Introduction

This is the twelfth edition of Approved Pesticides for use on Vegetable Crops, which was firstpublished in 1998. The following abbreviations have been used: HI – Harvest Interval, MaxNo. – maximum number of sprays allowed, OLA – off-label approval, EUA – Emergency UseAuthorisation, DR – deregistered.

Off-labels are included, brief details of which are included in the Appendix of this publication, listed in alphabetical order. Changes made since the last edition are listed at the end of thebook along with a commentary highlighting the main points.

This publication is intended to provide growers with a quick reference to the commonlyavailable approved pesticides, which can be used on vegetable crops. Not all genericproducts are mentioned. The term pesticide includes fungicides, insecticides andherbicides. Molluscicides (slug pellets) are not included as most products can be appliedacross all crops with the exception of Draza Elite, which has specific crops listed on the label– hence its inclusion.

The Pesticide Control Service (PCS) of the Department of Agriculture has changed its nameto the Pesticide Registration and Control Division (PRCD). The PRCD is responsible forimplementing pesticide legislation and publish an annual list of authorised pesticides,[p themost recent being Pesticides 2013. This can be downloaded from the Department’swebsite, www.pcs.agriculture.gov.ie, where you will also find a searchable database.

Once a pesticide is cleared for use the onus is on the grower to use that product responsibly. The instructions for the correct use of a pesticide are on the product label, which is a legallybinding document that should be read carefully. By law, a grower can use a pesticide on acrop only if its use is specified on the label. The label also provides a precise summary ofprecautions to be taken in relation to how a pesticide is handled, applied and stored.

Take note that in addition to on-label uses there are many off-label applications (Extensionof Field of Use). Growers must be in possession of the relevant Extension document beforeuse. Full details are available from the Teagasc Food Assurance website at the followingaddress: www.teagasc.ie/faol; on the opening page click on Crops Best Practice >Extension of Field of Use (Food). There is also an off-label listing available in PDF format onthe PCS website. Pesticide Postings, part of the Teagasc off-label website, is a record of thechanges made to that site.

Growers need to be aware that off-label uses are applied at their own risk and that theapplication rates quoted need to be tested for crop safety purposes on a small area first.Proceed with caution in using off-label recommendations on your crops, as damage mayoccur. Always consult with your crop adviser before use. Let the user beware.

To ensure compliance with the regulations and to reassure consumers that the food they eatis safe, the Department regularly test for pesticide residues on a range of foodstuffs, including vegetables. Samples are taken at wholesale level and if a residue is detected itmust not exceed the Maximum Residue Level (MRL). MRL’s have been established for allpesticides and represent the maximum residue that should arise in food when pesticides arecorrectly used.

Every effort has been made to ensure that the details in this book are correct. However thedefinitive source of information on pesticides is the PRCD, and if you have any doubts aboutthe contents of a product label telephone 01-615 7552.

Commentary on 2012

New productsThere aren’t a huge amount of new additions since the last publication. Rudis is a newactive for disease control in brassicas, leeks, carrots and parsnips. In relation to off-labelswev’e gained Nativo for parsnips, Ridomil Gold for lettuce and Previcur Energy for spinach.Last but not least – we’ve finally obtained Gamit (initially as an Emergency Use) for mostbrassicas and carrots; this is a residual herbicide that’s useful as a tank mixer.

PenncozebOne of the labels that was reregistered last year was Penncozeb (mancozeb). Carrots, tomatoes and celery were lost while cereals, apples, pears and onions were retained on thenew label. Additional losses of beetroot and parsnips arose from the loss of an off-label onthe old product. However new off-labels on both versions of the product - WDG and WP -added ornamentals, blueberries, gooseberries, salad onions plus blackcurrants to the mix.

CeleryThere’s three problem areas with this crop: weed, aphid and leaf spot control. Last year wehad Emergency Uses for linuron and Plenum which were essential additions for weed andaphid control respectively; and will be needed again for 2013. Leaf spot control has becomeproblematical since the withdrawal of Bravo from the crop. And to make matters worsePenncozeb is on the way out for this crop – 2013 is the last season of use.

BravoThe situation regarding Bravo (chlorothalonil) is as follows: the relatively ‘new’ reregisteredlabel (PCS 03452) only covers cereals but has off-label uses for Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bulb onion, salad onion, leeks and asparagus. Take note that the deregisteredCT 500 (same as Bravo) which has a use-up period to 14 November 2013 covers cabbageamongst other crops already covered by the new Bravo off-label. But we have lost the use ofchlorothalonil on broccoli. Chlorothalonil is also available in mixtures in Amistar Opti andFolio Gold.

Dow ShieldDow Shield made a comeback in 2012 after being missing for a number of years. Howevercompared to last time around the label has shrunk and now includes just Brussels sprouts, swedes, turnips and beetroot. Whelehans who handle the product have dropped WhelehanShield which they originally introduced to plug the gap until Dow Shield was reintroduced.

BasilexThis useful fungicide for the plant raiser and lettuce grower disappeared in December 2011with the finishing of the use-up period. It is still registered in the UK and it’s expected tomake a reappearance on the Irish market during 2013 as a new formulation.

ProplantProplant (PCS 01529) was deregistered in January 2013 and was replaced by a new label(PCS 03994). The label now just covers Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower.Cabbage, leeks, field lettuce and bulb onions have been dropped. In addition the off-labeluse of Proplant on protected lettuce has been revoked as of 1 January 2013.

New pesticide regulationsThe Sustainable Use Directive was passed into Irish law in May 2012. The National ActionPlan which translates the law into practice on the ground has yet to be published so it will be2014 before any concrete changes take place. IPM will be mandatory from 2014, all sprayoperatives will have to be certified by November 2015 and sprayer testing will be obligatoryfrom 2015. But overall the new legislation is not as draconian as first feared when the draftdocumentation was initially published.
