WAC as the season nears the midpoint of a march toward a 5th straight WAC Championship and another trip to the post-season.

Attendance is up for the year, the team is jelling and Jim Pardini is making it easy once again to go straight to the game from work and enjoy his mouth-watering clam chowder, chili or one of those big sausage sandwiches. Good crowds, exciting baseball and great food is why it’s called the national past-time.

Hope all of our readers have had a chance to come out and see how well Coach Batesole has merged the incoming student-athletes with the returning players. If not there are plenty of home games remaining and after the hail storm on April 12 the weather man has promised us beautiful spring weather for the remainder of the season. So grab your sunscreen and come out to Beiden Field for some of the best entertainment in the Valley.

The Dugout Club thanks everyone for their continuing support of the Fresno State Baseball Program and for their attendance at the Wall of Fame and Double-Play Dinners, their purchases of auction items provided by great local businesses and their participation at our Golf Tournament at the newly renovated Eagle Springs Golf and Country Club. Your participation gives the Club the ability to support the program in many ways and whether it’s a Saturday or Sunday Brunch for the team, a Spring BBQ for the General Membership or replacing the halo around home plate or renovating the Beiden Field Sound System, it’s your membership that’s making it happen. The Dugout Club nominating committee, composed of club past presidents, meets annually to propose the slate of officers and board members for the annual election. The officers are President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer. The term of office is one year. Newly elected Board members serve a one year term and each re-elected member serves a three year term. Terms run from July 1st after election through June 30 of the following year.

For over 30 years the Dugout Club’s mission is to promote fan support and encourage interest and participation in Fresno State baseball and assist in fundraising for athletic department-approved projects. We accomplish these goals through these club-sponsored events:

- Wall of Fame Dinner - Golf Tournament - Double Play Dinner- Parent Partners Program- Player/Parents BBQ- Sunday Players Brunches- General Membership Spring BBQ - Club Membership

Our fundraising efforts have helped complete the recent renovation of the playing field and locker rooms, and several future projects are in the planning. Anyone interested in serving on the Board of Directors should contact any current board member or President Ron Primavera at (559) 435-3810.

Construction on the locker room renovation project was completed during the offseason and the new lockers and sponsorship plaques were in place at the beginning of the 2010 season. This project was funded by a $100,000 donation from the Gib and Ruthelaine Rambo Foundation and funds raised by the Dugout Club through memberships, dinners, golf tournaments and the purchase of lockers by former players, teams and parents. There are still a few locker sponsorships available for $2500 with a 2-year payment plan. Plaques will be engraved with your name, team, teammate, or business on an individual locker. For sponsor information contact the BDF at (559) 244-5600.

We would like to acknowledge the following locker sponsors:

The Fresno State baseball team was busy during the off season with practice, weights, school and community service. The Bulldogs spent a couple hours after practice on Oct. 23 reading with students at Kratt Elementary.

Pitcher Zac Bischoff, outfielders Dusty Robinson and Steve Detwiler read some of their favorite children’s books to a group of young students. The purpose of the event is to get students excited about reading.

“It was a lot of fun. It was cool to see kids in the community and

The Fresno State baseball team is known for its success on the field. The Bulldogs have won four straight WAC Titles and made four consecutive trips to an NCAA Regional, along with a National title in 2008. The Dogs are taking that winning attitude and way of life into the classroom.

The Bulldogs had 16 players earn a 3.0 GPA or better for the 2009 fall semester. The team finished the semester with a perfect APR rate of 1000 and a team GPA of 2.9.

“We are excited for the 2010 season to begin and to watch the progression of what was an outstanding freshman class both on and off the field in 2009,” said head coach Mike Batesole. “On the field we earned our fourth consecutive WAC ring and we are now in a position that every player in our program has a ring for EVERY year they have been a Bulldog.”

Aside from winning four consecutive WAC Titles, the Bulldogs are stepping it up in the class room. Of the 32 student-athletes on the roster, 16 earned at least a 3.0 GPA last semester. And of those 16, five of the Bulldogs had a 3.5 GPA or higher.

see them get excited about reading,” said Bischoff. “It was cool to see how much we mean to them and see what we are doing is influencing people outside of baseball.”

There were 35 students in attendance and they got an opportunity to ask some of their favorite Bulldogs about baseball, college and homework.

This is the second year that the baseball team has attended the event at Kratt Elementary.

Theresa Kurtz, Fresno State Athletics Communications

“In the classroom they have been fantastic earning an annual (2008-2009) Academic Progress Rate of 990, 2.9 Team GPA and we are on track to have all 16 of our last 16 seniors to have finished their careers with a degree, or on track to graduate with only one additional semester,” said Batesole. “We are also proud to see no sophomore let down in sight as we finished the 2009 Fall with a perfect Team APR of 1000 and another 2.9 GPA. Degrees and rings, that’s what it’s all about.”

Legendary Fresno State baseball coach Bob Bennett has been elected to the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. Inductees are elected by more than 110 nationwide voters, including current and retired coaches, members of the media, and previous inductees. The induction ceremony will take place July 1 in Lubbock Texas.

“I’m flattered by it and thrilled by it,” Bennett said. “It’s quite an honor to be elected by your peers and there were 95 coaches who voted for it.”

At Fresno State Bennett inherited a program that was enjoying a successful run under former head coach Pete Beiden and took it to another level. He helped lead the renovation of Beiden Field into a first-class facility and was largely responsible for the Bulldogs becoming a model in the area of facilities, ticket sales, fan support and community pride. Under his leadership Fresno State was consistently a national leader in attendance and fan support, not to mention posting 26 consecutive winning seasons, two College World Series appearances in 1988 and 1991, and 1,302 career victories. In 1988 he led Fresno State to its first No. 1 ranking and was named

the NCAA Coach of the Year. During his tenure, he won or shared 17 league titles and advanced to the NCAA Regional 21 times. More than 100 of his players went on to careers in professional baseball.

Bennett says the greatest thrill of his career was the individual improvement made by his players. The quality of their character and abilities made him most

proud. “When it comes down to awards,” he said, “you’re only as good as the people you’re surrounded by.”

Bennett was also heavily involved in college baseball at the national and international levels, serving as president of the American Baseball Coaches Association and on their Hall of Fame and All-America committees. He served as head coach of the U.S. National Team in 1983 and 1986, and as a member of the national team’s coaching staff in 1977 and 1979. Bennett is a member of the Fresno State Baseball Wall of Fame, the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame as a charter member.

As a coach, teacher and author Bob Bennett developed the special ability to motivate and inspire his peers, his players and his community. In his recently published book “1302 Winning Quotes for Coaches”, one of Bennett’s quotes can be applied to his own remarkable career: “If you try to give more than you get, you will always get more than you give.”
