BetWeen 1502 And 1866, more than 11

million Africans were brought to the New

World, but only 450,000 arrived in the

United States. The rest were taken to the

Caribbean and Latin America. Renowned

Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

reveals this untold story and its lasting

cultural impact in Black in Latin America,

a new four-part series premiering this

month on THIRTEEN.

With the broadcast of African Ameri-

can Lives in 2006, Professor Gates made

history as the first filmmaker to employ

genealogy and genetic science to provide

an understanding of African American

history. In Black in Latin America, he

visits Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Repub-

lic, Haiti, Mexico, and Peru to discover

how Latin Americans of African descent

live, how their countries acknowledge—

or deny—their African past, and how race

and African ancestry influence the mul-

ticultural worlds of the Caribbean and

Latin America.

“Few of us realize how ‘black’ the

cultures of South America actually are.

Since the sixteenth century, the black

presence has been inextricably inter-

twined in the cultures and economies

of the six countries we examine in the

series,” said Professor Gates. “This se-

ries—the third in a trilogy—is a journey

of discovery, in which we unveil these

often hidden worlds that black people

created in countries we don’t think of as

black. How many of us realize that black

saints are worshipped in these countries,

and that the first black president of any

country in the New World was not Barack

Obama, it was Vicente Guerrero who was

elected president of Mexico in 1829.”

“We're particularly excited about this

series because it breaks so much new

ground,” said Stephen Segaller, Vice

President of Content at WNET. “It serves

the audience in two ways—bringing them

material they won’t find anywhere else

and presenting important stories about

diverse communities in the Americas that

will resonate with our own immensely

diverse New York area audience.”

Funding for Black in Latin America is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Public Television

Stations and Viewers Like You. Additional funding is provided by the Ford Foundation, Richard Gilder and

Alphonse Fletcher.
