Dear Friends, Today, after a good lunch, David Whitten and I decided to take a drive. We headed north out of town and just kept going, turning here and there on this street and that. It wasn’t too long before I was completely turned around and at the mercy of my driver as to whether or not I’d ever find my way home. We drove past farms and people’s homes. I noticed wild daffodils growing in open pastures and old barns in different stages of decay. The cows and mailboxes didn’t seem to mind us going past, so I took that as an affirmation that what David and I were doing was okay. We talked about all kinds of things, some important and some not. We stopped by a little creek that David said was navigable, and he told me where it came out on the Elk River down by Don and Dianne Payne’s farm. We thought about going back to town to pick up a canoe, but the chill in the air and the hazards that would await us made us change our minds. David did get to do a little business by checking out some repairs on a house he was inspecting, but I was just along for the ride and enjoyed every minute of it. How often do you take the opportunity to take a drive out in the country? It’s amazing what lies in store for you, especially if you invite someone who’s been around longer than you. Stories can be told, history lessons can be learned, and you can develop a better appreciation for the community in which you live or work. Now that spring has sprung, take some time and invite a friend to go with you (or to take you) on a drive out in the country. God’s presence can be seen all around, and it’s a nice way of practicing Sabbath time. Don’t get in too much of a hurry, people will eventually be able to pass you. Just soak in the scenery and enjoy the time that you will have with God and your fellow rider/driver – you’ll all be happier persons for doing so! Grace and peace, David Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (Matt. 6:28-29)

FROM DAVID'S PEN . . .

Dear Friends,

Today, after a good lunch, David Whitten and I decided to take a drive. We headed north out of town and just kept going, turning here and there on this street and that. It wasn’t too long before I was completely turned around and at the mercy of my driver as to whether or

not I’d ever find my way home.

Grace and peace,

─ David

Nell Stapleton Smith ─ born November 29, 1921 in Dothan, Alabama. She grew up in Marianna, Florida and graduated from Jackson County High School in 1939. She attended and graduated from FSCW, now Florida State University, in 1943.

She was sworn into the Naval Reserve on July 12, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida and reported for duty on July 31, 1943 at the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman School, Northampton, Maine. She served as an ap-prentice seaman until August 27, 1943, when she was sworn in as a midshipman. She became an ensign on September 21, 1943 and was appointed assistant paymaster with the rank of ensign. Ensign Smith re-ported for duty at Supply and Accounts school at Cambridge, Maine on October 1, 1943.

Upon completion of supply School, she was sent to Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia reporting there on January 21, 1944. She was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (JG) SC (W) on January 9, 1945. She served as assistant disbursing officer at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Glynco, Georgia. There she served as disbursing officer until November 29, 1945 when she was released from active duty. During her tenure in the WAVES she also met and married Frank Brobson Lutz on August, 1945.

Nell and Frank lived in Millville, New Jersey until 1952 when they moved to Athens, Alabama to raise their three (3) children: Brobson, Tom, and Ruth. Frank worked at Chemstrand Corporation in Decatur and Nell immediately became involved in community, church, and school activities. When not tending to children she spent her time cooking, fishing, sewing, and substitute teaching. She was also involved in several clubs, bridge, circles, and study club, and enjoyed some other hobbies. After Frank retired they enjoyed doing some traveling, spending time with the grandchildren, and the spent a lot of time at their camp on the Elk River.

Nell received the DAR Community Service Award for her community service and in 2009 she participated in the Honor Flight. She and Frank participated in the veterans Parade in November 2010 when he served as the Honorary Grand Marshal and was honored as being the oldest living WW II Veteran in Limestone County.

Nell continues to enjoy cooking, fishing, reading, attending Bible Study and church activi-ties. She keeps up with her many friends all over the world via email. She received her first computer as a 50th anniversary gift in 1995 and now keeps two operating at all times.
