SYNDICATE NEWS

Senior News - Beyond the usual literacy, mathematics and topic programmes, the senior classes have also shared some real highlights over the last 2 weeks. We are especially grateful to the specialist football coaches we have had over the last 10 weeks in Football, which sadly ended this week. These have been a lot of fun, and we have seen a huge growth in skills. In Physical Education lessons we continue to enjoy playing some of the new games we have been taught. At the beginning of this week we went to the Nairn Street Park for a Kiwi Sport Rugby League coaching session. Again, we experienced expert tuition, a lot of fun, and some new games to include in our Physical Education sessions back at school.Last week we all participated in a whole school walk through Highgate, to Ross Creek Reservoir and down to Woodhaugh Gardens via the Millennium Track. We lunched at Woodhaugh and returned to school climbing the Bullock Track, and then walking through Highgate again. The walk took most of the day and offered interesting variations in terrain and challenge. It was very enjoyable, and many children commented that they were very tired that night! It has been a very interesting and rewarding end to Term 1.

Middle NewsPeople can make a difference! Children in the middle syndicate have met a number of people who make a difference through their work. Children have met and learnt from the following people:EpilepsyLynne Stewart from Epilepsy NZ helps people understand what epilepsy is. By Isabella BPolice - Constable KennedyConstable Kennedy has to deal with lots of unkind people but he still has to be kind to them. By Jim HendersonAveril and the ChatBusAveril wanted to help kids who have problems or worries. She set up a ChatBus where people talk to her about problems and worries. They could help more kids if they had more money for more ChatBuses. It would be good if they had 5 ChatBuses. By Ethan LBrain injuryCathy Matthews helps people who have brain injuries. We learned that it is really important that we have to look after our brain. By Evie Plunket Barb Long works for Plunket. She helps people by teaching mums how to look after babies. By Paige M

Junior NewsWhat a long and busy term it has been. Swimming and a big walk has tested the resilience of many children in the junior syndicate. Thank you to all the parents who have helped with PMP, Fun Friday, swimming, and many other school activities. Without your tremendous support many of these activities would not be able to happen.PMP and Fun Friday will begin in week 2 of Term 2. Please come and help.It is wonderful to see how the language of ‘kindness’ has become embedded in our everyday interactions with each other. We have looked at kindness to ourselves, our families, animals, our school and our world. We will continue to have this value in front of the children throughout the year. Term 2 will see us making plans for the whole school movie where each class will have a 3-minute starring role. Running alongside this movie making we will be looking at Inventions from the point of people aspiring to make changes in the world. Each class will look at how we ‘ASPIRE” to do our best and create positive changes within our learning. Have a happy and restful holiday and we look forward to seeing you all back in Term 2 refreshed and ready to learn.

Kaikorai Kiwis Kaikorai Kiwis has had a busy and

successful start to 2013. The dates for

Term 2 are 15th and 29th May, 12th and 26th June and 10th July. If you

wish to come along please email

[email protected].

Recycling ClothingEarly next term Chrissy, the retail manager for the Op Shops run by Presbyterian Support, will visit the Middle Syndicate. We have heard that Op Shops are really short of winter clothes and we think Kaikorai kids can work together to make a difference. Have you any clothes at home that you no longer require, which could be donated to help others? The holidays would be a good time to hunt these out and wash them. Please bring clean clothing to school next term and we will give them to Chrissy when she visits. Unclaimed clothing from the lost property will also be donated.

Pink Shirt Day - Taking a Stand Against BullyingPink Shirt Day is Friday May 17. We invite children to wear something pink to give the message that we can work together to help stop to bullying. Pink Shirt Day started in Canada in 2007 when two high school students decided to stand up for a friend who had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.Pink Shirt Day will be a fundraising event on May 17, with money raised going to support the ChatBus. Expect to hear more about that next term.

Thanks to the Parent GroupThanks to the Parent Group for their support of the Marae visits and the School Walk in Term 1. These two events were subsidised or free due to their fundraising efforts.
