RADIOWASTE DISPOSAL PROGRAMLUFKIN MEDICAL LABORATORIES

The RIA oreration makes use exclusively of short livednuclides (I-125 and Co-57). All tests involve aaueous, soluble

s u r er na ta n t s. The route chosen for disrosal it, therefore, thesanitary sewer system for the majority of activity and s t ora s e forradio-decay to handle the remainder No commercial ra di owa s t edisrosal service is used. _

After tests are comrleted, the rlastic tubes aredecanted imm e di a t ely into desisnated sinks The empty tubes arethen rinsed in water and " v or t e::: e d " to loosen and solublireremainins protein on walls. The tubes are rinsed esain anddissarded as non-radioactive refuse. Experimental determinationof activity after the washins erocess i ndi cates remai ni ns activi tyin tubes is equivalent to that found after 4 half-lives (8 months)

or more of stor ase of unwashed tubes.|

Disrosable rirettes, and other solid items contaminated

are bassed, labelled, da te d and ctored for decay a minimum of

three months. These sealed bass may be released to normal refuse| if no activity above backsround can be found usins a sensitive,

| thi n window survey instrument. Radiation labels are removed rrior| to release from storase. A record of bass removed from storase is| maintained for inspection.|

B. SURVEY PROCEDURES FOR RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION:

| The RIA area work surfaces and retriserator areto be surveyed for surface contamination in two ways.

Throushout the day, the technician is requested tomoni t or bench surfaces and clean if necessary. Once aweek, a readi rs usins standard technique will be taken at

each of several locations in the RIA area and a record ofthese values will be kert for N.R.C. insrection. Once amonth alcohol moistened wires of these locations willalso be taken and counted in the well counter slons withthe standard source of I-129 these values will beconverted to uCi and recorded in a los.

C. MOVEMENT OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS WITHIN THE BUILDING

Ra di oa c tiv e shirments are to be brousht to theRIA area as received. Without authorization from Mr.Coorer or the Radiati on Safety Officer ( J. Gi san ti ) nora di oa c tive material s may be brousht out of the area for
