Working on the entire surface of theface except the eye lids,SorensensistemTM therapists use no

equipment other than their hands to assess thebody via the face. Within a 50-minute treatmentsession, which can be extended, subject to theclient’s requirements, we have a choice of up tofifteen different facial maps to incorporate into atailored treatment plan / session for the client.

Many of the facial maps are based on ancienthealing traditions from Japan, China andVietnam. Several more, however, have more

recently been devised by medical doctors who, having studied traditional healing methods, haveincorporated their intimate knowledge of theneuro-anatomy of the brain – which of course liesjust behind the face–into the treatment maps.

The face as a treatment area is so potent andeffective by virtue of its close location to thebrain. It is no accident that nature has placed allour sensory organs on the face. Responsible forsurveying our environment for possible threats, the sensory feedback from the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and facial skin needs the shortest possible

route to alert the brain to any danger so that itcan take immediate remedial action. As a result ofthis evolutionary development, the face isextremely rich in nerve endings, all supplying thesense organs and networking back to the controlcentre just behind it.

The principal oriental influence of facialreflexology is via the twelve major meridians(energy channels) that are mirrored on each sideof the body. Named over two thousand years agoafter what the ancient Chinese people believed tobe the organs vital for life, acupuncture points lieon these meridians closest to the surface of theskin. There are thirty-five acu-points which afacial reflexologist will use during a treatment.

The Mapuche of South America are comprisedof hundreds of smaller tribes, most of whom arenomadic and live in the higher reaches of theAndes. Danish reflexologists, Lone Sorensen, who devised SorensensistemTM had the rare

several healing systems: the oriental meridian system,

American tribe in the Andes, and the study of the nervous

system.

Postgraduate Training for PractitionersUpledger CranioSacral Therapy training is post graduate, designed for those already qualified in some aspect of healthcare, typically with experience in bodywork. The core training is 5 modules, developed over the last 25 years by Dr John Upledger and the Upledger Institute.

The first two, CST1 & 2 explore techniques to evaluate and treat the craniosacral system - the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord - from the bones to which they attach, thus having a profound effect on the nervous system.

The next two, SomatoEmotional Release (SER) 1 & 2, help us assist our clients to release emotional components of physically held trauma. This unique aspect of Dr Upledger’s approach draws on the limbic system’s natural tendency for imagery and other psychotherapeutic approaches while using the craniosacral rhythm and changes in tissue quality to keep ‘on track’, in a very client centred approach. The resedential 5 day Advanced CST course draws all the work together and you truly learn from experience.

Therapists and clients can experience exciting and amazing changes in their treatments even after using the techniques learned in CST1 and as you add in the other components you really do find a holistic approach to evaluation and treatment.

Intrigued? CST1 - SER2 are each 4 days, cost £610 and are open to most health practitioners.

The next CST1 s are: Bristol 9-12 March Brighton 23-26 May Solihull 15-18 Aug  2012

Holistic Health fortune to meet and study with a small tribe inArgentina, whom she observed treating the face.It is this map that we use as our assessmentmap, which represents a reflection of all the bodysystems on our face.

As Lone continues to teach around the world intwenty-four different countries, she seeks outmodern and traditional treatment methods andincorporates their most effective aspects intoFacial Reflexology (which is continuouslyevolving) and her own systems of hand and foot(Praxis Vertebralis) reflexology. Indeed, we havea system of neurologically based reflexology, called Temprana, which is applied to the face, hands and feet which principally for individualswith neuro imbalances.

Equally important in our 21st century, is theappearance of the face itself. We use this area ofour body to express ourselves more than ourhands or any other part of our anatomy. Thecomplex facial muscle structure is not as easilykept in tone as body muscles are. After a courseof 50-minute facial reflexology sessions, the skinof the client’s face appears to be brighter, morenourished and radiant too. CHW
