APPLICATIONS OF CAST IRON

COOKWARE:

Cookware, such as skillets, pots and pans, is one of the common uses of cast iron. Once the

cookware is cured, it seals in the seasoning of the foods cooked in them and even adds iron

to the diet. Cast iron's ability to withstand and maintain very high cooking temperatures

makes it a common choice for searing or frying, and its excellent heat diffusion and

retention makes it a good option for long-cooking stews or braised dishes. Because cast iron

skillets can develop a "non-stick" surface, they are also a good choice for egg dishes,

particularly scrambled eggs. Other uses of cast iron pans include baking, for instance for

making cornbread, cobblers and cakes.

BARBECUE GRILLS:

Welded barbecue grills use heavy cast-iron materials and stainless steel. Larger models of

these grills are often so heavy that two people have to carry them.Cast Iron gives off a more

even heat and holds it far longer than steel, aluminium or porcelain; delivering constant

heat means better taste. A strong & resilient grill. Our grates withstand higher

temperatures than normal grates. Like any other good Cast Iron product, it will last a

lifetime if cared for properly.

CONSTRUCTION:

Industrial and residential construction used cast iron on buildings, especially for beams and

posts that hold up architectural structures. Cast iron is also used in pipe plumbing.Cast ironhas been used for centuries, and was used in architecture, like in the construction of East

Asian pagodas, in the pre-modern period. It was in 18th century Britain that new production

methods first allowed cast iron to be produced cheaply enough and in large enough

quantities to regularly be used in large building projects. One of the first important projects

was The Iron Bridge in Shropshire, a precedent setting structure made almost entirely of

cast iron. However, it was grossly over-designed, and the makers (principally Abraham

Darby) suffered financially as a result. The quality of the iron used in the bridge is not high,

and nearly 80 brittle cracks are visible in the present structure.BRIDGES:

In the late 1700s, bridges constructed in Europe and the United States used cast iron as

their primary building material.In the early eighteenth century, the only way to cross the

Severn Gorge was by ferry. However, the industries that were growing in the area of

Coalbrookdale and Broseley needed a more reliable crossing.

In 1773, Thomas Farnolls Pritchard wrote to a local ironmaster, John Wilkinson of Broseley,

to suggest building a bridge out of cast iron. By 1775, Pritchard had finalised the plans, but

he died in December 1777, only a month after work had begun.Abraham Darby III, who was

the grandson of the first foundry owner and an ironmaster working at Coalbrookdale in the

gorge, was commissioned to cast and build the bridge. The iron for the new bridge was cast

at his foundry.

ORDNANCE:

Shrapnel shells were anti-personnel artillery munitions which carried a large number of

individual bullets close to the target and then ejected them to allow them to continue along

the shell's trajectory and strike the target individually. They relied almost entirely on the

shell's velocity for their lethality. The munition has been obsolete since the end of WorldWar I for anti-personnel use, when it was superseded by high-explosive shells for that role.

PIPING:

Cast iron pipe is a pipe which has had historic use as a pressure pipe for transmission of

water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe during the 19th and 20th centuries. It

comprises predominantly a gray cast iron tube and was frequently used uncoated, although

later coatings and linings reduced corrosion and improve hydraulics. Cast iron pipe was

superseded by ductile iron pipe, which is a direct development, with most existing

manufacturing plants transitioning to the new material during the 1970s and 1980s. Little

cast iron pipe is currently manufactured.
