School Searches and Illegal Drug s

At various points during the school year we request the cooperation of local la w

enforcement to conduct a search utilizing trained police dogs and their handlers .

When we do this there are always key questions asked by parents and the public . I

would like to share some of the more pertinent questions and the answers .

Is this a one time Event ?

Our plan and past practice is that we do random searches of this nature periodically.

From time to time we do have discipline situations related to the use or possession of

illegal drugs . Even though these events represent an extremely small percent of ou r

student population, this is very troubling . As a school we feel it is important to d o

what we can to deter the presence of illegal drugs on our campus . There is n o

question that drugs are a negative influence in our community and diminish th e

culture of our building .

Is itlegal for the school to request and conduct a search of this nature ?

Yes it is . We have previously consulted our school attorney as well as case law prior t o

initiating our original search . These types of searches are fairly common in school s

across the nation . Searches may include the parking lot as well as the building .

Arestudents safe during these searches ?

Whenever we choose to bring trained police dogs onto the high school campus, ou r

first task is to conduct the search in a manner that will not create an unsafe situation .

During any such search, students are confined to classrooms until the search has bee n

completed . During any such search we have additional staff present to assist student s

who may have entered the campus or building during the . search . Our goal is safety

for all during any such search .

Why conduct such a search ?

Just like with the administration of breathalyzers upon entrance to any of our dances ,

our objective is deterence . It is our hope that once students realize that detection i s

possible, students will make the decision not to bring such substances onto the schoo l

campus .

Student Absence (308)535-7105 Ext3

Please remember it is the responsibility of

the parent/guardian to notify the school attendance

office of all absences. If there is no notification,

the absence is recorded as a truancy .

Unfortunately, if this is the situation, the end resul t

could be that your child may in the end not receive

credit for one or more classes . Your cooperation is

greatly appreciated . Please help us to ensure our

students' success by doing everything you can to

be sure your child is here and on time each an d

every day . Their immediate and future succes s

depends on it !

ELECTRONIC DEVICE SA reminder that cell phones and

other electronic devices are

permitted as long as they remain

turned off and out of sight during

school hours . See page 16 of the

Student Handbook if you have

questions .

Senior Study Halls for the 2010-201 1

School Year

Juniors have the opportunity to earn the

privilege of not having to attend study halls theirsenior year. In order for that to happen severalrequirements have to be met. Written parentpermission is required . If a parent feels their seniorstudent should remain in a study hall that is okay.

In order for a student to be considered a senior,

he/she must be on schedule to graduate with their

class in May 2011 . In addition the senior to be

must have a record of good attendance (including

being tardy) and no significant discipline

infractions .

M EN I N GOCOCCAL VACCINATIO NMany people think that meningococcal disease is onl ya problem on college campuses. But what you need t oknow is that adolescents in high school are also a tincreased danger from this serious and potentiall ylife-threatening infection .

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection .It can cause meningitis---a severe swelling of the brai nand spinal cord. It is very dangerous because it oftenbegins with symptoms that can be mistaken for othe rcommon viral illnesses such as the flu . But unlikemore common infections, meningococcal disease ca nget worse very rapidly and it can kill an otherwis ehealthy young person in 48 hours or less .

Meningococcal vaccination can greatly reduce the ris kof betting this very serious and potentially deadly{disease ., For more information, ask your health careprovider today .

If your child receives this immunization, please be sur eto notify the nurse's office of the date received so

his/her health record is kept current .

Dear Parent ,

The end of the school year is a very exciting and hectic time for parents of Juniors and Seniors . Prom

decisions are being made and graduation parties are being planned . But with all this fun comes the danger o f

underage consumption of alcohol and all the negative effects that could result, such as impaired learning an d

memory loss, lifelong craving for alcohol, rape, assault, pregnancy, serious accidents, and even death (ca r

crashes, drowning or suicide) .

The Lincoln County Attorney's Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, North Platt e

Police Department, Citizens' Alcohol & Drug Forum, and Community Connections Substance Abus e

Prevention System are working with North Platte Public Schools to encourage you to help reduce the use of

alcohol (and other drugs) among minors. As you enter into this season of fun and celebrations, we ask you t oremember the following :

•Do not serve or allow alcohol at any party you are hosting .

-Know where your child is spending time; verify that there will be parental supervision and that it wil lbe alcohol free .

•Make it clear to your youth that you DO NOT approve of him/her drinking alcohol .The legal drinking age is 21 — no exceptions .

•A minor who consumes alcohol is violating the law and is risking his/her life as well as the lives o fothers .

▪An adult who provides alcohol to minors is subject to arrest and is risking that child's life .

Please help protect your child's bright future by providing a safe, alcohol-free season of celebrations for you r

son or daughter .

What Exactly Does The Poison Center Do ?

A common answer would be they help children when they get poisoned . Of course, that would be correct but itonly scratches the surface of what actually happens at your poison center .

You might be surprised to learn that only half of the 42,451 calls received by the Poison Center last year wer econcerning young children. More adults die from poisonings than children . Studies show that calling a poison cente rreduces unnecessary hospitalizations, saves money, reduces injuries, and improves patient care . The call is free to thegeneral public .

Call the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 when . . .• Children put something in their mouth besides food . Children are naturally curious and everything they pick u p

goes into their mouth .• You accidentally give too much/ or take too much medicine .• You need help identifying what your medications are .• You're worried about drug interactions .• You eat something that has made you sick .• You got something in your eye or breathed in something that doesn't feel right .• You're not sure your furnace is working properly .• You're not sure if the plants at your home are dangerous for children and animals .• You're wondering what precautions should be taken when applying pesticides to your house/yard .• You have been stung by a bee or bitten by an insect ?• Fumes at work have made you ill .• You're having an adverse reaction to a medication or a food .• You're worried about a friend or relative who has taken something to harm themselves .• You want to know if a product or medicine has been recalled .• You want to order free stickers, magnets or other teaching materials on poisonings .• You're just not sure of what to do about a poisoning and you want to talk to a nurse immediately .

Those are just some of the reasons you should call the poison center . Remember, you can talk to a nurse who i sspecially trained to answer your questions . Over 70% of the time you will not have to make a trip to the hospital or doctorsoffice. Calling a poison center saves millions of dollars in unnecessary medical costs . The poison center is a bargain intoday's world and we all love a bargain .

Since 1957 the Poison Center has had the privilege of working with the citizens of Nebraska to be your poisoncenter .
