    APPLIED RESEARCH AT ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGE

    Vision

    At St. Lawrence College, applied research provides opportunities for innovation, enhanced student learningand employability, public and private sector partnerships, technology transfer, and economic development.

    College based applied research develops products or technologies, or innovative processes and services, andalways the enhancement of college curriculum. Applied research includes the scholarship of teaching andteaching applications such as clinical or workplace practice.

    A range of applied research has commenced at the college including technology design and development withindustry partners, an internal seed program to support faculty interest, pursuit of external grants, and thedevelopment of policy infrastructure to support institutional eligibility for relevant granting councils.     Proposing Applied Research

    Prospective applied researchers are encuraged to discuss their ideas with their supervisor in advance ofsubmission and to submit their application to their supervisor who will convey it to Research & Planning withtheir signature or e-mail indicating awareness and support.

    Guidelines

    A-LIMITATIONS

    (1) The Principal Investigator (lead researcher) must be a full-time, partial-load, or regular part-timeemployee of St. Lawrence College.

    (2) The Principal Investigator must acquaint themselves with research-related policies located on thecolleges Intranet site at:http://intranet.sl.on.ca/InstitResearch_Policies.htm(3) Proposals must have viable outcomes, timelines, human and other resources, and funding.(4) Proposals must indicate adequate resources have been arranged to complete the project.(5) Proposals typically involve college students and community partners.(6) Proposals typically anticipate next steps of further, expanded research.(7) St. Lawrence College asserts ownership of intellectual property created through the use of any college

    resources, thereby preventing miscellaneous and encumbering claims to intellectual property. Thecollege assigns intellectual property ownership and rights to Principal Investigators or other researchpartners on request, in connection with project commencement.

    (8) Proposals require review and approval by School or Campus Deans or Associate Deans to beadministered by Research & Planning. Administration of all applied research activity by Research &Planning is required in order to respect auditing requirements of the Natural Science and EngineeringResearch Council of Canada (NSERC) and other national agencies.

    (9) Hardware, software and any other supporting resources acquired for the project will remain theproperty of St. Lawrence College.

    (10) Proposals approved by a Dean or Associate Dean which involve research with human subjects willrequire final review and approval by the colleges Research Ethics Board. Research & Planning canassist researchers with all relevant processes.

    Questions to be considered in planning applied research include:

    1. Does this solve a practical problem? Is there a practical application?2. Does it create new, innovative processes, technologies or services?

    3. Does the proposal include a sound methodology?4. Are project outcomes identified?5. Is the evaluation method sound and appropriate?6. What is the student involvement in the project?7. What is the external or community involvement?8. What human resources, equipment, spaces are required?9. What stakeholders might share resources?10. What are the costs of the resources?11. Have ethical issues been considered?

    6. Are there potential areas of ethical concern? If so, how will you address them? Projects involvingresearch with human subjects will require review and approval by the colleges Research Ethics

    Board. Research & Planning will assist with this process.

    Examples: Using students or other people as subjects, using student projects as basis for future work,informed consent, confidentiality, payment of consideration, risk for participants.

    7. What resources do you need to complete this research project? Include any teaching oradministrative off-load as well as equipment required. Please attach a detailed budget for thisproject.

    Note: Projects typically fund a single course offload for a faculty researcher for a term or two plus certainstudent assistants and modest equipment or supplies. An external partner typically furnishes in-kind supportwith certain expert staff time or equipment, and sometimes a cash contribution usually in support of studentassistants.
