Adding servers to AppSyncLearn how to add your servers to your AppSync configuration.

Before you begin

Review this information before you begin. When you add a server, AppSync registersthe server in its database and discovers the supported applications on that server. Ifthe host plug-in software is not already present, AppSync attempts to install it. If thehost plug-in software is present, AppSync attempts to register it. An error occurs ifthe host plug-in software is already registered to another AppSync server.

l The servers must be accessible over IP to the AppSync server.

l The AppSync server must be accessible to the application server by hostname.

l You need to supply credentials for an account that has local administratorprivileges on the server.

l For Windows servers: if the server is not part of a domain, disable the followinguser access control: User Access Control: Run all administratorsin Admin Approval Mode .

l On Windows, AIX/Linux, AppSync can push install the host plugin software. OnWindows, you have the option to manually install the software on the applicationservers.

l For Windows Servers: If the Windows Server is used for mounting a copy, automount must be disabled. To manually disable automount run diskpart at acommand prompt then enter automount disable at the DISKPART> prompt.

Installation

Adding servers to AppSync 15

Page 16: AppSync Installation and Configuration Guide · n VNX, VNXe, Unity n VMAX/ PowerMax n XtremIO n RecoverPoint n VPLEX n ViPR Controller n Dell SC l If mounting copies to a virtual

l Register the Virtual Center managing the application server VM. Adding a VMwarevCenter Server provides more information on adding a VMware vCenter Server toAppSync.

This operation requires the Resource Administrator role in AppSync.Procedure

1. Select Settings > Servers.

2. Click Add. You can select to add Windows Servers or UNIX Servers.

Note

Dell EMC recommends that you add a UNIX host using the FQDN thatcorresponds to the physical IP of the host.

3. For each server, enter the host name or IP address, domain\username, andpassword.

Optionally, you can automatically repeat the credentials from the first entry forthe subsequent entries. For a local account, use the server name as the domain. If you are protecting databases in an Exchange DAG, add the DAG memberservers that host the database copies that you want to protect.

If you want to protect SQL Server databases in availability groups on a WindowsAlwaysOn failover cluster, add each node of the cluster. If you are protectingSQL Server databases in a clustered instance of SQL Server, add the SQLServer virtual server. Before you add the SQL Server virtual server, you mustfirst install the AppSync agent host plug-in software on all of the nodes in thecluster using the Add Servers wizard or by manually installing the software.

Note

If SQL Server virtual server is added before the AppSync agent host plug-in isinstalled on all physical nodes of the cluster, Add virtual server can fail.

In a PowerHA (HACMP) cluster environment, do the following:

l Add active node of the cluster

l Add passive node of the cluster

l Add the service label IP of the Oracle database or File system that you wantto protect

4. Expand Push Install Settings to customize agent host-plugin installation.

You can specify the agent host plug-in version to install, the port, and thelocation where to install the agent host plug-in. For a UNIX host, the defaultinstall location is /opt/emc/ and the default port is 22. By default, AppSyncextracts the host plug-in to a folder named appsync under this location. Thesame rule is applicable even if you change the install location. For example, ifthe location is /opt/emc/user1/agent, the AppSync agent host plug-in willbe under /opt/emc/user1/agent/appsync. These values apply to eachserver that you are adding.

Available plug-in versions depend on what is available on the AppSync server. On Windows servers, the default port is 10004; valid range is from 1024 to49151. The default install location is system drive\Program Files\EMC\AppSync Host Plug-in.

UNIX host plugin push install with SUDO userThis section describes the prerequisites for adding a UNIX agent host with SUDO userprivileges to the AppSync server. This is useful in secure environments where you donot want AppSync to use root user privileges.

AIX deployment requirements

l OpenSSH and OpenSSL packages. OpenSSL is a pre-requisite for OpenSSHinstallation.

l The following packages are mandatory for AppSync to work with AIX hosts.

n BZip2 package. Zlib package is a prerequisite for Bzip2 installation.

n SUDO package (only if you want the SUDO feature), or OpenSSH andOpenSSL. Zlib is a pre-requisite for enabling the SUDO feature.

n CentOS.

n Supported Oracle database software that is installed on mount hosts fordatabase recovery.

n Supported Oracle database that is created on production hosts with /etc/oratab entries.

n Valid Oracle database configurations as described previously in this section.

Package locations:

l OpenSSH and OpenSSL packages are on the OS CD.

l Bzip2, Zlib, and SUDO are on the IBM AIX Toolbox website.

To perform a push install of the AppSync host plugin on an AIX host from the AppSyncserver:

1. Install the SUDO RPM package.

2. Install zlib, if it is not already installed.

3. Install OpenSSH.

4. Run SFTP server as root.

5. Create a {user} using smit on the AIX host where you plan to run the AppSynchost plug-in. .

6. Grant the {user} read, write, and execute permissions to the install locationdirectory (and to all its subdirectories recursively) that you select in Add UnixServers of the AppSync GUI.

7. Edit the sudoers file using the visudo command. (You must edit this file asroot.)

8. Add the following three lines at the end of the file:

Defaults:{user} !requirettyDefaults:{user} !env_reset{user} ALL = (root) NOPASSWD: /{install location}/appsync/acp

Where {user} is the user name you created, {install path} is the locationwhere you want to install the AppSync host plug-in.

Licensing in AppSync 27

Page 28: AppSync Installation and Configuration Guide · n VNX, VNXe, Unity n VMAX/ PowerMax n XtremIO n RecoverPoint n VPLEX n ViPR Controller n Dell SC l If mounting copies to a virtual

Licensing in AppSyncAppSync provides a 90 day trial license for all supported arrays.

AppSync has the following licence types:

l Full license - Is an array based license.

l Starter Bundle license - Allows you to use unlimited amount of storage on aspecific array with some restrictions on the features supported by AppSync. Thisis only available for Unity, VMAX All Flash/PowerMax, and XtremIO arrays. With Starter Bundle, you can:

n Add only one storage array per AppSync server.

n Mount only 20 application copies. It can be a snapshot of Oracle, MicrosoftSQL, Microsoft Exchange, File systems, or VMware datastores. For example:

– If you have 20 volumes in one database, and that database is part of aservice plan that mounts, it will constitute one of the 20. It is not based onthe number of volumes.

– If you have 20 file systems subscribed to a service plan and is mounted, itwill be considered as 20 mounts.

Note

– If you add additional arrays or mount additional copies, the license is markedas non-compliant, and alerts are sent to the configured recipient addressspecified in the AppSync > Settings > Appsync server settings page.

– If a permanent license for one array is added with starter pack license foranother array, both the licenses are marked as non-compliant. After thestarter pack license is upgraded to a permanent license, you must reapplythe permanent license for the second array, or wait for the license validationthread to run to clear the non compliance status for the second array.

– RecoverPoint, VPLEX, XtremIO native replication, Unity native replication, and remote SRDF copies are not supported.

l Volume Software License (VSL) - Allows you to use a specific amount of storageregardless of the array type.

Note

If you already have an APPSYNC_VSL license installed, and if you attempt toinstall another APPSYNC_VSL file, the new file overrides the content of the earlierfile. Therefore, before upgrading the license, take a backup of the earlier content.

l Unlimited license for DPS - This is similar to a VSL license without anyenforcement on capacity or utilization. Allows you to use storage from any type ofarray configured in AppSync with no limitation on the amount of storage fromeach array.

Adding VMAX, VMAX3, VMAX All Flash, and PowerMax storageFollow this procedure to add VMAX, VMAX3 VMAX All Flash, and PowerMax arrays toAppSync.

Before you begin

Note

The AppSync Support Matrix is the authoritative source of information on supportedsoftware and platforms.

This operation requires the Resource Administrator role in AppSync.

The SMI-S Provider host managing the VMAX arrays must be configured in theAppSync server.

Refer to the AppSync Support Matrix for the minimum version of Solution Enablerrequired to support VMAX3, PowerMax, and VMAX2 arrays.

Note

After upgrading to AppSync 3.9, or after upgrading the SE provider, rediscover allVMAX arrays in AppSync. This action updates the provider configuration information.

To manage both VMAX2 and VMAX3 arrays using a single SMI-S Provider, refer to theAppSync Support Matrix for the minimum version of Solution Enabler that the SMI-Shost must be running.

To use a single SMI-S Provider for configuring multiple (local and/or remote) VMAXarrays in AppSync, ensure that you assign a minimum of 8 Gatekeeper devices fromeach VMAX array locally to the SMI-S host.

In the case of remote SRDF copies (on R2 devices), to support Gold service plans,AppSync requires a single SMI-S provider that has access to both the local andremote array. For Silver and Bronze service plans, local and remote arrays can haveseparate SMI-S providers. Refer to the AppSync VMAX Array Support Guide on https://support.emc.com for additional information.

AppSync does not support SRDF between VMAX2 and VMAX3 arrays even if thearrays are managed by the same SMI-S Provider.

If you want to use one SMI-S provider for the local array and another SMI-S providerfor the remote array, ensure that you set the preferred SMI-S provider in AppSync.AppSync discovers both the local and remote array in each of the SMIS-provider (oneas locally connected and the other as remotely connected). By default, AppSync setsthe locally connected as the preferred SMI-S provider. You can change the preferredSMI-S provider in AppSync.

Procedure

1. On the AppSync console, select Settings > Storage Infrastructure.

2. In the lower left corner of the console, click Add in the drop-down list, and thenselect VMAX Storage to launch the Add VMAX storage wizard.

3. On the first page of the wizard, type SMI-S provider credentials including Nameor IP address, Port number, User Name, and Password.

4. Click Enter to display the Select VMAX page.

If this is a VMAX2 array, then you can allowAppSync to create devices in a specific storage pool, if no target devices arefound in the storage group. You can also select a storage pool to provisiontarget devices.

You can configure a combination of storage groups and storage pools or storageresource pools. If the suitable target devices are not available in the configuredstorage group, AppSync provisions target devices from the configured storagepools or storage resource pool.

Note

l VMAX3 and VMAX All Flash arrays with single storage resource pool issupported in AppSync. Multiple storage resource pool is not supported.

l Only storage groups which are not part of any masking view are listed andavailable for selection. If a storage group is configured to pick targetdevices, you must create and add target copy LUNs that you want AppSyncto use in the storage groups. AppSync removes the devices from the storagegroup at the time of mount and adds them to the storage group for themount host. The devices are added back to the storage group when the copyis expired.

l The same storage groups must not be configured in two different AppSyncservers.

l You can configure storage resource pools on VMAX3, VMAX All Flash, andPowerMax arrays with a single storage resource pool.

l AppSync does not allow you to configure storage resource pool for aVMAX3, VMAX All Flash, and PowerMax array, if there are already multiplestorage resource pools configured.

7. After selecting these options, click Finish.

A pop-up appears with a Successfully Configured VMAX storage message.

Adding and registering ViPR Controller storage to AppSyncThis topic describes how to add ViPR Controller to AppSync.

Before you begin

This procedure requires the Storage Administrator role in AppSync and ViPRController Provider Tenant Administrator credentials.ViPR Controller must be registered and discovered into AppSync. AppSync is notmulti-tenant aware and allows only one credential to be associated per storagesystem, therefore configure ViPR Controller with AppSync using ViPR ControllerTenant Administrator credentials. These credentials provide ViPR Controller systemrights.

Before adding the ViPR Controller storage, consider the following:

l AppSync uses ViPR Controller Client APIs to communicate with a ViPR Controllersoftware-defined storage system.

l Client APIs makes REST calls to ViPR Controller internally on port 4443 (default).

l As part of ViPR Controller software-defined storage system discovery, AppSyncdiscovers all the controller nodes that are managed by a particular virtual IP.

n By default AppSync uses the IP address that is used to register the ViPRSystem. Use the ViPR Controller public virtual IP address(VIP) to register thearray.

n You can change the IP preference and set AppSync to use a particular node IPaddress for all the REST communication.

Procedure

1. On the AppSync console, go to Settings.

2. From the Add drop-down list select ViPR Controller.

The Add ViPR wizard launches.

3. Type the ViPR Virtual Name or IP Address to register ViPR.

4. Type the Global user name.

This name is the username for the ViPR Controller.

5. Enter the ViPR Controller Password.

6. Protocol and Port are pre-configured.

They are set by default.

7. Click OK.

The ViPR Controller details page (Settings Storage Infrastructure) launcheswhere you can view the added ViPR Controller instance with configurationinformation.

Results

ViPR Controller details page launches (Settings > Storage Infrastructure) where youcan view the added ViPR Controller instance with configuration information. If ViPR Controller credentials are modified, the AppSync Storage Administrator canreset the ViPR credentials on the Settings page.
