TheMYSTY - MyStory: Digital Storytelling Toolbox for Diversity Training in Schools projectprovides tools for teachers to share and embed innovative teaching practice to enhanceawarenessofculturaldiversity.Atthesametime it increasespupils’culturalawarenessandexpressionandenhancetheirsocialandciviccompetences.MYSTYalsosupportsteachers’andpupils’digitalcompetences.MYSTY involves thecollection, theeditingandtheuploadingofdigitalstoriestotheMYSTYDigitalStorytellingToolboxwebsite.Thesestoriesfocuson‘food’,‘family’and‘festival’andactasaplatformfordiversityawarenessanddigitalupskilling.
Ourinternationalprojectincludes8organizationsfromfourEUcountries:Austria,UK,HungaryandItaly.OneofMSYTY’smainaimsistheenhancementofschools’culturalactivity,raising(inter)culturalawarenessandthe introductionofthethinkingaboutdiversity.Andourmaintoolsaredigitalstories,themethodsandtechniquesofdigitalstorytelling.
MYSTYisatwo-years-longprojectwiththeideaofgivingchildrencomplextoolsandencouragethemtotellustheirstoriesaboutfood,familyandfestivals.Ourgoalistogivethem(andtheirteachers,youthworkers)atool,anddeveloptrainingmaterialswhichwillhelpthemachievinggreatercompetenceinculturalandinterculturalawareness,civics,digitalupscalingandinthefieldofcriticalthinking.Wearealsodevelopingcoursematerials,hand-to-handwithourpupilstohelpdisadvantagedchildrentellingtheirstoriestoo.
ThecurrentcontextofrapidmigrationintoEuropeassociatedwiththeinternationaltensions,have revealed growing distances between different cultures and communities, including ineducationalsetting,andinvolvingintolerantattitudesandbehaviours.Inordertohelpchildrenand young people become responsible, open-minded members of our diverse societytheMYSTY Project provides ameans for teachers to share and embed innovative teachingpracticetoenhanceawarenessofculturaldiversity.TheParisDeclaration2015,acknowledgesthemajor roleofeducation inpromoting inclusionandownershipofEurope’s fundamentalvalues and digital storytelling is a simple yet very effective means of fostering diversityawarenessandinterculturalcompetenciesinbothpupilsandteachers.Usingdigitalstorytellinginpeertopeerlearningscenariosintheclassroomenablesstudentsandteacherstoengagewithpoliticallycurrentandpressingissuesinwaysthatareengagingandinclusive,whilstalsodynamicandinstructional.

MYSTYindifferentcontexts
Everyonehasastorytotellandtellingthemacrosslocationsenablesanunderstandingofthecomplexinterplayofcommonalityanddifference.MYSTYhasshownhowthemethodofdigitalstorytellinghasenabledyoungpeopletovoicepersonalstoriesthatwouldnotbearticulatedotherwise. It has also allowed teachers to get to know their pupils through the sharing ofnarrativesnotusuallyairedintheclassroom.
UpskillingstudentsandteachersbysupportivedigitalandcreativeeducationtechniquesandallowingasharingspacemeansthattheMYSTYmethodcanbeusedelsewhere,withdifferentparticipants.Withthisinmind,theUniversityofGloucestershireisnowworkingonaprojectinvolvinglocalarmedserviceveteransonadigitalstorytellingprojectcalled‘AcrosstheAges’.IncollaborationwithAgeUK(Gloucestershire)studentswillbeworkingwiththeveteransovera period of 2 years, to produce 3-5-minute audio-visual stories that will be archived on adedicatedwebsite. Theveteranswilltellandrecordsstoriesabouttheirtimeinserviceandtheir life after service. The aim of the project is to offer amodel of life-long learning andopportunity for theveterans,building theirself-esteemandgiving themacreativeplatformwheretheopportunityforsharingmemoriesandpersonalexperiencescanbefacilitated.
Digitalstorytellingallowspersonalstoriestobeshared,itoffersaglimpseintothelivesofothersanditallowsthosewhosevoicesmayneverbeheardotherwise,tobethenarratorsoftheirownstories.Itisapowerfultoolforuseineducation,therapyandinsocialcare.

AtStEdwardsSchoolwehavebeenworkingtocreateDigitalStorieswith12-14yearoldschoolpupilsinCheltenham,UK.
Fromtheoutsettheprojecthashadastrongextra-curriculartheme,thestaffworkingonthestorieshavebeenHumanities,ICTandArtspecialistssowehaveincorporatedDSworkintothefabricofourlessons.
TheoutcomessupporttheideathatDShasawiderangeofapplications.ThebriefwastocreatestoriesthatwouldinvestigateDiversityaroundthethemesofFamily,FoodandFestivals.Manychildren interpreted thisbrief very looselyand created stories thatwere intenselypersonalaboutlifechallenges,holidays,familyandfriendship.Keyissuesthatemergedfromthestoriesandthepupilsthemselveswere;
Ø Theyoungerpupilswerethemosthonestandcreatedtheleastcontrivedandmostrevealingstories.Attimestheyweretoopersonalandsomehavebeenwithdrawn.
Ø The14yearoldswereveryconcernedabouthowthestorieswouldbepresentedtotheirpeersandthemostself-consciousabouttheuseoftheirvoices.
Ø Thelowestabilitypupilsgainedahugeamountfromtheprojectandengagedwithitinthemostenthusiasmduetothelowwrittencontent.Thisallowedthemtocompeteonamorelevelplayingfieldwiththeirmoreablepeers.Manyoftheirstorieswereparticularlydramaticandentertaining.Wefeel thatDSareavery learningvaluabletoolforchildrenwithSpecialEducationalNeedsandcouldbewidelyusedasanon-written medium for engaging these children through Learning Support in theeducationsystem.
Ø Some pupils told personal stories about overcoming challenges such as grief andadoption. Theywere able to reflect on these issues andmakedecisionswith theirparentsaboutwhattoshareandwhattokeepprivate.DSwouldhaveaveryusefulapplicationinthewiderfieldsofpupilcounselling,safeguardingandasadiscussionpointforgrief/trauma/anxiety/stress/selfesteembuildingandgeneralpsychologicalsupport.InamoreprivateforumDScouldhaveenormousbenefittoagenerationofyoungpeoplewhoseemincreasinglytroubled.
