Spring has officially arrived, and we have been enjoying an early daylight saving time, giving us more opportunity to enjoy our favorite activities

– and just in time for this month’s driving activities. On April 11, Richard Shaw and Lloyd Martinez host our first of two autocross events at the Camarillo Airport. These are always well attended and draw both novice and veteran competitors from throughout the area. Here’s an opportunity to test or expand your skill level and enjoy the performance of your Porsche. Spectators are welcome, and there is no charge to watch the action. You’ll find an entry form in this edition on page 7.

On April 18, learn how to run a time-speed-distance rally from experts Joe Boucher and Joe Schneider at the Rally School to be held at Schneider AutoHaus in Santa Barbara. You’ll enjoy a classroom session as well as a practical exercise and end the day with lunch. Put your new skills to work a week later on April 25 when the two Joes host the El Camino Real XXVI Rally, which will begin in Camarillo and traverse some wonderful back roads in Ventura County. If you have never participated in a rally, now is the time to give it a try. You’ll find registration forms for both events in this edition (pages 8 & 10).

I hope you were among the 116 members and guests who joined us for the March 7 Camarillo breakfast meeting at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ventura. You got a preview of our venue for the 45th Anniversary Party we’ll host on June 14. Save the date and register early. This is one party you won’t want to miss. We’ll also return to the hotel for our Holiday Party on December 19.

Space is quickly filling up for Nick’s tour to the Gold Country during the Memorial Day weekend. If you plan to go, fill out the registration form (page 13) and send it in soon. It promises to be a well organized and enjoyable weekend event you’ll remember for years to come.

Oscar Briones said a word of appreciation to Steve Kaller for organizing the Reagan Library tour with short notice. It was a re-cord-setting event with 103 people attending. He spoke about the March 29 Santa Barbara Autocross and the April 11 Cama-rillo Autocross, encouraging people to sign up and get involved. “Stretch your comfort level and test the agility of your car!”

Jeff Parker reminded the crowd to sign up for the March 28 Poppy Run. 68 people with 37 cars are already set for the tour.

New members attending the breakfast included George Ar-godale from Simi Valley with his 1999 986 and Carol Ann Wolf-gang of Ventura, driving a 2001 986S.

Mary Ann Pare from Oakview has transferred into the Santa Barbara Region from California Inland and was in attendance.

Enjoying their first breakfast meeting were members Jarrod Bradley of Santa Barbara, Kristina & Scott Perry of Santa Barbara, Desmond Warren of Carpinteria, and Candice & Randy Dzailo of Ventura, who are recent transfers from Reno.

Guests incluced Nova Clite, guest of new member Carol Ann Wolfgang; Ed Weigman’s son, Brian, and his two friends, Josh Terry and Andrew Savin; The Mann Family and Kavanagh Family were also well represented. They were there to support the Cys-tic Fibrosis Foundation and the club’s presenta-tion of its charity contri-bution.

The new venue seemed to please those in attendance. We hope to see you at the next Ca-marillo Breakfast meet-ing April 4. It will be held at the newly renovated Way-Point Café. =

Since the Way-Point Café was closed for renovations, the Ca-marillo Breakfast was moved up the 101 to the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ventura. The new location attracted 116

members arriving in 59 Porsches. The weather was beautiful and all attendees enjoyed a tasty breakfast buffet in the hotel banquet room.

Club President Dave Stone gave a warm welcome to all, and introduced the hotel’s banquet manager, Chadi, who had ar-ranged the room for us on short notice. By meeting here, we were given the opportunity to see the venue for our 45th Anni-versary Party which will be held on June 14, and our Holiday Par-ty scheduled for December 19. Remember to save these dates!

Gillian Stone, a representative of the Cystic Fibrosis Founda-tion, was presented a replica check for $10,005, the amount of money raised for CFF by our region last year. Nick and Olga Lia-kas, Carol Mathieu, Shannon Kavanagh and Karen Turek all par-ticipated in the donation presentation. Gillian spoke to us briefly about cystic fibrosis and the continuing research and work be-ing carried out by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. SBR member John Mann expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation for the club’s support for CFF.

Santa Barbara Region member John Cliff made a brief pre-sentation on behalf of Casa Pacifica, one of our adopted chari-ties for 2009. Casa Pacifica helps abused and neglected children or at-risk children and their families in the Ventura and Santa Barbara County areas. Ten to fifteen percent of their 24-million dollar budget comes from people like us. During difficult eco-nomic times they need our help even more. More information will follow as to how our region will become involved to assist this worthy cause.

Members Joe Schneider and Joe Boucher gave a presenta-tion on their upcoming rally school on April 18 at Schneider Au-tohaus in Santa Barbara and the Zone 8 El Camino Real XXVI Rally on April 25, which starts at Denny’s Restaurant in Camarillo.

Past President Carolyn Ewbank reminded the group about the upcoming Festival of Speed at the Autoclub Speedway in Fontana April 3-5. Volunteers are needed.

Dave Stone introduced Walt Branscome of Santa Barbara Auto Group, Keith Goldberg, General Sales Manager of Rus-nak Westlake Porsche, and Adam Chirchick of Rusnak Westlake Porsche. Keith brought a beautiful, white Cayman S for all of us to inspect and admire.

A Whale of A Show At Moby Dick’sBy Becky Lundberg & Jeff Parker

Photos by Ray Jordan & John Alfenito

A young humpback whale frolicking and cavorting in the harbor attracted the attention of club members and members of the public Saturday morning during the

breakfast meeting. Evidently the whale was attracted to the 40 classy German automobiles aligned on the pier.

President David Stone gave a warm welcome to all 66 attend-ees. He gave a special welcome to Joe Boucher of Nipomo, past president of SBR, who is celebrating 40 years of PCA member-ship, and to Steven Finberg, Master Porsche Technician from the Santa Barbara Auto Group.

Janice Herndon, membership chairperson, introduced new members: Peter and Josie Bower from Goleta, who own a 1974 911, and first time Santa Barbara attendees. Also at breakfast was Dan Blesky of Moorpark, who owns a 1971 911T. Dan was in the Santa Barbara re-gion, moved to Virginia and has now returned. Another at-tendee was Desmond Warren, who owns a 1989 991 and lives in Carpinteria. Charles Nelson was a guest attending from Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Re-gion with his 2007 Boxster S.

David Stone reminded us about the Festival of Speed April 3-5 at the Autoclub Speedway in Fontana. Volunteers are still needed, and the contact people are Carolyn Ewbank and Mike Hodson.

Linda Kuckenbaker spoke about the upcoming Porsche Ma-demoiselle Society (P.M.S.) outing to the Santa Anita Raceway on April 18th. RSVP to Karen Turek by April 6 at [email protected] or Linda Kuckenbaker at [email protected]. The cost is $45 which includes valet parking, admission, program, lunch and the activity fee. The turf club has a dress code.

Joe Schneider and Joe Boucher spoke promoting the April 18 Rally School and the April 25 Zone 8 Rally. The two Joes were re-cently awarded overall first place in Class A for the Zone 8 Rally Series (see Page 32). Sign up for the rally school and bring your

navigator, paper and pencil and a watch.

Oscar Briones thanked Steve Kaller for the record-setting Ronald Reagan Library event. He reminded every-one that volunteers are still needed for our two Autocross events: March 29 in Santa Barbara, contact person Mike Zois [email protected]; and the April 11 Camarillo Autocross,

As the New Year unfolded for our family of club members, 103 participants and 60 Porsches met on February 21 at the Costco parking lot in Westlake Village and left for

a short ride to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

Once we parked and gathered for a group picture, we were divided into seven smaller groups, each with an individual docent who took us through all the different sections of the library. This beautiful building and its contents chronicle the life and times of President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy Reagan. It includes the collection of gifts given to them by various heads of state, more than 55 million pages of personal and administrative documents, over 1.6 million photographs, 20,000 video tapes, 25,000 audio tapes, and 670,000 feet of film, all preserved at the library.

Our guided tour included viewing the Magna Carta, the historical document from 1215 which created guidance on the rule of law and human rights. There are four “originals” of the Magna Carta in museums around the world, but this particular document is the only one in a condition to travel for public viewing. Our group also had a tour of The Oval Office recreation. Plus, we had a specially prepared lunch under the wing of the Air Force One exhibit, the historic Boeing 707 that flew seven presidents from John Kennedy to George W. Bush.

Our members boarded Air Force One and saw firsthand one of the most prestigious and powerful symbols of our nation’s Chief Executive. Alongside the Boeing 707 was Marine Corps One, the helicopter that was used to transport the president to and from the White House. In addition, the Air Force fighter jets

assigned to the protection of Air Force One while in flight were also available for viewing.

What makes PCA special is the camaraderie among its members, and Santa Barbara Region is no exception. At the conclusion of the tour the 103 members enjoyed lunch served in the pavilion showcasing Air Force One – indeed, our members sat beneath the wings of the aircraft. As expected at all Santa Barbara events, there was lots of talk, laughter and excitement.

As a bonus to all of us, Garrick Newman, one of our very own members who joined us on the tour, was part of the Secret Service detail that protected the Reagans both during their White House years and later in Santa Barbara at the Reagans’ ranch. Garrick told personal stories about being with President Reagan and anecdotes from his life as a Secret Service agent.

“Reagan Library Tour” - Continued from Page 11

Photos by Dan Lindsay & Brian Rubino

Garrick related a story about the Reagans visiting Ireland, where local residents, John and Mary O’Farrell, named a pub in the president’s honor. President Reagan would say, “John Kennedy got an airport; Lyndon Johnson a space center; but I got a pub named after me.” Garrick then revealed that the O’Farrell pub next to our lunch area was the same pub shipped to the Reagan Library in June 2004. I found the talk Garrick gave us about the Reagans as the most interesting part of the whole library tour. Thank you to SBR member Garrick Newman for sharing these stories.

This was a spectacular day and made more special by being with over 100 friends Janet and I have made in our club. =

A score of SBR’s R.U.F. Committee members enjoyed a very rewarding day on February 19. The group

traveled to The Humane Society of Ventura County facilities in Ojai to provide moral, material and financial support to those serving the needs of a variety of pets that need loving care and attention.

The Humane Society of Ventura County has been in operation since 1932. It has many specialized programs offered free to all in Ventura County. It is located at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai, and is open for adoptions Monday through Saturday. It is a no-kill shelter, which means that before an animal is euthanized, stringent guidelines must be met. The Humane Society of Ventura County does not euthanize animals only to make room for other animals. Instead, shelter officials work hard to encourage spaying and neutering as an alternative to pet overpopulation. Low-cost spay and neuter operations are available at the shelter’s Spay and Neuter Clinic in Ojai.

The facility houses dozens of dogs, cats, and horses (more on the latter below) and prepares them for adoption. More than 300 volunteers assist the few salaried officials in the daily care and training of the pets. Our four-legged friends are taught to socialize with other animals as well as humans, and by the time they leave the shelter they are well prepared to be loving and obedient pets to families that

can return the favor. Most of the pets have a difficult past as many were abandoned or mistreated by their previous masters; others are newborns that are desperate for a caring home. Each resident of the shelter has a special history, but all have a common need: the love humans can provide.

Among those about to be released for adoption are two dozen horses that were rescued this past October from a brutal and deadly environment at a ranch in Lockwood Valley. These were the “lucky ones,” although they were nearly starved to death and could not walk comfortably because their hooves were never trimmed

or otherwise cared for. The authorities found many other horses lying dead on the grounds of the ranch, many having found their fate through starvation. Among the rescued were several pregnant mares and

one foal that was a couple of weeks old and yet just barely alive due to starvation. The sickening conditions appalled even the hardest individuals; the inhumanity was incomprehensible.

Today, the rescued horses are doing great, thanks to the work of the shelter. It seems that all have fully recovered and are thriving. Indeed, several of the mares are due to give birth this spring!

The R.U.F. group started the day by meeting in downtown Ventura and then proceeded to Ojai via CA Hwy 33. It arrived at the shelter at 10:30 and was greeted by Suzanne Soprano, the shelter’s volunteer coordinator. Our members did not arrive empty handed! Each member brought supplies (such as rugs, blankets, toys), food (bags and bags of dog and cat food), and several checks to provide financial support. When all was calculated, R.U.F. donated more than $1,000 worth of supplies and food and more than $350 in funds. A special “thank you” must be sent to Donn, Kathy, Glenn and Kristin Shipley for providing the pick-up truck that transported all of the merchandise.

Ms. Soprano escorted the group throughout the grounds. First stop was the feline residence. None of us could resist the temptation to cuddle, stroke, scratch and kiss the cats desperate for adoption. One of our members chose to adopt two cats on the spot! The group then visited the dog compound where more than 50 canines were being housed. Several shelter volunteers were taking turns training the dogs how to react with humans and other canines, how to adapt to the use of a leash, etc. Each dog came with a printed profile indicating

its abilities, gender and breed, likes and dislikes. It was difficult not to take all of them home.

The final stop on the tour was the horse corral where the aforementioned horses were being groomed. We were advised that one mare was due to give birth any day, and preparations were under way to provide around-the-clock attendant service.

We departed just before noon and headed to Suzanne’s Cuisine in downtown Ojai for the lunch break. The restaurant had specially prepared tables ready for us on the rear patio. The setting was beautiful and the menu delightful. Four of our group were late in arriving for lunch as they repeatedly passed the parking lot without seeing the entrance to the restaurant. After telephoning the front desk for directions, they retraced their drive, looked closely, found the entrance and joined the rest of the group. Suzanne Soprano, our host from the shelter, joined us for lunch as our guest.

This was truly a “feel good, do good” outing for our committee. If you would like to join us on our next outing, contact Nicolas Liakas at (818)706-6016 or [email protected] =

(Ed.’s Note: After the R.U.F. visit to the Ojai facility, other members made return trips to the shelter resulting in two more cat adoptions.)

Have you ever been cruising down the highway and happened to notice the driving position of

certain people in the car next to you? A few people drive with their seat set all the way back. Their arms are fully stretched out, having no bend at all in their elbows. Then some people are so close to the steering wheel that you could not slip a CD between the steering wheel and their chest. Well obviously, both of these positions are incorrect for a number of reasons. The first and foremost is safety. In both of these positions the driver does not have the leverage or the movement required in their arms to make emergency driving corrections. For a professional race car driver or people lucky enough to have their own dedicated race car, their seat and steering wheel is set to a specified position that never changes. They do this so that every time they get into their cars, the position is optimized to help them best perform their job – go fast! They can’t do that without the correct seating set-up.

So is there actually an ideal position for all drivers? Well, there is something very close to a perfect position that allows for comfort (which leads to less fatigue), leverage, bracing, and good control of the vehicle in all types of driving conditions. It was not until I attended my first driving school that I actually learned about the correct seating position. If you attend a

professional sports car race, you will see almost every driver using this same set-up.

Let’s look at how to adjust the seat and steering wheel to provide you with the proper set-up for both street and track driving conditions. We will start with the seating position since that is our first contact with the car and every other adjustment is predicated on the correct seat set-up. Adjust the seat to the lowest position that still allows you a good view of the road ahead. This not only helps to lower the car’s center of gravity for better cornering and p e r f o r m a n c e , but it also places the driver’s body closer to the vehicle’s yaw, pitch and roll axis. This gives the driver a better feel for what the car is doing during any changes in speed or direction. Your derrière should be tucked firmly into the seat back, so that you can get feedback from the chassis, through the seat, up your spine and finally reaching the brain (where you can determine what the car is doing). You will get a better feel as to what the rear end of the car is doing if your body is firmly anchored to the seat.

Position the seat forward enough so your knee still has some bend in it with the clutch pedal being fully depressed. You do not want to be able to fully extend your leg or have to stretch while depressing the clutch. That will not provide you with adequate leverage while engaging the clutch or brake pedals. Also, you do

not want the steering column interfering with the movement of your legs while you are operating the brake or clutch. Your right foot should be comfortably placed to allow you to pivot the foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal without lifting the heel off the floor. The left foot, when not operating the clutch, should be resting on the “dead pedal” (that’s what it is there for). This will provide you some additional bracing while cornering or during an emergency maneuver.

Now that we have your feet and legs positioned correctly, let’s take a look at the arm position. The correct distance from the steering wheel is easily adjusted with some simple techniques. The proper distance can be achieved with your shoulders resting against the back of the seat, and then stretching your arms out straight (with no break in the elbows) so that the wrists are resting on the very top of the steering wheel. The wrists should be able to break so that your hands are able to droop over the far side of the wheel. If your wrists do not break at the top of the wheel, then you will need to adjust the seat (or adjust the angle of the seat-back) forward or backward to achieve this position. If your steering wheel has adjustability for reach (in and out) and height (up and down), this will give you some additional help in fine tuning your optimal position. You will probably notice that the angle of your seat-back (when adjusted correctly) will be more upright than you are accustomed to. Being too close or too far away from the wheel will inhibit your ability to maneuver in tight corners; i.e. driving on mountain roads,

Bill McInerney 1925 – 2009Many of our old-time PCA’ers will remember Bill McInerney. Bill was a PCA member for many years, first in the Los Angeles Region (1968-1971) and then our Santa Barbara Region.

Bill and his little blue 356SC coupe participated in many Porsche Parades, West Coast Weekends and regional events. He competed often and successfully in concours, rally and track events.

Bill endeared himself to many with his friendly and outgoing nature. Later on he returned to his first love, motorcycles, and spent a lot of time bashing around Baja California on bikes and in dune buggies. At age 60 he took on the Baja 1000 off-road race and finished 2nd in the dune buggy class.

In addition to many friends, Bill leaves his lovely wife of almost 35 years, Marianne, his step-daughters from his first marriage, Kathie Schneider and Susanne Ledbetter, and their many children and grandchildren.

This year’s El Camino Real XXVI Rally will be dedicated to his memory.

Prepared by Joe Schneider

swerving to avoid an animal that might run into the street, or driving on a race track. An improper position may even require you to move your hands on the steering wheel while cornering, which is not only a terrible technique but can also be dangerous.

Your hand position on the steering wheel should be in the 9 and 3 o’clock positions with the thumbs in contact with the 9 and 3 o’clock spokes of the wheel. This will give you more direct feedback from the front suspension in case of over or under-steering conditions. Your right hand will also be in a better position for reaching the gear shift lever and allows for a more natural movement when grabbing for that next gear. Locating your hands this way allows for more steering input in tight corners, without your forearms crossing over each other. If you have front air bags, it is slightly safer in helping to prevent wrist or hand damage in case of an air bag deployment as well. Lastly, your elbows should be allowed to

rest comfortably by your side. Now for a final check of your position.

After you believe you have everything set correctly, see if you have between 90 and 130 degrees of bend in the elbows, with your hands in the 9 and 3 o’clock position. Then make sure all of the dials and dash lights on the instrument panel are clearly visible without the steering wheel impeding your view. All three mirrors should be set to provide you with adequate visibility in all directions. With these final checks completed, you have successfully achieved your correct position. If you are like most people, you will find that your original position was a little too far away from the pedals and the steering wheel. You were holding the wheel in the 10 and 2 positions and the seat-back was reclined too much. This new position will probably feel uncomfortable and strange to you at first. With a little practice and care in your seating set-up (whether you are driving your Porsche or another car), you can develop a better driving position that leads not only to

better car control, but also makes for safer driving as well. This will provide you with a quick set-up routine. You can carry this from one car to another and it only takes a minute to correctly set your position once you know what you are doing. =
