One of the unique experiences as President of an organization such as Rotary

is that you are constantly amazed at the impact Rotary and Rotarians have in

the local and global community. When I look at the trails, parks and community

projects our own club has been involved in I wonder where our members have

found the time to achieve so much. When you expand that view to the many

International projects such as schools, water, sanitation and educational projects

you can stand amazed. Now translate that to 100 years and I am proud to be part

of an organization that has had continued positive impact across the world.

The Rotary Club of Duncan, along with 145 clubs – with 6000 members – across BC

is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first club, in Vancouver.

The Duncan club was founded only 17 years later. Our club, with about 65 members,

has been actively participating in community, youth and international projects for

83 years. Rotary in BC has a proud legacy. Rotary is active in one of the world’s

largest youth exchange programs; along with thousands of clubs world-wide, we

send local teenagers from the Cowichan Valley on both long-term (1 year) and

short-term (1 month summer) exchanges; most of them find this a life-changing

experience. Our members are proud of the legacy of Rotary International, an

impressive force for good in the world. Along with other charities, notably the Bill

and Melinda Gates Foundation, we have made real progress in ridding the world of

the scourge of polio. The Rotary Club of Duncan consists of enthusiastic members

from all walks of life in the Valley. We are always looking for new members with a

desire to give back to the community and participate in meaningful projects. Visit

Congratulations Rotary!The celebration of the centenary of Rotary BC is the perfect time to re� ect on the club’s activities in our area. Cowichan would be a very different place without the historic and ongoing contributions of the Rotary Club. Rotary provided seminal support for the 25-acre Rotary Park, the Coronary Care Unit of the Cowichan District

Hospital, the Chester� eld Sports Field and the Island Savings Centre. These facilities alone have contributed to the health, happiness and well-being of tens of thousands of children and families. Along with major projects, the Rotary encourages applications for a range of community undertakings of all themes, sizes and ideas. In fact, they

like projects that require sweat equity from their members. This is an organization whose members are committed, engaged and very hands-on. Yet still they do more —fundraising proceeds go all around the world to build and upgrade schools, deliver wheel chairs, immunize children, and more. Rotary never strays from their motto“Service Above Self”

The Chamber is proud to share members with Rotary, and to live in a community where Rotary bene� ts our citizens, and provides us with so many opportunities to give back.

Founded on June 21,1930, the Rotary Club of Duncan has a long and venerable history of community service in the Cowichan Valley, as well Internationally. Our club, now consisting of about 65 members, has been very active in the Valley for 83 years. In that time we have sponsored the charter of three more Clubs:

Chemainus Rotary-1950, South Cowichan Rotary-1991, Duncan Daybreak (co-sponsored by South Cowichan Rotary)-2000.

We have one main public fundraiser: The Rotary Dinner-Auction, occurring annually in February. We also hold the Rotary Pancake Breakfast annually in mid July. 100% of funds raised go to service projects - all club administrative costs are covered from members’ annual dues. Additionally, club members contribute funds annually to support the many Rotary International projects.

With the proceeds that we generate, our club funds a wide range of annual and one time projects. Our club focuses on: Community Service, Youth Programs and International Projects.

The Rotary Club of Duncan has been a constant and enthusiastic supporter of the Rotary Youth Exchange for 35 years. We participate in both long and short term exchanges: we’ve hosted students from all over the world and in turn have sent out students to many places. We also host the Annual Hector MacIntosh Speaking Competition, which started in 1980.

Rotary’s 5th avenue of service is “New Gen-

erations”. The future of our society is with

our young people. New Generations is young

people aged 12 to 30. Rotary dedicates itself to-

wards our youth and young adults through the

many service programs in their community.

Rotary instills commitment to service, leader-

ship, and civic consciousness with our young.

who are 15 to 19 years of age. They live and study in another country developing many life skills while learning a new culture and diversity.

RYLA — (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) for young adults aged 18-25. It provides leadership training, and recognizes youth who give back to their communities.

It’s a disease that most of us note only once in our lives: at the time of a simple inoculation that few will even remember. And yet, when the first polio vaccine was introduced 57 years ago, it came at a time of fear and even panic.

Polio, short for poliomyelitis, is an infection that can affect nerve cells in the spinal cord. It can strike at any age, but mainly affects children under five years of age. Discovered by Jonas Salk, the vaccine staunched the march of a disease that was as terrifying as it was deadly. Those it did not kill were left paralyzed.

Fear of the disease was enough to keep play-grounds empty in the mid 1950s and children inside. Salk’s discovery of the vaccine launched one of the most aggressive immunization cam-paigns the world has ever seen.

Today, most of the world is polio free with India earning the designation in 2012. In only three countries does the disease remain en-demic: Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

For Cowichan Rotarians, a world without polio is ‘this close’ as the PolioPlus campaign states.

Rotary has been involved in the fight to eradi-cate polio since 1985.

Despite the success, much work needs to be done. The focus is not only on the three coun-tries where polio remains, but also on ensuring it doesn’t reappear in other countries.

There are several allies in the fight. Along with Rotary International, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation together with United Nations have vowed to see polio’s complete eradication.

The fight is not cheap. Already Rotary has con-tributed more than $1.2 billion to wipe out the disease. But that has still left a funding gap that Rotarians fear could derail 25 years of effort.

Early last year, the World Health Assembly said polio eradication was a “programmatic emergency for global public health.” It takes 60 cents to save a child’s life by administering a po-lio vaccination.

In the last 5 years the RC of South Cowichan has spon-

sored and supported several humanitarian projects in Latin

America, including projects in Belize, Honduras and Nica-

ragua, by working with Rotary clubs in Latin America and

abroad. This support consists of � nancial support from our

local fundraisers supplemented by generous grants from

the Rotary Foundation. On some projects there has been

“hands on” work by South Cowichan club members who

travelled to the project site. Examples of these humanitar-

ian projects are:

Belize (San Ignacio)

Toilet buildings and hygiene education for 3 elementary

schools to prevent disease and improve literacy through

better school attendance.

Honduras (Santa Barbara)

Construction of elementary schools — to improve literacy

Addition to a vocational school — to improve employment

skills

Nicaragua (Chinandega)

Construction of clinics — to improve access to health care

Construction of schools — to improve education

Computers and supplies for schools — to improve literacy

Rotary Club of Duncan Daybreak meets on Fridays at 7am, & our home is the Cowichan Valley Inn. Daybreak is an enthusiastic young club in many ways. Over the past years we’ve averaged between 25-30 hard working members with a vision of promoting literacy, education and community both here and in Chimkola, Nepal. Whether we’re selling strawberries for our annual fundraiser, collecting donations for our food bank or building bridges to provide an Eco-friendly walking path at our local sportplex the Daybreakers are always willing to help. The Duncan Day Break club makes every effort to be current & relevant to the needs of our commu-nity. Working to add 1 ton of food each year to our food bank or changing our elementary school lit-eracy program to suit the electronic age. Our club believes in the potential of our youth with high school arts bursaries and the legacy of our elderly by supporting their independence with our new volunteer driver program in the Cowichan Valley. Service above Self, we hope will be our legacy, to our children, to their children & to our community.
