BRIGHTON COLLEGE BANGKOK

Applying to Brighton College Bangkok:A Guide for Applicants

INSPIRATION | INNOVATION | EXCELLENCE

Brighton College is one of the world’s most academically successful schools.

At Brighton College, we seek to impart or provide:

» A love of learning for its own sake » A foundation of knowledge and body of skills with which to understand and question

the world we live in and to prepare us, through an innovative approach to education, for the world we are likely to inhabit in the future

» An awareness of, and appreciation of, the spiritual dimension in our lives » An enthusiasm for the world beyond the classroom - in particular, sport, music and

the performing arts » A respect for difference in others and a recognition that the efforts and achievements

of every individual in our community are valued equally » An awareness of the needs of others, and a firm belief that - whatever our age - we

can make a difference, locally and globally, right now

In short, we strive to turn out well-educated, tolerant and intellectually curious men and women who are ready to take a full, active and positive role in the life of their country and of our world.

BRIGHTON COLLEGE

Brighton College Bangkok opens in September 2016. It will be the third of Brighton College’s sister schools and the first in Asia.

BCB will be an inspirational, innovative and purpose-built school with 21st century learning spaces and world-class facilities laid out across a 20-acre campus in the heart of the Thai capital.

We are seeking inspirational teachers, whose passion for their subject will help our pupils to achieve more than they ever thought possible.

Brighton teachers benefit from being part of the worldwide Brighton College family of schools. Our schools value their reputation for delivering an outstanding education. Our teachers share best practice, benefit from in-house professional development and have opportunities to be mentored for career progression within the Brighton College family of schools: we want our teachers to become our Heads of Departments, Assistant Heads, Deputies and Heads of the future.

BCB teachers will already have British curriculum experience and will be willing and able to make a real difference in a start-up school. The Brighton College family of schools attracts academically able, enthusiastic and innovative educators from around the world. We seek passionate teachers who can inspire their pupils with a love of their subject.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Brighton College is the top co-educational school in England. The Brighton College family of schools are committed to delivering an outstanding British education.

The Brighton College Curriculum will be delivered at Brighton College Bangkok. In the Pre-Prep School, the Early Years Foundation Stage is followed in Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception, and programmes of study for Key Stages 1 and 2 are delivered in Years 1 to 3, including the teaching of Mandarin. In the later stages of the Preparatory School, pupils will undertake an innovative course entitled ‘Story of Our Land’, which will tell the story of Thailand and in doing so combine history, geography, philosophy and religion. Pupils transfer from the Preparatory School to the Senior School at age 13.

IGCSEs are taught in Years 10 and 11, and in Years 12 and 13 pupils undertake A-level study or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Brighton places equal emphasis on a pupil’s intellectual and personal development, and pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities both inside and outside the classroom.

» In 2015, 29 Brighton College pupils were offered places to study at Oxbridge » Exam results of 92.9% A*/A at GCSE and 85.1% A*/A at A-level mean Brighton College

is the top co-educational independent school in the UK

A CURRICULUM FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

We offer all our pupils the opportunity to take part in activities during or after school. Every teacher is responsible for taking part by running an after-school club, coaching a team, or getting involved in another activity, and those with a particular hobby, interest or skill are encouraged to develop new and innovative activities. Our teachers find that clubs can be an enjoyable and informative way to engage with their pupils outside of the classroom.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

At Brighton College we believe it is vitally important for our pupils to leave us with the skills and confidence to make a difference to the society they will be part of and, indeed, responsible for. Our pupils will volunteer with local charities and organisations, using their talents and energy to encourage and serve the local community around the school.

We want Brighton College Bangkok pupils to be a part of society rather than apart from society.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

Brighton College Bangkok will offer its pupils world-class facilities to enable them to explore and develop their skills across the creative and performing arts, including:

» A 600-seat theatre space » A Music School, with ensemble rehearsal space, a recording studio and instrumental

teaching facilities » An Art School, with photography and dark room facilities » Dance and Drama studios » A state-of-the-art Design Technology Centre

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

The Brighton College family of schools has an established reputation for sporting excellence. Pupils both past and present have enjoyed success at the highest level, and many have gone on to represent their country.

Brighton’s philosophy for sport is based on participation and enjoyment. When pupils are involved and happy, they are more likely to achieve their potential, whether as an elite performer aspiring to represent their country, or someone simply wanting to play for their school. For those pupils who do not enjoy team sports, a more recreational-based programme will be available.

Teams will compete on a weekly basis throughout the academic year and represent the College at regional and international sporting events.

SPORT

In the Pre-Prep School, our aim is to ensure that all the children in our care are happy, confident, well-motivated, enthusiastic and excited about their learning.

We will provide an academically challenging learning environment to enable all pupils to realise their potential and to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the next stage of their education in our Preparatory School.

In the Pre-Prep, children progress through and beyond the National Curriculum, beginning with the Early Learning Goals in the Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception classes, moving through to the attainment targets of Key Stage One (in Years 1 and 2) and Two (in Year 3).

We will provide a broad-based curriculum that seeks to develop skills, knowledge and understanding, as well as a curiosity for learning.

Pupils will be grouped according to ability in some subjects to ensure that the pace of learning and teaching style are progressively tailored to suit each child’s particular needs.

Children will be encouraged to participate in an extensive range of extra-curricular activities. They may learn to play one or more musical instruments, be part of a choir or instrumental ensemble, and take part in a wide range of competitive or recreational sports, drama and dance productions.

Our small class sizes will allow us to give each child the individual help he or she needs. Each Pre-Prep class will have a qualified and experienced teacher and a Teaching and Learning Assistant.

PRE-PREP SCHOOL

The Kingdom of Thailand, covering 513,115 square kilometres, has a similar land area to that of France. The country is bordered by Myanmar to the west, Laos and Cambodia to the east and Malaysia to the south. It can be divided into five distinctive areas - the mountainous North, the dry North eastern Plateau, the fertile Central Delta, the Eastern Seaboard and the Southern Peninsula. The capital city of Bangkok is situated in the Central Delta area and is just one metre above sea level.

One of the world’s premier tourist destinations, expats moving to Bangkok will find themselves in a wholly different cultural environment within the familiar framework of an international city. It is a city of contrasts, however, with the glamour of its upscale malls and tourist attractions a seemingly long way off from the grit of its slum areas. Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, its largest city and the centre of business, culture and politics, enjoying significant regional importance in South East Asia. It is also the gateway to some of the world’s most popular tourist resorts.

The King of Thailand is the longest reigning monarch in modern world history. Political upheaval and change have been a feature of life in Thailand for almost a century and are considered a regular feature of life in Bangkok. The cityscape is carved by canals that branch out from the Chao Phraya River, which snakes through the heart of Bangkok. The natural landscape not only shapes the city’s layout but also daily life, which is seen in its floating markets and the cultural customs of its residents. The majority of Bangkok’s expat population moves to the city for its cultural attractions and a cost of living far below that of cities such as London and New York. Bangkok is renowned for its vibrant entertainment scene and the warmth of its residents. It provides opportunities for everyone from young, single expats and expat families to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, without sacrificing on the quality of schools or healthcare facilities, in a diverse and unique city brimming with vitality.
