ApplicationDescriptionTestingthecablesofawindorsolarfarmhasbecomeroutine.Itusuallyinvolvestesting35kVcablesystemswithaVeryLowFrequency(VLF) AC hipot to performACWithstand testing and sometimes diagnostic testing, likeTangentDeltameasurement and/orPartialDischarge detection. (If the reader is unfamiliar with VLF technology, read the Cable Testing – ACWithstand and Cable Testing –DiagnosticMethodsApplications.)Thesetestsusuallyusinga0.1HzVLFAChipot,not50/60Hz,asthevoltagesourcetoovercomethehighcapacitanceofthelongcableruns,sometimesupto10uF.EvenusingVLFtechnologyat0.1Hzor0.05Hzratherthan50/60Hzissometimesproblematicasthecablelengthsareoftentoolongtotestduetotheirhighcapacitance.
Comments:Thisapplicationisstraightforward,butforonefrequentproblem.Oftenthecablerunsareverylongwithoutaccessiblespliceboxesorotheraccesspoints.Thedesignofthecablesystemsisoftendonewithlittleconsiderationforthetestingandfaultlocatingthatwillbenecessary.Also,itiscommonthatthepeoplewhodesignthesystemwithcablelengthsof5or10milesspecifyPartialDischargeorTanDeltatesting.Thesetestscannotbeeffectivelydoneoncablelengthsinexcessof~2miles.Furthercomplicatingthetestingandfaultlocatingisthattheneutralsarecrossbondedtominimizevoltagedropandtherelatedthermalproblems,butwithnoaccesstotheburiedlinkageboxes.Thismethodofdesign,driveninlargeparttokeepcostsdown,needstochange.
ThemostcommontestistheVLFACWithstandtest.Thisisapass/failovervoltagestresstestperformedtoinsurethatthecableinsulation,attachedaccessories, and the terminations are all sound with no damage frominstallationerrorsorfactorymaterialdefects.Sincethewholesystemisnew,itcanbeassumedthatallcomponentsarehealthyexceptforthosethatwerenotinstalledcorrectlyordamagedduringinstallation.Ifthereisadefectivespliceor cut in the cable, the test voltage level and the testdurationaredesigned to cause the defect to fail during the test, while not adverselyaffectingtherestofthehealthycableinstallation.
UsuallytheIEEE400.2-2012StandardforVLFandTanDeltaCabletestingisreferenced.ThisstandarddictatesthatforAcceptancetestingcableratedfor35kVac,apeaksinusoidalVLFvoltageof62kVacbeappliedfor30–60minutes.Basedontheknownelectrical treegrowthrateundertheseVLFvoltage conditions, any defect severe enough to be driven into a partialdischargeconditionwillhaveenoughtimetogrowandpenetratethroughtheinsulation,causingafailure.Findthefault,fixit,andretest.
Diagnostic testing isoftenperformed,especiallyonolder installations, tolearnofthecablesinsulationhealthbutwithouttheriskofapossiblefailurethataWithstandtestposes.Thetwocommonlyperformedtestsareslightovervoltagetestsofshortdurationthatareusefulintheirownwaysbutprovideverydifferentdatasets.ATanδ(Delta)testmeasuresthedegreeofinsulationdeteriorationovertheentirecablelength.Thisoffersanexcellentwayofcomparingmanycablestohelpprioritizeinjection/rejuvenation,replacement,orothertestingmethodsthatmaybebeneficial.APartialDischargetestattemptstolocatespecificplacesoftroublesomeelectricaldischargesandtheirseverity.Bothofthesetestsarelimitedtoperhaps2milesor3-4km.
