The University

• Funded in 1531 by Emperor Charles V• Over 80k students distributed in various

campuses across the city• Over 2k European Students via the

Erasmus Programme, making it the top destination

• Voted best university in Spain in the International Student Satisfaction Awards

• Third university in Spain according to the Shanghai ranking

The faculty of Sciences, home to our group, is located just a short walk from

the historic centre of Granada

B. Zamorano - Application to join DUNE 4

The University

• We are part of the Department of Theoretical Physics and Cosmology- The area of Theoretical Physics has 30 members: 6 Professors, 9 lecturers, 5 postdocs,

9 students and 1 engineer• Ranked as 1st scientific research group in Andalucía during 2017 in the “Strengthening

programme”

Experience hosting very large scientific events (CERN European

strategy symposium this May)

B. Zamorano - Application to join DUNE 5

The group

• The experimental neutrino group currently consists of 3 members

• Prof. Antonio Bueno (PI and IB rep.)• Dr. Diego García-Gámez• Dr. Bruno Zamorano

Prof. Antonio Bueno• NOMAD and ICARUS in the 90s• Co-Spokesman of the Pierre Auger Observatory 2013-2017• 61 papers in LArTPCs and neutrino physics (173 total)• 8 Supervised PhD theses

The group before the

10 year challenge

B. Zamorano - Application to join DUNE 6

The group

Dr. Bruno Zamorano• PhD in the Pierre Auger Observatory in 2014• Joined NOvA and DUNE 2014 at the University of Sussex• Lead analyser in NOvA numu analysis 2015-2017• Production & computing convener, followed by calibration

convener in NOvA

Dr. Diego García-Gámez• PhD in the Pierre Auger Observatory in 2010• Joined SBND and DUNE in 2015 at the University of

Manchester• Leader of the light detection task of the joint SBN

collaboration

B. Zamorano - Application to join DUNE 7

The project

• Join the Spanish efforts, particularly simulation and reconstruction of the light system (in coordination with CIEMAT)

• Given our previous experience in reconstruction and Machine Learning, we’re interested in the 3D reconstruction of neutrino events

• Particularly keen to explore the potential of including light-collection information into the reconstruction

• Particle ID• Energy reconstruction

• We expect to contribute with 1 FTE distributed across the 3 members• Increased once we incorporate students to the group

• Funding for DUNE is requested together with other Spanish institutions as part of a joint proposal in Autumn 2019

B. Zamorano - Application to join DUNE 8

The project

• Ongoing effort re-commissioning a HEP lab for small-scale projects (photon detector characterisation, cryogenics, control system development…)

• In addition, we own a Grid node with 250 virtual CPUs and a disk storage server with 70 TBs disk space

• This was used in 2011 as part of the Auger Grid VO, and we could potentially join the FermiGrid with some support if there’s interest

We look forward to

joining DUNE!
