`Functional finishes are applied to cover the inherent weaknesses of the fabrics,

    especially for cotton and polyester.

    POLYESTER

    v MERITS:

    Low cost.

    Excellent shine and drape .

    Strength: twice that of cotton.

Low deformation: No sags and bends.

    Excellent crease recovery property.

    Formal look.

    v DEMERITS:

Hydrophobic due to low moisture regain.High static charge generated resulting in poor wear comfort.

    Attracts dust particles and stains.

Difficult to clean (Poor soil release).

Strong tendency to pill during abrasive wash process.

Easily blended with other man made and natural fibers.

    INSISTENCE ON VALUE FOR MONEY

    Consumer is the king.

    Value for money concept.

Markets looking for constant change in the product mix.

The normal life cycle of cotton, which was only up to finished fabric, in the

early 1960s, is now extended to branded and specialty products.

    FUNCTIONAL FINISHES

1: Encapsulated finishesThis absorbs the sweat frequently and while washing it is

cleaned and ready for the next action.

    2: Smart textiles

Smart textiles are materials and structures thatare sensitive and react to environmentalconditions such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, thermal magnetic or other senses.

4: Moisture managementIt can absorb the water, sweat, etc., from outer

source and evaporates the moisture in the atmosphere.

6: Non IroningUsing strong starches on fabrics we can also

    produce non- ironing fabrics.

7:Water proof finishThese finishes are given to the fabrics

    to have resistance from water.

    8: Softening

These finishes are given to the fabrics to makeit more softer.

    1. Anti microbialMicrobes are minute organisms, but can

be most dangerous for creating harm toour lifestyle in different ways.

    2. Aroma Therapy Fragma series/Moisturizers/ Essential oils/ Aloe VeraAromatherapy includes blends of various

fragrances like, Musk, Pineapple, Rose, Lavender,Jasmine, Lemon, Peppermint etc., which are applied on thefabric with the help of a binder.

    3. Antistatic Finish

Static electricity is created when two non-conducting surfaces, such as synthetic

    textiles, rub together.

    5.Flame Retardant Finish

Flame retardants are chemicals, which are added to combustible materials to renderthem more resistant to ignition. They are designedto minimize the risk of a fire starting in case of

contact with a small heat source such as cigarette, candle or an electrical fault.

    CONCLUSION

As with all emerging technologies, a

successful future for Functional FinishedTextiles will only be achieved through opensharing of ideas and research findings.
