You Need to Know Why Young People Leave the Church By Nicholas Davis Bobby Conway (The One Minute Apologist) inter- viewed J. Before we do or change anything, we have to at least acknowledge that our young people are being chal- lenged when they attend college. This should help us realize that we need to be- gin to address the inevitable concerns they will be faced with before they go off to college campuses around the globe. The three most critical fac- tors involved in this flight from church are: 1. Young people are underprepared. They are not adequately equipped to make a case for what they believe and why they believe it. As a whole, we as the church have failed our youth. We have been too busy entertaining them when we really needed to better teach and prepare them. 2. Young people enter into a hostile campus environ- ment. A higher percentage of unbelievers are on faculty at college campuses; thus, students are exposed to a plethora of arguments that seek to undermine the faith of young Christians. A distrust of sacred texts exists in academics, and young people are taught to question everything they were raised to believe. 3. Young people, like all of us, struggle with pursuing desire. At college, young people are faced with the opportunity to embrace an alternative worldview that allows them to do whatever they want to do. They already are wrestling with their own inner desires to sin, and that, coupled with a hostile environment and being un- prepared to handle it, in- evitably leads to a signifi- cant number of church- raised young people falling away from their faith. So what exactly can we do to help young people stay in the church when they get to college? Although we can’t fight their inner desires for them, we can prepare them better. You Need to Know Why Young People Leave the Church

By Nicholas Davis

Bobby Conway (The One Minute Apologist) inter-viewed J. Warner Wallace (author of Cold-Case Chris-tianity) on the reason why so many young believers are leaving the church during and even after college.

Before we do or change anything, we have to at least acknowledge that our young people are being chal-lenged when they attend college. This should help us realize that we need to be-gin to address the inevitable concerns they will be faced with before they go off to college campuses around the globe.

The three most critical fac-tors involved in this flight from church are:

1. Young people are underprepared.

They are not adequately equipped to make a case for what they believe and why they believe it. As a whole, we as the church have failed our youth. We have been too busy entertaining them when we really needed to better teach and prepare them.

2. Young people enter into a hostile campus environ-ment.

At college, young people are faced with the opportunity to embrace an alternative worldview that allows them to do whatever they want to do . They a l r eady a r e wrestling with their own inner desires to sin, and that, coupled with a hostile environment and being un-prepared to handle it, in-evitably leads to a signifi-cant number of church-raised young people falling

away from their faith.

So what exactly can we do to help young people stay in the church when they get to college? Although we can’t fight their inner desires for them, we can prepare them better. Equipping young people with sound, rea-soned answers to the inevitable questions they will face as they go out into the world will give them a better chance to survive those tough college years.

Suggested Good Work Recycle what you can as a way to help care for God’s creation.

Control Your Tongue When your words will offend a weaker person: “And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?” (1Co 8.11).

The Wisdom of George Washington: On How We Treat Others “It is really a strange thing that there should not be room enough in the world for men to live, without cutting one anothers’ throats.”

The Wisdom of Augustine of Hippo: On Rightness and Wrongness “Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.”

God expects Christians to take risks By Randal Matheny

“God expects us as Christians to take risks while doing His work. I would suggest the same is true at the level of the local congregation. I’m talking about the risk of failure. How ambi-tious are we in the plans we have to do work for God? Do we trust that things will be okay even if we try hard and mess up? This, I think, is a part of faith that requires maturity—the faith that God will stick with us even if we don’t succeed by our standards.

Church History (Christian History Institute)

1899: The steamship Stella strikes some rocks in a fog while sailing to Guernsey. Mary Rogers, a cheerful, kind, and hard-working stewardess, supervises the escape of a large number of women and relinquishes her own lifebelt to the last of them, giving up her place in the lifeboat. Raising her hands to heaven she cries, “Lord, have me!” as the ship sinks beneath her.

1858: Dudley Tyng speaks to a noon rally of five thousand in Philadelphia, taking as his text, “Go now ye that are men and serve the Lord.” He de-clares that he would rather lose his right arm than fail to deliver God’s message to his listeners. Deeply moved, one thousand men respond to his solemn words. Two weeks later one of his arms is yanked from its

socket in an accident, infection will develop, and it will have to be ampu-tated. These measures will not save him and in a few days more he will die. His last words will be “Stand up for Jesus, father, and tell my brethren of the ministry to stand up for Jesus.” This dying exhortation will inspire the hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.”

The Thief on the Cross and Jesus by Fulton J. Sheen “A dying man asked a dying man for eternal life; a man without posses-sions asked a poor man for a king-dom…In the divine plan it was a thief who was the escort of the King of kings into paradise. If our Lord had come merely as a teacher, the thief would never have asked for forgive-ness. But since the thief’s request touched the reason of his coming to earth, namely, to save souls, the thief heard the immediate answer. ‘I prom-ise thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise’ (Luke 23:43). It was the thief’s last prayer, perhaps even his first. He knocked once, sought once, asked once, dared everything, and found everything. When even the disciples were doubting and only one was present at the cross, the thief owned and acknowledged him as Savior.
