Growing Old Graciously

Being an EncouragerBy Dr. Jim Kok, Director of Care Ministries

“May We Feel YourPresence…”By Robert H. Schuller, Founding Pastor

As our congregation prepares for a Holy Landtour this fall, I recall a trip that Arvella and I tookto our Savior’s earthly homeland a few years back.On the tenth anniversary of our church in 1965,our loving congregationpresented Mrs. Schullerand me with a trip tothe Holy Land - my sec-ond and Mrs. Schuller’sfirst. We became excitedas we imagined that, together, we would bewalking where Jesuswalked.

As we began to packand plan for this holypilgrimage, we added adaily prayer: “May we feel Your Presence in a spe-cial touch from You, O Lord, as we walk whereYou have walked.”

Several weeks later, we were climbing the Via

The number one step for gracious living atany age, but especially in the “last half” is to assessaccurately how much you have that everybodyelse needs. To successfully take this inventory

requires a setting aside ofanything that might beinappropriate modesty. This is the kind of mod-esty that belittles yourselfwith almost pious sound-ing self-discounts. It maybe a lifelong bad habit longoverdue to be set aside. Ifyou are one who chronical-ly belittles yourself or you

claim quietly to be of little value to the humanrace, it is time to stop because it is not true.

You have something every living humanbeing needs. Now in the half of your life whenother pressures and responsibilities are changingand even dropping away, a new opportunity isopen for you. It is to be an encourager of theyounger generation and your peers, as well. Whata great new title to own: “I am an encourager.”

Inside of you are piles and pounds of unspo-

There is no human being who cannot usewhat you are carrying around. That is why youmust abandon any tendency to think of yourselfas of little value in this world. Everyone you meetneeds what you have! A few days ago, I was visit-

The scholarship hasprovided private instruction all these years in the

However, Daniel’s numberone gift is his heart to serve theLord. He has shown himself to besteadfast in his faith and Christianwalk. HOUSE OF POWER

Our “House of Power” CommunityBy Dr. Beverely Muffin

What is “community”? It is the comingtogether of two or three or more, in the case ofbelievers, where Jesus comes also, to share ourwalk and journey of faith. How, then, would onecount the coffee breaks, lunches, dinners, gather-ings, and times of one or two or more coming

together, over a fence, on astreet or in the market place,

sharing lives, embracinghearts, and reflectingGod’s love as mirrors, oneto the other?

If you would like aplace to enter “communi-ty” through the Crystal

Cathedral, then I encourage you to become aHouse of Power. We have many gathered and scat-tered all over our community, the nation, and theworld. All you have to do to become a House ofPower is to commit your life to being one filled

with faith, hope, and love, and you’re in! For more information, call 714-971-4088 or

send an e-mail to [email protected].

COMMUNITY MISSIONS

The ESL Mission is our Church’s Mission

Our ESL Center reflects the CrystalCathedral’s mission statement: “The ministry is acenter and community for spiritual growth, wherepositive attitudes are developed, were good peoplebecome better, where hurts are healed, where les-sons are learned, where friendships are devel-oped…”

In our English as a Second Language (ESL)classes, good people become better and lessons arelearned. As students learn English, positive atti-tudes do grow, indeed, as they gain hope for theirfuture success. Moreover, as we get to know eachother and share our lives together, hurts arehealed, and wonderful friendships flower andblossom.

Please help us in this mission to our commu-nity - become a tutor, or refer to us anyone youknow who desires to learn English. For moreinformation, please call Gudelia Ramirez at 714-971-4047.

CARE CONFERENCE

Care and Kindness Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The hundreds of people attending the tenthannual Care and Kindness Conference in Marchwere ignited, equipped, and inspired to shinebrightly as “The Light of the World.” To God bethe glory for the conference’s success! The CareMinistry is receiving wonderful reports of blessingfrom those who attended. Many say it was thevery best.

Each person was prayed for by a dozen CrystalCathedral “prayer warriors” before they evenstepped foot onto our grounds. The spirit of car-ing was felt by attendees and was deeply appreci-ated. Now, equipped by what they learned at theconference and empowered by prayer, they aretaking that caring spirit out into their own com-munities to watch it spread like a kindly wildfire!

NEW HOPE

Our Struggle With PrayerBy William Gaultiere, Ph.D., Director of New Hope

You and I need prayermore than we need the airwe breathe and the foodwe eat. Truly. We live byprayer and we always will– even in heaven. Prayer isthe most intimate lan-guage in existence – itconnects us with God’slove and with one anoth-er. It’s no wonder that70% of Americans prayevery day! And right hereat the Crystal Cathedral –“a praying congregation”as our Pastor Robert A.Schuller likes to remind us– over 100 people everyday reach out for prayerfrom a New HopeCounselor.

If one offers to prayfor a person, rarely willthat person decline theoffer. Yet, many peoplefeel uncomfortable and

awkward, actually, to pray aloud, on the spot, foranother person. Moreover, even when it comes toprivate prayer many of us struggle with a wander-ing mind or feel that our prayers bounce off theceiling.

We all need help to grow in our prayer life, and God has provided that help in the Bible. Forthousands of years God’s people have turned toPsalms and other passages of Scripture to guidetheir prayers. Jesus, Himself, prayed this way.

Join me as we let out our sails to catch thepowerful wind of the Spirit and use some belovedtexts of Scripture like a rudder to steer our boatstoward Christ. I’ll help you take hold of the rud-der in your hand so you can sail in prayer for yourself and others as we fix our eyes on Jesus and praythe Scriptures for one another.

What’s it like to be a New HopeCounselor?

During a free “show and tell tour” on Floor 3of the Tower of Hope on Tuesday, May 1 at 6:15PM, you’ll see the New Hope operations up closeand learn essential communication skills foreveryday relationships. PRESCHOOL

“Share Your Gift” Program InitiatedBy Marlene Kikta, Preschool Director

One of the goals of the Crystal CathedralPreschool is to teach children that God hasgiven each of us special gifts. Another goal is toteach our children that God wants us to share. As a result, we have started a “Share Your Gift”

program, inviting adults to come and sharetheir gifts from God with our children.

Our program got off to a great start withthe Crystal Cathedral’s own Will Jenkins (whocurrently works in the Bookstore’s warehouse),who shared his gift of music and song. WillJenkins explained to the children that musicalability was his gift from God and that he washappy to share it, especially with them. In addi-tion to singing and playing the guitar, hetaught the children a new song! It was adelightful experience for the children and, whoknows - “Mr. Will” may have just inspired afuture guitar player!

The Crystal Cathedral Preschool is nowenrolling children for the new school year thatstarts in September. Contact the office at 714-

971-4141 to register your child in our OrangeCounty “5 star-rated program!” The office staffwould be happy to give you a tour.

ACADEMY & HIGH SCHOOL

Blessing Students Through Arts,Education & EncouragementBy Dr. Sheila Coleman, Director of Family Ministries

In 1977, Arvella Schuller started a newschool model: a private Christian school withexcellent academics with the arts and Bible aspart of the core curriculum for every student. Inthe nearly 30 years since, the Crystal CathedralAcademy expanded to include an exceptionalmiddle school and outstanding high school.

PARENTS

FACING THE UNKNOWN WITH FAITH!Dear Sheila,

My daughter’s husband recently received a promotion thatwill move them out of state. I’m just heartsick. I’m a widow andthey are my only family. I cannot begin to tell you how much Iwill miss them. Should I ask themto turn down the promotion?-Afraid of Being Left Behind

Dear Afraid,Nothing is as scary as is

the unknown. You believe that you will beall alone if they leave you. The reality is that being alone is alwaysa choice. You can choose to continue to use your daughter andher family as your sole source of companionship or you can reachout to find other people and ways to fellowship.

This circumstance reminds me of an Easter egg hunt at myparents’ house. As the grandchildren ran through the house look-ing for chocolate eggs, my son Christopher (then two years old)walked up with one of my mother’s prized, antique china teapotsdangling from his arm. “Stuck,” he said. Apparently,Christopher had spotted a chocolate egg in the teapot and washolding on to it with a firm, fat little fist.

“Let go of the egg, Christopher,” said Dad, but my sonwould not let go. Eventually, Dad held out a bigger egg and, asChristopher reached for it, the teapot dropped into Dad’s hands.

I believe that God may have a bigger dream for you that youcan achieve only if you are willing, first, to let go. I think that ifallow your daughter the freedom to make her own choice, withyour blessing, you will receive a new lease on life. You will dis-cover that there are many ways to find new friends (like volun-teering or a Bible study), while keeping in touch with and visit-ing your daughter and family often.-In Christ’s love, Sheila

Many of us find our pri-mary identity through ouroccupation. Therefore, retire-ment for some creates a dilem-ma. “Who am I now?” If theanswer has always been con-

nected to how you earned money or your role as amother or father, you may feel you are nobody now.

“You are the light of the world,” says Jesus. Thatis an identity that needs never to be extinguished.Retirement years free us for a more deliberate andintentional career in brightening our environment.

Growing old graciously is to recognize in all theyounger folks (and everybody else) around you theneed for appreciation, admiration, and encourage-ment. Be a Part of Crystal Cathedral’s2007 Easter Lily Garden!

The lilies you provide with a gift of $10 eachin honor of memory of your loved one(s), will fillthe Cathedral with the beauty of these majestictrumpet-shaped white flowers, symbolizing puri-ty, virtue, innocence, hope, and life - the spiritualessence of Easter.

History, mythology, literature, poetry, and theworld of art are rife with stories and images thatspeak of the beauty and majesty of the elegantwhite flowers. The lily is mentioned numeroustimes in the Bible. One of the most famous

Biblical references is in theSermon on the Mount, whenChrist told his listeners:“Consider the lilies of thefield, how they grow: they toilnot, neither do they spin; andyet…Solomon in all his glorywas not arrayed like one ofthese.”

Often called the “white-robed apostles of hope,” lilieswere found growing in theGarden of Gethsemane afterChrist’s agony. Tradition has itthat the beautiful white liliessprung up where drops of Christ’s sweat fell to theground in his final hours of sorrow and deep dis-tress. The Crystal Cathedral and churches aroundthe world continue this tradition at Easter time bybanking their alters and surrounding their crosseswith masses of Easter Lilies to commemorate theresurrection of Jesus Christ and hope of life ever-lasting.

To submit your donation, go to the BoxOffice on the Plaza or call 714-544-5679 beforeApril 10. Both your name and the name of yourhonoree(s) will appear on the Crystal Cathedral

Web site following the Easter celebration.

Dolorosa (the Way of the Cross), praying ourown quiet prayer to Jesus, our crucified Lord. However, suddenly, Mrs. Schuller became veryill and was taken to a hospital. She tells it in herown words:

“I was a very disappointed pilgrim. God sure-ly wasn’t answering my prayer. It was a painful, hot, and sleepless night with the continual groansof pain and distress drifting through my openwindow from the floor below. Daylight finallycame. It was Sunday morning and my birthday. Ifought back the tears. Today I would be missingBethlehem, Gethsemane, and the Communionservice at the Garden Tomb, the mountain topexperience in my Holy Land pilgrimage.

“Then a Christian Arab doctor stopped atmy bed, accompanied by a nurse and interpreter.I was told that I was in a Lutheran MissionHospital that was serving thousands of displacedArab refugees. I looked at this Christian doctorand his eyes became the kind eyes of my Lord. The healing touch of the nurse became that ofJesus. I knew then that my prayer had beenanswered. I had met my Lord and felt HisPresence surround me totally and completely!”

As we celebrate our Risen Lord, please praywith Arvella and me: O Lord, how we thank Youthat You are not limited to a particular place onearth, but that through Your Holy Spirit living inYour followers around the world, You continueYour ministry of teaching, healing, and loving.Amen.

Where Your FaithComes Alive!9:30 & 11 AM in the Freed Theater,Welcoming Center, Lower Level

The new C3 (Crystal CathedralContemporary) is an alternativeworship style that appeals to theneeds of young parents interestedin a Sunday service that is more contemporary than our CrystalCathedral Classic, but less edgy than “The Gathering.”

A live worship band and a young host pastor will lead the service for thefirst half hour, then see and hear, simultaneously with those in the CrystalCathedral, a live feed of the morning message. A “cry room” area with TVscreen located in PJ’s Heavenly Café is where you can retreat, yet not missthe message. Following the service will be a special time of fellowship whereyou can grab a cup of coffee and connect with friends - old and new.

If this sounds like the service that best suits you, now is the time to getin on the very beginnings of an exciting new Sunday morning experience atthe Crystal Cathedral!

Igniting, Connecting & Transforming Kids!9:30 & 11 AM in the Family Life Center

Entering through the doors of the Family Life Center, the everyday world disappears and KidPower Plant comes alive! Children are

drawn into a world filled with interactivemagnetic and hologram walls, crackle

tubes with neon lightning, and the soundsof gears and industrial music.

Plasma screens direct the children totheir assigned “Live Wire” team leaders, who make them feel welcome and generate a

sense of belonging. In small groups, the children are encouraged to choosefrom a selection of activities that are thematic and engaging.

Then the sound of industrial music signals the children to assemble intothe large group time called “Fusion.” Energizing music starts the count-down – “…5, 4, 3, 2, 1…Blastoff!” – led by “High Voltage,” the MiddleSchool hip-hop worship team. The children sing songs that teach aboutpossibilities, plugging into the power of God, and believing in their God-given dreams.

Bible stories – the core of the program – are told with humor by KidPower Plant Manager Stanley Sprocket, along with Candi Current, BobbyD. Battery, and others in “The Geared Up Gang.” During this time, thechildren learn the most important lessons in life - that God loves them andhas unique dreams for each of them!

We invite children of all ages to see what’s happening behind the doorsat Kid Power Plant!
