KUALA LUMPUR - The Higher EducationMinistry has given its approval to PutraBusiness School (PBS) of UPM (formerlyknown as the Graduate School ofManagement) to be a licensed businessschool with full autonomy in its operationmatters.

The announcement was made by Y.B.Dato' Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin during apress conference and certificate presentationto the Facultyof Economics and Managementand Putra Business School (PBS) for beingaccreditated by AACSB International. PBSwill now be governed by the Putra BusinessSchool Foundation, and operate as a history-making, first-of-its-kind business school: aprivate entity within a public university

When asked by reporters for thedifference between the new and previousadministrations, Dato' Seri explained, "Beingautonomous is the basis for excellence. The

Ministry awards antonomous status to publicinstitutions to ensure the universities are alsoready to award the same to the institutionsunder them such as Centres of Excellence,Business Schools, etc."

On the same note, the former ViceChancellor of UPM,Dato' Ir Dr. Radin UmarRadin Sohadi added, "What's importantin being autonomous is that it allows PBSto choose its own talents. PBS is using a'business' business school model, not an'academic' business school model. Thecurrent practice in public institutions isthat lecturers are required to have a PhDand need to be supported with the numberof publications in journals, etc. However, inPBS,we require talents that have the industryexperience in order to bring the real world tothe classroom."

When asked to further elaborate on theaccreditation, Dato' Seri Khalid explained,"Accreditation is not a ranking. Rankingsare conducted by companies whereas

accreditation is carried out by professionalbodies that are experts in a particular field,"the Minister informed the reporters.

"There are thirteen business schools inMalaysia. As UPM has been accreditated, itshould be an example and a catalyst to otherbusiness schools to follow suit. On behalfof the Ministry, I would like to congratulateUPM for paving the way and proving thatour business school is at par with other topbusiness schools such as the London BusinessSchool, INSEAD,University of Pennsylvania,Harvard University,YaleUniversity,ColumbiaUniversity,EDHECBusiness School, WarwickBusiness School and University of Toronto,"he added.

"What is Significant is that not only PBSis accreditated but the faculty too," he added, referring to the Faculty of Economics andManagement.

AACSBInternational or Association toAdvanceCollegiateSchools of Business, whichwas established in 1916, is the longest serving

global accrediting body for business schoolsthat offer undergraduate, masters anddoctorate degrees in business and accounting.

Mr. John J. Fernandes, the Presidentand CEO of AACSBInternational, said inhis speech, "When world business schoolsacknowledge UPMas one of the best, one ofthe most advanced in management education,it speaks very highly of UPMas not only beingrecognised locallybut also internationally."

"Asthe word 'accreditation' comes fromthe Latin word 'accreditus', meaning 'trust',it means AACSBInternational trusts UPMto meet its mission and to do what it saysit is supposed to do for its community andstakeholders," he explained.

He congratulated UPMfor being the firstbusiness school in Malaysia to be accreditatedand believed UPM could lead, to be anexample and coach other business schools inMalaysia that wish to get AACSBaccreditation.

Universiti Putra Malaysia is only thesixth university in South East Asia with

such accreditation. Other countries withAACSBaccreditated schools are Singapore(3), Philippines (1) and Thailand (1). Theaccreditation process involves rigorousinternal review, evaluation, and adjustmentand can take several years to fulfill 21requirements set by AACSBInternational. Allaccredited schools must go through a peerreview process every five years in order tomaintai I their accreditation.

Naib Canselor UPM, Prof. Datuk Dr.Mohd.

Firdaus Abdullah yangmenyifatkan kejayaan UPM bukan sahajahasil kendalian universiti tetapi berkat tunjukajar jurulatih MSN.

UPM students produce nutritiousmanqo-based Vit·A·Go snackBy Muhamad Najkhan Mazlan

SERDANG- The wastage of mangoes and thelack of nutrition among Kenyan children havemotivated six UPM postgraduate studentsfrom the Faculty of Food Science Technology(FSTM), to develop Vit-A-Go,a tasty snackenriched with vitamin A.

According to Sew Chang Chew, leader ofthe team that also includes Mohd AsrafMohdZainuddin, Najla Gooda Sahib, Tan Tai Boon,Kuan Chee Hao and Lasekan Adeseye 0, Vit-A-Go is produced from overripe mangoes, which are usually thrown away, and regularconsumption of this innovative snack will helpalleviate Vitamin Adeficiency in the body.

"The idea for this project was promptedby our desire to investigate ways of producingnutritious food economically and convenientlyto overcome the problem of nutritiondeficiency in developing countries," explainedSew.

"Our research discovered that Kenyaproduces lots of mangoes but due to theshort harvesting period and inconsistency offruit quality, a sizeable portion of the harvestgoes to waste. Added to this was the realizationof the critical problem of malnutrition amongKenyan children," Sew revealed at the PutraCipta press conference held here.

Sew said Vit-A-Gois easily produced byblending overripe mango flesh puree with

sugar and nitric acid.'/\fter drying, the mixture is carved and

packed. The cost of producing a sachet of Vit-A-Go is approximately RMO.20 to RMl," hesaid.

The team's only female member, NajlaGooda Sahib chipped in to announce that Vit-A-Gobagged the First Prize at the recent Instituteof Food Technologies Student Association-Developing Solutions for Developing Country(IFTSA-DSDC)held in Las Vegas,Nevada, USAon june 28th.

"Vit-A-Go drew the panel's interestfor its low cost, short processing period, uncomplicated manufacturing and its highVitamin Anutritional value compared to othersnacks currently available in the market," shesaid.

UPM develops device to keeptrack of Alzheimer patientsBy Muhamad Najkhan Mazlan

SERDANG - Four researchers from theInstitute of Gerontology (IG), UniversitiPutra Malaysia (UPM) have developed adevice called Alzheimer's-Real Time LocationSystem (A-RTLS)using low radio frequency tomonitor the movement of Alzheimer patients.

The technology was developed over threeyears by Assoc. Prof. Sr. Dr. Abdul RashidMohamed Shariff, Assoc. Prof. Dr. AhmadRodzi Mahmud, Dr. Zaiton Ahmad and apostgraduate student, Mohd Fadhil Abuhan.

Head researcher, Dr. Abdul Rashidexplained that A-RTLS uses wirelesstechnology to track a tag placed on theAlzheimer patient.

"Using' radio frequency, and trackingdevices placed at various locations in the carecentre, the Alzheimer patient's movementsand location are monitored on a computerscreen that displays a two-dimensional floorplan.

"Wearing the tag does not in any wayhinder the routine movements of the patientas it is both small in size and lightweight.

"The technology lessens the burden ofthe caretakers at the center and allows forclose monitoring, thus. helping to improvethe quality of life for both patients and theircaretakers," said Dr. Abdul Rashid at thePutra Cipta press conference here.

According to Dr.Abdul Rashid, the systemdevice is divided into two parts: the hardwarecontaining the tracking device (tag), a reader,a computer loaded with the engine trackingsoftware, sever software as well as applicationsoftware.

He added that A-RTLS is user-friendly,effective, time saving, safe and comes at areasonable cost.

"The wireless long distance trackingsystem is effective within 100m indoor and200m outdoor.

"The use of radio frequency at 5.8GHz isapproved by the Health Ministry and is safefor the users. Abig advantage of the A-RTLSisits ability to monitor several patients with thetag at the same time," said Dr Abdul Rashid.

According to the inventors, the A-RTLSissuitable for Alzheimer care centres as well asold folks' homes and mental asylums aroundthe country.

Meanwhile, IGDirector, Dr. Tengku AizanHamid said the number of Alzheimer patientshas escalated with the aging population in thecountry and will double in the next 18 years.According to her, this increase in the numberof Alzheimer patients will lead to an increasedemand for care centres.

The findings of Dr Abdul Rashid and histeam were recognized when they walked awaywith a gold medal at the Malaysia Research,Invention and Innovation Expo (PRPO heldfrom July 17th -19th this year.

IV-Grooving'Cutter Technologyto boost Malaysia'sbamboo industryBy Muhamad Najkhan Mazlan

SERDANG - The demand for bamboo asa wood substitute in the wood industryhas driven a group of researchers fromUniversiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) develop the"V-Grooving"method for cutting bamboo.

This innovative method is the first of itskind in the world. The "V-Grooving" methodflattens bamboo for use as boards, flooringand as a substitute for multi-purposes in thewood-based industry.

A researcher from UPM's Faculty ofForestry, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Edi Suhaimi Bakarsaid the manufacturing of laminated bambooPBL using the "V-Grooving"method is morepractical for flattening bamboo than thecurrent method.

"Using a specially designed machine, the "V-Grooving" method produces v-shapedgrooves/beams on the outer side of a bamboo. Each groove has a lmm grooving "cease" tosustain the bamboo segments and it doublesas hinges when flattened.

"The hinge converts the vertical functionto the sides in order to ensure all beams aresealed tightly to produce a flat sheet.

"Then the final groove/beam is cut until itcomes off and is glued on to the other groove/beam before it is flattened by a pressingmachine," he said at the Putra Cipta pressconference held here.

Dr. Edi said the flattened bamboo can beplaned on a single surface or both surfacesto be applied in PBL manufacturing or asdecorative planks/boards,

Benefits

"Compared to the current practice of splitting-squaring, the "V-Grooving" method is moreconvenient, easy and simple. The PBLcreation process is reduced to half comparedto current methods," he revealed.

Apart from saving production andmaterial costs, this method also produces afinal product of better quality.

"The "V-Grooving" method can bepromoted to small and medium industryentrepreneurs (IKS/SME)and it could benefitthe rural community in terms of generatingnew income," commented Dr Edi.

Advantages

"The scarcity of wood materials is graduallyaffecting Malaysia's wood industry. Bamboo is

therefore seen as a viable alternative to ensurea sufficient supply of "wood" at a competitiveprice in the market.

Bamboo needs only four years to matureand not half a decade as is the case with woodtrees.

According to research, bamboo bladesare more elastic than teak and meranti andthey make a good foundation for buildingmaterials.

Commercial

Meanwhile, Deputy ViceChancellor (Researchand Innovation), Prof. Dato' Ir, Dr.Mohd SalehJaafar said the bamboo industry in Malaysia israpidly growing and there is a bamboo surpluscompared to ordinary wood.

"Bamboo has higher durability thanordinary wood and this adds to its marketvalue. The development of such technologywill certainly add value to bamboo-basedproduction.

"UPMis currently in talks with companiesinvolved directly with the bamboo-basedindustry. Some have shown interest and weplan to market the product sometime thisyear," said Dr. Mohd Saleh jaafar.

Also present at the Putra Cipta pressconference was the Dean of the Faculty ofForestry, Prof. Datin Dr. Faridah HanumIbrahim.

Recognition

The concerted research of Dr. Edi and his teamthat was initiated in 2007 won gold medalrecognition at the recent 2012 "Invention,Research and Innovation Exhibition".Other researchers involved in the venture areAssoc. Prof. Dr. Zaidon Ashaari, Assoc. Prof.Mohd Zin ]usoh, and Dzafarin Saharani, apostgraduate student,

Sembah Ampun Paduka TuankuSEJAIWI berubah, Tuanku. Ketika KebawahDuli Paduka Tuanku membuka negeri telahmerdekalah negeri kita, Tuanku.

Melakalah negeri kita, Tuanku.

Apa pun, Tuanku. Mereka hanyamenduduki Melaka buat semen tarawaktu sahaja. Mereka tidak menjajahnya,Tuanku. Ertinya, Kebawah Duli PadukaTuanku, kalaulah hendak patik ucapkanbahawa sesungguhnya kendati pun Portugismengambil alih pentagbiran dan penguasaanke atas negeri Melaka, negeri Melakatetaplah tidak dijajah mereka. Mereka hanyamendudukinya. ltu pun untuk semen tarasahaja. I

Kebawah Duli Paduka Tuanku." .Syahdan, Inggerislah pula -yang

mengambil peranan mentadbir Melaka.Tuanku, Melaka kemudian dikenali denganseluru emenanjungini dengan nama TanahMelayu. Orang-orang Inggeris pernah jugaIl),cmanggilnya Malaya. Patiklah pernahlahdengar mereka jelas memanggilnya Malaya, manakala rakyat jelata kita menyebutnyadengan nama Tanah Melayu.

Kalaumereka hendak mengangkutnya dengankapal-kapal sehabis besar pun merekaangkutlah kerana mereka sedang menolongmentadbir negeri kita.

"Mamak Bendahara, beta telahberkali-kali mendengar Mamak Bendaharamengatakan mereka menolong mentadbir, ertinya sesungguhnya apa tu wahai MamakBe dahara?" Kebawah Duli Paduka Tuankurnngerutkan dahi sambil memicit -micit dagubaginda, dengan wajah penuh kehairanandan tersangatlah ingin hendak tahu.

Begini Tuanku, memandangkanmereka hanya menduduki negeri kita, danbukan menjajah negeri tanah pusaka kitaini - yang masih kekal merdeka, akakita tidaklah dibolehkan rnenyebut.merekasebagai penjajah. jadi, Tuanku, ampunTuanku beribu-ribu ampun, maka denganitulah patik yang hina ini menggunakanisnlah menolong mentadbir, Tuanku."

"Dijajah tu -bagannana pula, Mamakendahara?"

"La, ingatkan Tuanku dah faham.Rupa-rupanya belum. Panjang ceritanyaKebawall Duli Paduka Tuanku. Kendatipun demikian, bolehlah patik yang hina inimemendekkannya. "

Kalakian, Mamak Bendahara punmenghuraikanJah hal JIll sependek-pendeknya kepada Kebawah Duli PadukaTuanku. Namun, Tuanku masih mengerut-ngerutkan dahinya. Jari jemari bangidanpula mengurut-ngurut dagu baginda.

"Beta masih kurang mengerti wallaiMamak Bendallara."

"Profesor sejarah?

Mamak Bendahariturut bingung.

"Habis tu, mengapa pula benderaUnion Jack diturunkan ketika Tunkumengisytiharkan kemerdekaan tu?"

"Dia orang bergurau je tu, Tuanku."Sampuk Mamak Bendahara penuh yakin.

"Sembah Ampun Tuanku, tiada tercatatsarna sekali."

"Kalau begitu ... ""Buku Sejarah Melayu boleh disemak

"Beta berhak bergundah guiana,Mamak Bendahara.

Ampun

"Hah, sudahlah Mamak Bendahara. SUSall payah beta membukadan membinanya. One more measure taken to provide the journals with greater visibility is theengagement of the Web of ScienceAuthor Connect mailing product, a serviceoffered by Thomson Reuters. The service allows journals to connect withauthors who have published in any journal within the Web of Science network.

Tough Stand on PlagiarismWhile technology has been a boon to researchers in many ways, it hasunfortunately also allowed the spawning of unscrupulous behaviour, the chief of which is plagiarism. This is indeed a crime from which everyacademic who wants to remain credible should steer well away.

Pertanika has always gone to great lengths to ensure zero plagiarism inarticles published in its three journals. Articles submitted to the journalsundergo rigid checks to weed outthe ones that may be guilty of this unethicalpractice, which is in essence one of the worst forms of scientific misconduct.

Authors and researchers are reminded to maintain academic integrityand to keep in mind that plagiarism is not impossible to detect! Whateverform it may be disguised in, whether someone else's work is passed offas one's own, or work copied and paraphrased has not been adequatelycited or findings are claimed as one's own, UPM's Journals Division hasthe necessary system in place to expose plagiarism. ~.~1:2~
