whether you look at Him from the viewpoint of a skeptic or a believer, one thing is certain: Jesus has inuenced the thinking of the world in a way that no other person has. He is central to the centuries. He never wrote a word that we know of, yet His words fashion our laws. We date all time, forward and backward, from the date of His birth (B.C. - before Christ) or since His death (A.D. – “Anno Domini”). Every time you date a document or consult a calendar you pay silent tribute to the centrality of Jesus.

Browse through an art museum and you nd that artists through the ages have been captivated by Him. The greatest music ever written was written by men and women inuenced by Him. More books have been written about Jesus and His life and ministry than about any other person in history. His impact is monumental!

Could the death-defying events of Jesus be the greatest event in history…? We think so and very much look forward to welcoming you as we celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus this Easter-time.

Westbourne’s Best Kept Secretfind out about the Argyll Bowling Club

Argyll Bowling Club has been a part of Westbourne since it was founded in 1905 and is still around today, yet surprisingly there are many local residents who don't even know we exist! Perhaps this is because the club is located on the West cli Overdrive and many people just park their cars and go down to the beach not realising there is a bowling club there at all. We spoke to Sylvia Nagarkar who told us more, “You would be hard pressed to nd a bowling club in such a prime location where the views alone are some of the best on the south coast. The sub-tropical gardens of Alum Chine are just across the road from the club with pathways leading to the sandy beaches. A truly ideal location. We are very fortunate to have two bowling greens and can accommodate league matches and friendly games throughout the bowling season.”

There is a public cafe serving meals, snacks, drinks and ice creams. As a bonus, they also have a licensed bar which is open during friendly games and most league matches. Sylvia told us more about a drive to encourage new members, “We will be having Open Days on Sunday May 1st and Sunday June 26th, when anyone can come along and have a go at playing bowls for FREE. We will supply the bowls and shoes plus any guidance and instruction. We welcome people of all ages. This will be an ideal opportunity for you to come along and have a go or just pop in for a tea, coee and a chat with our members. If you like it, you may even want to join the club. If you are already an experienced bowler, you will be even more welcome!” Visit our website: www.argyllbowlingclub.co.uk

Tasteful Gifts & Photographic Studioan exciting new addition to Westbourne

Number 83 is owned and run by Claire and Steve Aldersley who relocated their family to Bournemouth in 2009. Claire is a professional photographer and noticed a gap in the market for both studio space and a unique gift shop, featuring products from local manufactures. This was the driving force behind the decision to set up Number 83 and Studio 83 in Westbourne. Claire explained, “After studying design at Bournemouth University , I struggled to nd a local studio that I could hire to complete some

of my work and display my art. I also have a passion for gifts and thought this would be a good combination to display art and sell local products, gadgets and tasteful gifts for all occassions.”As we take a look around Number 83 we can see gifts ranging from luxury bags & accessories made from recycled re hose, to stunning glass jewellery red in the New Forest. The gallery hosts undiscovered local talent from our home town Arts Uni & some annoyingly lovely people who juggle jobs, family and a creative air, with breath taking photography of the Jurassic Coast, glass art, recycled beach otsam on canvas and vintage children’s posters to name a few.If you’re a yummy mummy, you can now breath a sigh of relief that you now have a local store to buy girlfriends, children & loved ones (including yourself!) something thoughtful & individual. “Studio 83, situated above the gift shop is an extensive professional photographic studio. Available for family portrait shoots, product & food photography and more which can all be oered by local reputable photographers who can hire the space on a daily basis.”To nd out more visit Number 83 on Poole Road or visit them online: www.number83.net Number 83
