Genocide 101: The rundown, what is it?

The United Nations defines genocide as: “any of the following acts

committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national,

ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the

group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the

group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated

to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part1; imposing

measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly

transferring children of the group to another group” (OFFICE OF

GENOCIDE)

Genocide: The run down, what is it?

Genocide is not a new phenomenon, one of the earliest recorded

occurrences being in 478 BCE when the Athenians wiped out the

Spartan colony of Melos during the Peloponnesian War.

The years since then has seen genocide becoming worse in terms that

more and more people seem to get killed with every new occurrence

of genocide.

2.The Rwandan Genocide

Hotel Rwanda: Hutu and Tutsi Problem

Here’s some background

Rwanda is a small country in central Africa that was once a Belgian colony until 1962. The two groups residing in Rwanda were the Hutu majority and the Tutsi minority; the Tutsis were favoured by the Belgians and given power over the Hutu people because the Belgians believed the Tutsis looked more European. Belgians basically created the distinction between Hutu and Tutsi.

Rwanda was granted its independence in 1962, and they gave political power to the Hutus, which resulted in violence and subjugation towards the Tutsi people for many years.

The Rwandan Genocide

A civil war took place between 1990-1993, and on April 6 1994, the Hutu president’s plane was shot down and the Tutsis were blamed, creating the excuse Hutus needed to commit genocide.

Over a period of 100 days, Hutus, encouraged by radio broadcasts and leaders to attack the Tutsis, killed around 800,000 Tutsis and those who were sympathetic towards Tutsis. Killings were often carried out by ordinary citizens using machetes and rifles to kill their Tutsi neighbours.

Through tribunals like the Gacaca Courts, the people of Rwanda have been bringing individuals responsible for committing acts of genocide to justice, with the courts having tried around 1 million cases to date.

The Rwandan genocide seriously brought to question the validity of UN peacekeeping operations, as the UN was totally incapable (and possibly unwilling) to take action to stop the genocide.

4.The Armenian Genocide Government mandated extermination

The Ottoman government's systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians

Starting in 1915 Ottoman authorities rounded up, arrested, and deported around 270 Armenian leaders from Constantinople most of whom were later killed.

During and after WWI there was 2 phases to this genocide:

Phase 1: the wholesale killing of able bodied male population through massacre and forced labour

Phase 2: deportation of women, children, the elderly, and the infirm (ill) on death marches that lead to the Syrian desert

The Armenian Genocide

Driven forward by military escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water.

They were periodically subjected to robbery, rape, and massacre.

Most Armenian diaspora’s around the world were created as a direct result to this genocide.

The Ottoman Empire also targeted indigenous Christian ethnic minority groups: the Assyrians and the Ottoman Greeks.

These genocides were denied to be genocides by the government leaders of present day Turkey.

The Armenian genocide was used to define systematic and premeditated exterminations within legal parameters

The Armenian genocide is thought to be the first modern genocide.

This is because of the systematic and organized manner that they were massacred and exterminated.

It is the second most studied genocide after the Holocaust.
