UniformsIt seems there is still a lot of confusion from the WTSDA

Masters, Instructors and Students regarding appropriateuniform for tournaments. We train the mentors and judges toaccept only appropriate uniforms in the rings but it seems thatwe are still overlooking this issue at the world championship. This is mainly due to the students coming from such fardistances and we do not want to disappoint or embarrassanyone due to lack of communication from their instructors.

We would appreciate your help in being sure that you havethe correct dobohk and belt when participating in thisprestigious event. We are an organization of brothers andsisters and anyone looking from the outside (and inside)should be able to tell that we are one family with one standard.

The 25th Anniversary of WTSDA was celebrated inGreece on November 17th, 2007. It was a great daycelebrating this anniversary of our big family. Over 300 turnedout, all feeling very excited for this special occasion.

Children and adult students together with their familyand friends enjoyed this celebration with a smalldemonstration, a video presentation of the WTSDA family(for those not so familiar with all that is going on globally inour association), refreshments and snacks, the cutting of both

the 25th WTSDA anniversary cake and the cutting of theGreek association 10th anniversary cake. Lots of music anddancing was the best way to celebrate such an important dayfor our association. It was also a very good way of getting toknow each other better and showing everyone outside our bigfamily how close and united we are and how much love we allshare for the WTSDA.

A food drive and anniversary celebration was setup forSun. Nov. 18th, held in the Iowa Community CenterGymnasium. I contacted the Northern IL Food Bank (NIFB)serving our local counties and got ideas and details aboutfood collection. Mindy got busy putting together flyers andcollection paperwork for all the schools. For our Villa Park(VP) kids, to avoid having mountains of accumulated cannedgoods and non-perishables take over our classroom duringthe month, we came up with the plan to provide each studentwith 5 “coupons”: Half sheets of paper explaining to potentialdonors our students’ intent to collect, official logos forWTSDA and NIFB, and a blank line for a coordinated date towhich the student could return and pickup the donation.

Next we collaborated with Mrs. Jansa on party ideas, games, gifts, etc. and enlisted the services of several of theEagle Black Belts. Prizes were purchased, pizza was procured, and cake was coordinated. A giant collection grocery bag wasconstructed, tote boards were erected, and candy bags &piñatas were filled. Before we knew it, the big day was here.

I don’t remember much once it began. I was the emceeand was really in shock! The gym was decorated with HappyBirthday balloons: red, white and blue streamers andglittering Happy Birthday signs. There was a huge mat in themiddle of the floor for games. In front of the stage were thetwo long prize tables loaded end to end with everything from

autographed posters of Kwan Chang Nim to a foam dart gun.We had different stations the children were sent to as theywere divided by age. Games on the mat, Coloring corner, KoolKrafts (where they made the coolest little karate guy/girlornament). All rotated to a different section after 15-20 min.We had music playing in the background and the largestlimbo contest I ever witnessed! Laughter could be heardeverywhere as contestants were trying their best to walkforward while being bent completely backward. Gamewinners collected their prizes and about halfway through, theBirthday cake made it’s entrance and while everyone mustardup their best rendition of the Birthday Song, I made theofficial cutting (with the help of Master Jansa’s official B-daycake cutting sword). During the food break, while everyoneenjoyed pizza and soda we brought out the big projectorscreen. The kids and parents sat mesmerized as Kwan ChangNim and others told the history of the WTSDA. After themovie, cake was provided while the donation winners wereannounced and escorted up to the “donation” prize table. Aresounding applause came from the crowd when 10 yr old,Zachary Janis (VP TSD) took 1st place by collecting astaggering 240 items.

At last it was time to depart, “Good-bye” and “Thank youfor a great party” were heralded from the group of 200+parents, students and spectators and seemed to hang in the airfor half an hour after. Thanks to all of the participants andassistants, The WSDA 25th Birthday Party and Food Drive was ahuge success. The day following our event, the NIFB receivedquite a donation: 2,646 lbs of food. There are too many peopleto thank individually, but you know who you are. You’re thesame family and friends who are always there to selflessly lenda hand anytime it’s asked. Mindy and I extend our deepestappreciation and gratitude to you all.

On November 13 & 14, 2007 the anniversary of the WorldTang Soo Do Association was widely celebrated in Russia bythe students of the Tang Soo Do Russian Academy. Thecelebration took place in one of the best Russian AcademyTang Soo Do dojangs in Slavyansk-na-kubani. The gym wasdecorated with different ornaments, from multi-coloredballoons to posters and garlands. Thanks to this your moodrose and your heart wanted to sing.

The celebration was opened with a speech from theregion director A.M. Katyushin, in which he greeted andcongratulated all. Later the presentation on the theme “Fromthe history of Tang Soo Do” was shown, which was made byRussian students.

Following, there was a good entertainment program forstudents and guests. Besides spreading around the gympleasant music and showing films about Tang Soo Do on thebig screen there were many different contests. The variety ofthe contests taking place amazed a lot of people. There were

speaking, endurance, speed and skill contests to name a few. Most remarkable were the contests in which students showedhow much they knew the Korean language, philosophy andhistory of Tang Soo Do. Additionally, there were contests inbreaking and putting out a burning candle in one blowwithout touching the flame. In all, the contests showed a greatdeal of skill and erudition from the Russian students.

A celebratory dinner, with many different foods, tookplace in the evening. The tastiest food had to have been thebig cake with the beautiful inscription “25 years of WorldTang Soo Do Association.”

At the end of the celebration the results of the programwere summed up and winners were awarded prizes, whichcame from the World Tang Soo Do Association. It should beadded that as a whole, all that were present got a goodimpression and good memories that will live in their heartsfor a long time.

A few months ago I started Tang Soo Do. In the shorttime I have been there I have learned so much, and lookforward to coming to class. It teaches me to respect othersand to be disciplined. It is a great physical workout, and it alsoteaches me how to defend myself if the need should arise.

I was very happy to attend the twenty-fifth anniversarycelebration of the World Tang Soo Do Association. I was veryexcited and thrilled as I was also taking part in one of thedemonstrations. It made me feel very special that I wasincluded.

Another aspect was that family members were invited tothe celebration, which was super, because our families could

see what we are being taught.I like attending class here the atmosphere is always

friendly. There are no failures, if you do not reach your goalit teaches you to work harder, and to strive to achieve whatyou wish for. Not only here but in all aspects of your life. When you reach a goal it is a great boost to your spirit andyour self-esteem.

My family is very impressed with Tang Soo Do and afterevery lesson I give them a show of what I have learned. I can’twait for my brother to get a little bigger so that we can traintogether. Thank you for accepting me to learn and to betaught here.

On this past November 6th, I had the distinctpriviledge and responsibility of planning my dojang’s 2510anniversary party. What do I mean by 2510 anniversary? In themonth of November our association had the opportunity tocelebrate the 25th Anniversary of the World Tang Soo DoAssociation’s creation. As well, this month in this year was alsothe 10th year that my instructor, Master Carmen Mennilli hadbeen teaching in South Jersey. The task of organizing such anight would not be easy, but it was my task, and I had a funand extremely challenging time handling it.

Now, I have to thank all of the people who helped mewith such an endeavor, and I must express the fact thatwithout their guidance and help I would not have been ableto make such a fun party that we had. A lot of planning inadvance, fundraising, and maneuvering through paperworkand organizing was hard, but also being committed to my lifeas a Cho Dan, and a seventeen year old, I had to keep up theTang Soo Do spirit and repeat, “never give up”.

The night began at six o-clock and would last untileight-thirty but my day began at ten AM, and this party was inthe wokrs since July. We used part of our dojang, Riverwinds

Community Center in West Deptford, New Jersey, and set uptwo TV’s to show tournament videos, created nametags forpaid tickets, blow up ballons, set up dessert tables, set seatingarrangement, and began a tremendous night.

Our party was a blast of games, prizes, pizza, goodmusi, dancing, cake and ice cream, and other festivities tocelebrate such a marvelous occasions as the 25th year of theWorld Tang Soo Do Association in action, as well as thelearning opportunites we’ve had from our Master being inSouth Jersey. Also, for the adults we had a drawing for a fifty-fifty raffle where $138.50 would go to St. Lucy’s center for thevisually imparied.

We had a large assortment of partying, and I wassurprised I had doubts that our party would be anything butgreat. After all the stress, all the mess, and all the worrying, organizing, pain, tears, and determination, we had asuccessful party, and can’t wait until our next one comesaround. Happy Anniversary TWDSA and Master Mennilli, and TANG SOO!

Elmhurst Tang Soo Do of Elmhurst, Illinois celebratedthe 25th anniversary of the founding of the World Tang SooDo Association in true Tang Soo family style. A burthday partywas held on Saturday, November 10th for our Tang Soo Dopractitioners and their families. Fifty participants watched theanniversary video, played games such as “Tanks and Generals”and “Sumo”, and joined in much food and fun. Several of theDans and asult Gups also enjoyed watching various video clipsof many of the Masters from decades ago.

As a part of our celebration, we joined together inbringing gently used books and crayons to be donated to a

local charity which benefits underprivelidged children andchildren with disabilities, and the 184 books collected will bedistributed out to children whose families cannot afford topurchase books for them to use to build their literacy skills.

All in all, both the celebration and the efforts for charityonly highlighted the strength of the WTSDA thatGrandmaster, Masters and others have worked so hard tobuild over the past 25 years. May there be many, many more.Tang Soo!

My fellow Tang Soo Domembers. It is such apleasure to see all of youhere today. It has been

eight years since our first meeting atthe 1974 Burlington convention. Westill remember that exciting meetingand all recall how much we expected tobe a part of the future organization.Today we are gathered here again forthe same reason and the same purpose. An oriental proverb says, “True risecomes after seven falls.”Coincidentally, this is our eighth yearsince our last union.

On behalf of all of you, I wouldlike to declare the new birth of theWORLD TANG SOO DOASSOCIATION!

At this historic moment, I am veryproud of all of you and feel veryresponsible to you. I see you all as elitetroops. My own personal belief is thatsuch elite individuals cannot beproduced but are discovered. Let usstand up and build the neworganization for our combinedinterests and with our own hands. Weare gathered here together as a jointgroup of revolutionaries for a newmartial art future and as a joint projectof perpetual progress in the world ofmartial arts.

Also, I would like to explain clearlywhat we are going to strive to achieve.

The following speech was given by Grand Master Jae Chul Shin at the World Tang Soo Do Charter Convention on November 13, 1982.

First, we will preserve thetraditionalism of martial arts.Although we do not deny progressivereformation or martial arts as a sport,we will adhere to the Arts and theoriginal principles.

Secondly, we will introduce ourprestigious art known as Tang Soo Doto the world in order to share itsbenefits. We are sure this will be a greatcontribution to the human welfare ofthe world both physically andspiritually.

Next, our organization willundertake and improve our members’high level of professionalism for thewelfare and benefit of all members. Wewill share our time to study anddevelop both physically and spirituallyin order to remain as the mostrespected organization and to fit theworld’s demands.

Lastly and most importantly, wewill maintain and improve our strongfeeling of brotherhood among ourmembers.

Fellow members, let us celebrateour progress from the United StatesTang Soo Do Federation to the WorldTang Soo Do Association. This neworganization will rule and control theaffairs of martial arts of the world. TheUnited States of America, Europe, theMiddle East, South American and Asiaare with us already. We will move to

Canada and Africa soon.Remember fellow members, the

respected masters created a fineorganization and system three or fourdecades ago. Let us realize that samedream today. Let us make thisorganization the most genuine andrespected one now and for generationsto come. Let us work hard and withself-sacrifice in order to reach our goalsand obtain glory. Let us improveourselves day by day while we keep trueto our traditions and build a spirit ofstrong brotherhood as a Family of TangSoo Do.

I would like to thank my manydedicated friends who participatedpersonally under such difficultconditions to make this a successfuland beautiful convention. The namesare too many to mention individuallybut I must mention the warm feeling Ihave for you all. I also would like tothank the convention preparationcommittee whose dedication and self-sacrifice made this great gathering asuccess. My wish to all here is that thisunforgettable and most valuable timethat we have spent together will beremembers as I shall remember it –with deep emotion and a feeling ofbrotherly love.

I thank you all. God bless you.Long live the World Tang Soo DoAssociation !

We were privileged to hostthe 10th World Ki Gongclinic in the Netherlands.

The organization was in thecapable hands of Richard Suijker andthe NTSDA. It was held on February 23& 24, 2008 in Bergschenhoek.

Master Tim Schroeder, a blue shirtlevel 5 Ki Gong instructor of the WorldKi Gong club, came over from TahoeCity California, USA (a 15 hour, 7000mile travel) to share his knowledgewith us. There were 32 participantspresent to welcome Master Schroeder.Master Schroeder announced thatRichard Suijker was appointed toEuropean Ki Gong administrator onrequest of Grandmaster Shin.

After a short general introductionon the program we started with a warmup, and did hand and foot massages. We practiced breathing techniques andlearned about meridians and theirconnection with our internal organs. We learned about Ki, the force of life, our internal life force and how itconnects everything. Howconcentration strengthens this forceand how we can have influence on it.We learned about the different kinds ofbreathing. We practiced awareness ofmovement. This we did outside in the

park in sets of 2 persons. We practiced different kinds of

meditation and have felt the effect onour body. The five Phase Theory andpractice was intense and veryinteresting. With this, the five elementsand the effect on the body wereexplained. Also, we used our Ki energyto massage each other and MasterSchroeder showed us the possibilitiesof Ki healing, cupping, pendulum andacupressure techniques.

We tried the small circle Universemeditation and felt the effect on thebody…it is very intense.

Ki Gong is open for WTSDAmembers and their family members. Itis enrichment for martial artists, but it

10TH EUROPEAN KI GONG CLINICis not necessary to be a martial artist. The most important thing is to havefun in what you do. It was two veryinteresting days with different parts ofmovement, massage, breathing, techniques, theory, meditation, Hyungsand fun. The participants were veryenthusiastic about Ki Gong. Theweekend was a great success andhopefully calls for a continuation nextyear.

Deer met us when we drove in.There was a fireplace in ourroom. I had breakfast withGrandmaster Shin. Do I have

your attention? From the introduction to our

closing lunch we moved through athoughtfully planned out weekend ofmeditation, Ki Gong exercises, andpresentations from doctors, acupuncturists, healers and masters.Grandmaster Shin, Master Schroeder, and Mrs. Rupp created a weekend oflearning that was full of ease andpossibility. We moved right into handand foot massages and Ki Cho Ki Gongright after orientation. Our Ki(energy) was present to all of us, eventhe first timers (which I was) before weheaded to dinner. There was no doubtwhat this weekend was all about!

For those of you who are new to KiGong, let me give you some quickdetails. Ki means life energy, Gongmeans study and practice. There arethree vital elements to ones Ki Gongpractice: 1) breathing, 2) posture, and3) mind. Through these threeelements you learn how to commandyour mind, train your body and how toreally breathe. A lot of this may soundfamiliar to you, and that’s great. But letme tell you something, the breathing isa whole new world. At your first clinic, which I highly recommend, you will

learn how to do healing breathing. It iscounter intuitive, requires muchconcentration, and I found to beunbelievably powerful.

Now that you have a rough sketchof Ki Gong, let’s get back to thisincredible weekend in Asilomar,California. After dinner, during whichI don’t think I stopped smiling (a sideeffect of Ki Gong), Mr. Roberstonintroduced us to Chinese Energy Ballsand Mrs. Mars gave a presentation onwomen’s health issues. There was a lotof clanging from the Energy Balls, all ofwhich was met with laughter andsupport by the group. Mrs. Mars talkedabout Ki and it’s role in hot flashes andnight sweats. She addressed ways torelieve and redirect the energy duringthe experience, as well as ways toprepare and support your body and Kito avoid or lessen the intensity of thesetypes of experience. It was reallyinteresting to hear how energy plays amain role here, where westereotypically are told it’s allhormonal.

We closed our first evening with ameditation for brain waveconsciousness, after which, I headedback to my room, very wide-awake. Ittook the routine of ending the day andchatting with my roommate to settleinto a space suitable for sleep.

Saturday we began with an hour of

9TH KI GONG CLINIC - BECOMING ONE WITH THE UNIVERSEKi Gong followed by an hour of walkingmeditation on the beach and breakfast.I wish I could wake up this way everymorning. There is so much energy innature; you can feel it in the calm of asunrise or the gust of a storm.

Acupuncturist Dr. Stern discussedKi Gong concepts and cupping theoryin the morning, between which wewent outside and did blood circulationexercises, and before lunch more Kidevelopment.

In the afternoon we did walking KiGong and Healing Intuition withpartners. The partner work was a newdevelopment. We spent time listening, not with our ears, but with our Ki, tosomeone else’s Ki. We were listeningwith our energy fields, picking upchanges, different sensations. It wasintriguing to have my partner usesomething other than everyday languageto assess that I have a back injury andpoor circulation in my feet. But she did,and I certainly hadn’t told her!

Saturday evening for the level I andII Ki Gong Members was spent withGrand Master Shin as he introduced usto Spring Forrest Ki Gong and OhHang Gong Theory and Practice (FiveElement). Grand Master patiently, andhumorously at times, walked us throughthe five elements, their organs and theirhand positions. Masters Schroeder and

continued from page 10Master Inoshita worked with level IIIand above Ki Gong Club members onMethods of Healing and Acupressure.

Throughout the weekend Mrs.Rupp gave all who were interested anIon Cleanse footbath. I had mine atthe end of the evening and let me tellyou, my feet were happy! I slept like ababy, Ion Cleanse and Ki Gong-ed out!

Sunday morning I recalled GrandMaster Shin sharing with us, from theday before, the intent or purpose of KiGong. First he asked us what the intentof a black belt was, to which weresponded, “to become one withnature, sir!” Then he informed us thatthe purpose of Ki Gong is to becomeOne with the Universe. With that onmy mind, I walked down to the beachwith the group for our morningmeditation walk. Master Schroeder

asked us to be present to the energy ofthe ocean, and I, having a long-standing relationship with the ocean, was all in!

I spent about 20 minutes simplystanding in the sand and then I movedout onto a rock which, when the waveswere big enough, was surrounded bywater. There I spent the rest of mymeditation, moving with the ocean, thesea spray…the energy of the universe.

Master Schroeder taught us a newform after lunch, Tae Kuk Ki Gong, which I hope to have a copy of soon!We reviewed the weekends work, packed up and headed to lunch forclosing words and graduation.

The weekend was amazing. Notsimply because of the topic, but alsobecause of the people. I’m a kid atheart, and in all actuality I play one inreal life. But when it comes to energy,

Ki, I can hold down a grown upconversation. What I found at the 9thKi Gong Clinic was a community ofpowerful, committed healers andmartial artists who are up to big thingsin this world. All of them welcomedme, a Cho Dan, first time Ki Gongpractitioner and novice studio owner tothe group. Each of them listenedintently, compassionately, and patientlyto my questions.

Ki, we all have it and, yes, you dotoo. There are so many things in thisworld that we put off, don’t put your Kioff. Talk to your instructor. Do whatyou have to do in order for you tobegin your relationship with your Ki.Your life depends on it.
