COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

With Safety Weekend behind us we now can look forward to the Sail Past on May 10th. I hope everyone passed their safety inspection. Having your sticker as proof of a successful inspection is mandatory for using the out stations. Many members volunteer their time and efforts to make this a fun

filled weekend. I would like to thank Rob Langford who organized the event. Niki Bancroft and Theresa Coridor had a successful day selling club regalia. Jayne Thompson and her crew did their annual stint as Olive Oyl giving everyone a chance to sell what they bought last year. Neal Tyldsley and his cohorts put on the Friday night festivities as well as the lunch on Saturday. Well done all!!! I was pleased to attend the Vancouver Area Interclub Commodores’ Dinner at the RVYC Jericho Clubhouse on the evening of April 19th. Twenty one commodores and their spouses from various clubs were invited to share ideas and concern common to us all. (Continued of page 2)

2 (Commodore, continued) It appears that the main areas of concern are moorage availability, attracting new members and keeping on top of government rules and regulations that come down the pipe on a regular basis. With regard to the monitoring of government activity in areas that concern us as boating organizations and as individuals, RVYC has a team of three lawyers that keep apprised of these activities. This team will pass on their findings to the B.C. Council of Yacht Clubs. Being members of the council, our representative will pass on any pertinent information to the board.

I took the opportunity to inquire as to whether there was anyone or any group involved in the repair and clean-up of the Point Atkinson Light Station. This historic site is visited by many tourists annually and will be especially visible during the 2010 games. At this time there does not seem to be much interest in taking this on as a project. I will be investigating further as the year goes on. Let us hope for warmer, dryer weather on May 10th. Orilea and I are looking forward to the day and its traditions.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MARCH BOARD MEETING

• Shore Captain Chris Nelson reported that About 20 people turned up for the Shore Work

party on Mar 29 (though not all day) and a number of interior and outside projects were completed or substantially completed. During the following two weeks the electrician installed/energized new service The Washer/dryer and freezers are again available for members use.

• Treasurer Gord Argue noted that the club’s cash projection through to September 30, 2008 has improved by approximately $32,000 due primarily to higher than expected new member growth and the sale of our chip barge.

• Maintenance Director Stan Shepherd reported that Chip barge is sold and has been taken away. Also, an Ekins maintenance trip was recently completed (lock on lock box had been cut and all locks and keys taken by trespasser).

• CHANGES IN RULES Changes to Rule 19 were passed at a recent Board Meeting.

Rule 19. (b) Winter tarps are restricted to the entry end of shelters or on the vessel. They are to be white, clear or blue in color. Winter tarps must be well secured, in good repair and, for security reasons, shall provide a view into the vessel from the dockside. Winter tarps are permitted between October 1’st and May 1’st and must be removed by May 1’st.

Rule 19. (d) Permanent shelter tarps, as opposed to temporary construction tarps or winter tarps, are permitted at the vessel entry end of shelters only and may be blue, white or clear with white or clear preferred. They shall be of neat appearance and kept reasonably clean. Permanent shelter tarps (and winter tarps in shelters) must leave air space top and bottom to relieve wind pressure. Written approval of the Board is required before installation of a permanent shelter tarps. Board approved shelter tarps may be kept up year around.

SAILPAST 2008

This year’s Sailpast will kick off with a casual Steak & Caesar dinner on Friday, May 9th at the clubhouse. A sign up sheet will be posted in the office. The formal program begins at 0930 Saturday morning (coffee and muffins available at 08:00) The Commodore and Flag Officers will walk up the docks at 09:15. The Sailpast, will be held in the harbour (the same as last year) and the first vessel should be saluting the Commodore anchored in off Waterfront Park at noon. This will ensure that all members and guests are back to the club for a 1500 Texas BBQ. The Bar will open at 1400. Please be sure to use the sign up sheets in the office for lunch so we know how much food to have ready! Full details of the Sailpast protocol are posted in the office. A formal invitation is in the mail. Please be sure to send in regrets to the Commodore as required if you are unable to attend – there is nothing worse than wasting energy and funds only because we are guessing on the numbers. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and having a good time welcoming the 2008 boating season! Grant Allen, Vice Commodore

BOTTLE BOXES -Comments regarding the bottle boxes

I’m disgusted at what members throw into the bottle boxes, especially knowing young children empty these boxes. These must be the same members that cannot read the signs on the oil containers and put oil filters in the new plastic container barrel. Or the member that would not collapse his cardboard box and threw it in the garbage, even when questioned. We urge members to use these disposal facilities correctly.

James Nelson, Facilities Manger

IN MEMORIAM. Viola Marlatt, wife of long time BYC member Bud Marlatt, passed away on April 16/08 Our condolences to Bud and the Marlatt family.

SAFETY WEEKEND – Despite being the coldest Safety weekend in memory, Safety Director Rob Langford reports that 192 BYC vessels were inspected on Safety Weekend. There was a great turnout for the Friday Night BBQ and Saturday’s BBQ Chicken lunch supplied and cooked by Dan Wiebe. Jayne Thompson reports that although there were no really big sales at Olive Oly’s, the total sales were $1144.20. It is amazing what BYC’ers will buy – not Colour TV’s with built in VHS players though. Vickie Langford did a superb job selling 50/50 tickets with sales totaling more than $1300 for the weekend. Niki Bancroft & Theresa Coridor used their superior sales skills to rack up over $2500 in Regalia items.

MESSAGE FROM STAFF CAPTAIN - Sailpast 2008 - Cleanup Over the last few months some members have received a call from me requesting they clean up their moorage berths. THANK YOU for the cooperation. Our docks are looking better. We still, however, have more to do. Please, whether I have called you or not, clean up all "clutter" around and in your berth. In particular any FUEL CONTAINERS or FLAMMABLE PRODUCTS whether they contain fuel/flammables or not. Please be sure that the area around your berth is accessible. Think about whether there is anything that would block or hamper the ability of an emergency response team to access your berth area if needed - this could be in a situation where visibility is restricted by darkness or smoke – heaven forbid, but it could happen. Safety aside, Sailpast is a time we have guests to our club and how it looks leaves an impression - hopefully a favorable one. So with these points in mind and out of respect for our Commodore - let's clean up! Thank you! Paul Coridor.

THE BOATS OF BYC

Lloyd Henry Shepherd, founded the Shepherd Boat Works in 1928, and in 1939 opened the plant at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. The company built wooden pleasure boats for many years, particularly

runabouts like the one below. Shepherd sold the company and went into retirement in 1958. Shepherd build boats as large as 50’. In 1966 Shepherd joined forces with Trojan Boat Company from the USA and Shepherd built Trojans for the Canadian Market. In 1969 Whittaker Corp, who owned Bertram & Columbia yachts took over Trojan and Shepherd. For more information go to www.shepherdboats.com

Among the many Classic yachts in BYC is the only Shepherd =- the Starquest ll owned by Neil Tyldsley.

The 36’ Starquest ll was built in 1965 with a double planked mahogany bottom & 5/8’” Carvel planked mahogany sides. She features teak decks. Originally powered with twin Chrysler 318’s she was repowered in 1981 with 305ci Crusaders. This gives her a top speed of 22 knots with a 15 knot cruise.

Starquest ll was originally purchased from the factory by a Howe Street Brokerage Firm – Starquest Investments for $50,000. Three years later a RVYC member purchased the vessel and did many upgrades including the repower and the addition of the upper helm. The 3rd owner, George McConnell. purchased the boat in 1986 and brought here to BYC. In 1989 she was resold and became the flag ship for the Burnaby Power Squadron for 16 years until Neil purchased her in 2005. She is now undergoing an extensive restoration.

malachi at Sea The Crandell family continue their cruise. T u e s d a y , A p r i l 0 8 , 2 0 0 8 - We departed La Paz at 10:30 Saturday morning, April 5th and motored for 24 hours straight due to lack of wind. We decided to make a quick stop in Cabo San Lucas to top off our fuel and grab a few extra groceries and our last ice cream for a while, a little over an hour later we were off. As soon as we rounded the cape, we had 15 knots of NW wind....perfect! We set sail and have been sailing ever since. We are sailing a great circle route to Hiva Oa, Marquesas and at our current speed of 7kn we would arrive in 14 days,

Saturday, April 12, 2008 -Our first week at sea. I must say that I would never have imagined that a week at sea could go by so quickly! We all feel that way. Our first three days out were fantastic traveling 164 miles each day, the last few have not been quite as successful but still over 100 miles each day. Today was glorious! Sunshine and 23 degrees in the cockpit, calm seas which are a nice change from the rolly ones of late, but unfortunately, calms seas are the result of light winds. We're flying our Gennaker right now and are having a really nice ride in 11 knots of wind. Anyway, we've put 1052 miles behind us, only 1798 more to go!

Tuesday, April 15,2008 - Hot Hot Hot! Mui Calliente! y Tres Chaud! Ok, well I guess it's not really that hot, but for me (a heat sensitive Canuck) it is. Its day 11 and we're currently at 10 degrees 8 minutes North and 125 degrees 44 minutes West, approximately 4-5 days from the equator and there's definitely a change in the climate. I checked the outside temperature at the end of my watch at 6am and it was 24 degrees and everything is starting to feel damp with all the humidity. No need for blankets or sweatshirts anymore, that's for sure. We have not caught a single fish thus far but we wake up most mornings to an array of seafood on deck. Today we scored 4 flying fish and 3 squid! Jay & Jenny decided that they should put one of the squid on the fish hook and lo and behold, just an hour later had a strike! but sadly it got away. The wind has been pretty good so far and we're traveling at an average of 6.5 knots. The sunsets and sunrises are the highlights as are the stars, we're starting to see different constellations now which is very cool, time to break out the nautical almanac. Perhaps today we'll take a moonsite with sextant and see if we can remember how to plot our position the celestial way.

Saturday, April 19,2008 - A day away! We are currently at 02 degrees 56 minutes North 129 degrees 13 minutes west and should be crossing the equator mid afternoon on Sunday. We've been out here for two weeks and it's been good so far, but quite monotonous so the anticipation of crossing the equator has everyone excited. We figure we'll be crossing over with our friends in sight, yesterday they were only 52 miles away, but they would have to be within 5 miles or so to actually see them. We had a great rainfall yesterday, enough so that we could all go on deck for a shower and to give the boat a good rinse. The salt was everywhere so it feels good to have it rinsed off. It was a very hot day, 30 degrees and we all welcomed the cool down from the rain. We also had dolphins swim with us, that's a first for this crossing. Right now it's quite calm and we're motoring and have been doing so for almost 24 hours, it's 4:30am and the moon is bright and the sky is mostly clear, can see the Southern Cross, very cool.

SAGAS OF SAMMY SEAGULL Remember that one gorgeous sunny weekend

at the end of February? It got some BYC’ers into the spring clean-up mode. One of them was Terry Bubb who was sufficiently motivated to move the very heavy furniture from Kasaki so he could replace the carpet and bring in the new stuff. It was a big event. Move the boat back, get helpers and wrestle the furniture out. Load it onto carts then start the long walk moving the cartloads up to the head of the dock where he put a “free” sign on the tables, tub chairs, hide-a-bed and loveseat. Whew, that was heavy work. So you can imagine what he thought when he saw the tables coming back down A-dock. You can especially imagine what Terry thought when he saw it was Gary Salmon with the tables. Why? Because Gary’s Touché is only a few feet from Terry’s slip. Then he noticed Dave Mehain hauling the tub chairs past Kasaki to his recently acquired Tolly moored even closer than Touché. Within minutes only the loveseat remained. Well Terry, it was a lot of work hauling all that furniture unnecessarily wasn’t it? And thinking of Kasaki, one March Saturday Past Commodore Jim Mercier walked A-dock to take a look at Kasaki which was formerly the Mercier’s C-Joy. Jim arrived to a fully enclosed shelter and a spray paint crew of 8 completely repainting Kasaki’s topsides. “Whew, and I thought she just needed a light waxing!” said the PC. Gord Kleaman wants the record set straight. After the February Trident Mr. Kleaman told Sammy that Sammy was only half right. Gord didn’t run out of fuel in Indian Arm. Only one tank went dry. Sammy defensively explained that the report is only as good as the source and that it was Gord’s friends making the

report. That’s when Gord said, “Friend? It wasn’t any friend. It was Rob Langford!” To hear the sad story could make a bird misty. “It was James’ fault. He didn’t make any. I couldn’t start work that way. I certainly wouldn’t have made it to lunch. Well, if there wasn’t any in the Crow’s Nest I still had enough time to get some if I hurried. I jumped into my car and raced through the auto mall and over the tracks, turned and sped further, jumped a stop sign, pulled a u-turn and then it happened. By the time the cop wrote the two traffic tickets the line was too long for me to wait. I was now late for the start of the work party so I headed back, albeit more slowly and empty handed. It would have been cheaper to have slept in and paid the work hours. All this because he didn’t make coffee. It was James’ fault”. Sad story. Sammy’s betting Kindred Spirit skipper Frank Plumptre brings a thermos next time. If you don’t think seniority is important just ask Dale Priebe. He was successful winning a shelter for Black Magic with only twenty-six months seniority. How much did he win by? Twenty minutes according to the timed-stamped application form. It might be The Bartletts first Vic-Maui run in Starlight Express as reported in last month’s Trident, but they are veterans of the race. Sammy recalls asking Al how he carried all that fuel to motor Angelique, their former sloop, all that way…and then getting the diesel soot off the transom before the photos. Rumour has it that they weren’t slow. Just that the crew wasn’t interested in finishing too soon due to the gourmet rations coming from Betty’s galley. It isn’t a record, but next month you’ll learn how quick a new recruit can be

noticed by Sammy.
