Introduction

This is the fourteenth edition of Approved Pesticides for use on Vegetable Crops, which was

first published in 1998. The following abbreviations have been used: HI – Harvest Interval,

Max No – maximum number of sprays allowed, OLA – off-label approval, EUA – Emergency Use Authorisation, DR – deregistered.

Off-labels are included, brief details of which are included in the Appendix of this publication, listed in alphabetical order. Changes made since the last edition are listed at the end of the

book along with a commentary highlighting the main points.

This publication is intended to provide growers with a quick reference to the commonly available approved pesticides, which can be used on vegetable crops. Not all generic

products are mentioned. The term pesticide includes fungicides, insecticides, herbicides

and molluscicides (slug pellets).

The Pesticide Control Service (PCS) of the Department of Agriculture has divided into two

divisions – the PCD or Pesticide Control Division and the PRD or Pesticide Registration Division. The PCD is responsible for implementing pesticide legislation and publish an

annual list of authorised pesticides, the most recent being Pesticides 2015. This can be

downloaded from the Department’s website, www.pcs.agriculture.gov.ie, where you will

also find a searchable database.

Once a pesticide is cleared for use the onus is on the grower to use that product responsibly.

The instructions for the correct use of a pesticide are on the product label, which is a legally binding document that should be read carefully. By law, a grower can use a pesticide on a

crop only if its use is specified on the label. The label also provides a precise summary of

precautions to be taken in relation to how a pesticide is handled, applied and stored.

Take note that in addition to on-label uses there are many off-label applications (Extension

of Field of Use). Growers must be in possession of the relevant Extension document before

use. Full details are available from the Teagasc Food Assurance website at the following address: www.teagasc.ie/faol; on the opening page click on Crops Best Practice >

Extension of Field of Use (Food). There is also an off-label listing available in PDF format on

the PCS website. Pesticide Postings, part of the Teagasc off-label website, is a record of the changes made to that site.

Growers need to be aware that off-label uses are applied at their own risk and that the

application rates quoted need to be tested for crop safety purposes on a small area first. Proceed with caution in using off-label recommendations on your crops, as damage may

occur. Always consult with your crop adviser before use.

To ensure compliance with the regulations and to reassure consumers that the food they eat

is safe, the Department regularly test for pesticide residues on a range of foodstuffs,

including vegetables. Samples are taken at wholesale level and if a residue is detected it must not exceed the Maximum Residue Level (MRL). MRL’s have been established for all

pesticides and represent the maximum residue that should arise in food when pesticides are

correctly used.

Every effort has been made to ensure that the details in this book are correct. However the

definitive source of information on pesticides is the PCS and if you have any doubts about

the contents of a product label telephone 01-615 7552.

Commentary on 2014

New pesticide regulations - SUD Under the Sustainable Use Directive all spray operatives have to be registered by 26 November 2015. To be registered you have qualify as a professional user by successfully completing a course and then you can apply on the PCS website (www.pcs.agriculture.gov.ie). You can qualify for a boom sprayer (greater than 3m in length) or for a knapsack sprayer. You need both certificates if you use both types of sprayer on the farm. All sprayers over 5 years will have to be tested by November 2016 – this test procedure does not apply to knapsack sprayers. PCS The PCS have a new look website but the material on it is very similar to the old. However you can now access the product labels using one of the links on the Products page. Plus a list of the current off-labels is also provided. Buffer zones are getting increasingly mentioned on labels and the Department have developed a STRIPE tool to enable farmers to minimize the effects of pesticides when sprayed close to watercourses. Check it out on the opening page of the PCS website. Deregistered products A number of older products were deregistered during the year: Emerger, Sencorex WP, Cuprene 50, Goltix Flowable, Whelehan Linuron and Draza Elite. However the WP version of Sencorex has been replaced by Sencorex Flo and the off-label for use on carrot has followed through. But this is not the case with the replacement of Goltix Flowable with Goltix 70 SC – we still have to get the off-label for the older product on parsnip transferred across. Gamit This useful herbicide for brassicas and carrots has been withdrawn as it was only authorized as an Emergency Use for 2014. As it’s expected to have it reinstated for 2015 the reference to it has been left in the book – but only use the product if the EUA is reissued. Infinito The MRL for propamocarb has been reduced across a range of crops. This is one of the actives in Infinito which is used on cabbage and cauliflower to control downy mildew. As there has been a big reduction from 10 to 0.7 mg/kg in cabbage the advice would be to use it no later than the end of October. The old rate of 10 mg/kg is unchanged on cauliflower. Maximum of one spray for both. Wing P The Wing P off-label was revised in 2014 to widen its scope. Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, lettuce and herbs were added to the original crops of cabbage, bulb onion, garlic, shallot and salad onion. To be applied pre-planting for brassicas. Decis There was a replacement off-label in 2014 that added in new crops in addition to the original one of leeks. The new ones are carrot, parsnip, horseradish, celeriac, beetroot, Jerusalem artichoke, parsley root, radish and salsify. Rovral WG This off-label was also changed to include a drench treatment for white and red cabbage pre-storage. Under threat Aramo is going to be deregistered on 31 May 2015 with a use-up date of 30 November 2017. This was purely a commercial decision by the company. Again for commercial reasons Bayer are keen to move the current vegetable recommendations on their Folicur label over to the Rudis (prothioconazole) label and drop the Folicur label. Aphox and Totril are also under threat but for the time being remain registered. New products There are very few new products coming onto the market for vegetable crops. Quite the reverse in fact with more disappearing than coming on stream. Basagran was introduced last season as an off-label use on leek and salad onion, Starane came in for on bulb onion and Nemguard garlic granules are now available for eelworm control on carrot and parsnip.
