that almost needs nointroduction. It plays a very

simple role. It helps youconverse in a language thatyou are unfamiliar with.

Thus, it comes in handywhen you're travelling to a

languages, including 12

Indian languages, making

it easier for you to conversewith local people.

Interface (UPI). The interface

has been developed by theNational Payments Corporationof India (NPCI), the umbrella

organization for all retailpayments in the country, with

the aim to make money transfers

between any two parties easy,quick and hassle free.

The answer is: Kind of, but it's farmore well defined and standardizedacross banks, which allows you topay directly from your bank accountto different merchants without thehassle of typing your card details, ornet banking/wallet password. Thismeans you can initiate a bankaccount transfer from anywherewith a few clicks on yoursmartphone.

IS IT LIKENEFT/RTGS/IMPS?

Yup! The UPI makesmoney transfer as easy as sendingtext messages from yoursmartphone.

Best part? The UPI also eliminatesthe need of knowing the recipient'sname, bank account number, andIFSC code (or bank branch) totransfer the money. All you need toknow the recipient's virtual ID.

Once you register for UPI with yourbank, a unique ‘virtual address’ willbe created. This virtual ID is just likean email address that could belinked to your name, phone orAadhaar Card number, so forexample, if your phone number is1234567890, then your virtualaddress would be 1234567890@axis(if your bank is Axis Bank) or1234567890@sbi (if you're an SBIBank customer), and so on.

To ensure security, the two-factorauthentication (2FA) is mandated byRBI, thus 2FA is also a part of theUPI. However, it uses MPIN (a mobilepersonal identification number) asthe 2FA instead of a One-TimePassword (OTP). So, to initiate thetransaction through UPI, you'll needonly 2 things: a) Virtual ID andb) MPIN.

MPIN would be similar to an ATMPIN. Your bank will issue you an

Because it'susing the phone to verifytransactions, UPI is secure –someone else can't just enter yourVirtual ID /or MPIN and spend

HOW IT WORKS

Imagine buying grocery from asupermarket by paying cash. Youhandover the cash, the cashierhands you a receipt and thepurchased goods. UPI is as simple asthis. Instead of handing over thecash, you tell your Virtual ID to thecashier. The cashier generates aninvoice through UPI, you approve itusing your mobile phone and thepayment is made!

adopt UPI as an effort to lower thecash economy. Quoting RBI data, thereport said the cash floating in thesystem is about 18 per cent of theGDP, making the country one of themost cash-dependent economies inthe world.

“The RBI wants to cut down on cashdependence and the UPI has beenbrought in to do just that. It willreduce the effort, time and costincurred on simple transactions,below Rs. 1 lakh. Through UPI, two

or three bank accounts can be linkedand therefore any payment/withdrawal can then be done by justsending a message on this app,” thereport said.

According to a World Bank report,only 53 per cent of the Indianpopulation or 636 million peoplehave bank accounts, while close over1,000 million have mobile phones. Ifused to its full potential, UPI can

Since UPI does not rely on peoplehaving debit or credit cards at all,and simplifies net banking instead, itcould open up online payments for ahuge number of people.

Furthermore, UPI can potentiallyeliminate the need for maintaining amobile wallet, as UPI's Virtual ID isnot limited only to individuals. Thisis a significant step towards movinginto a cashless economy.

Banks are yet to roll outthe UPI-enabled service

but some are currentlyrunning pilot apps. Itwill take 1-2 months forthem to upgrade theirapps and offer them tocustomers. NPCI believesthat the new paymentsystem will take 1-2years to stabilize.
