    Thank you for applying to our medical school for this coming year. We have anoutstanding program, and are pleased that you are considering becoming a part ofit. While each medical school in Canada is unique in its own way, ours is the onlythree year, clinical presentations based program in North America.Please take the time to explore the facultys webpages where you will find a wealth

    of information about the curriculum, the school and some important outcome

    measures (residency match results, etc.). We will also have more informationavailable for you at the time of interviews.As many of you know, our entering first year class this year was 170 students, andwe do not anticipate any further increases for this coming year. I am a graduate ofthis program myself, having graduated in 1998. Despite the dramatic growth inclass size since then, I am continually struck by the degree of collegiality and

    cohesion evident within such a large group of people. It may be result of our non-competitive pass-fail system, or it may simply be a function of the outstanding young

    men and women who make up our medical school classes. Regardless the reason,it is doubtless part of the reason that the medical school experience here at the U of

    C is as much fun as it is hard work.

    2.2MCATYoumusthavewrittentheMedicalCollegeAdmissionTest

    (MCAT)bythefallofyearofapplication.WerequirethatyourscoresbeavailableforreleasetouspriortotheapplicationdeadlineofOct15,2011.Forthiscomingyear,thismeansthatthelasteligibleMCATsittingwouldbeonSept10th,2011.WewillacceptMCATscoresfromasfarbackas1991.

    2.3MinimumFull-TimeAcademicYearsYoumusthavecompleted,bythetimeofapplication,twofulltimeyearsofuniversityeducationatanAUCC-recognizedwww.aucc.cainstitutionorequivalentinternationaluniversity.Inorderforanacademicyeartobeconsideredfulltime,werequirethatyouhavecompleted24creditsforwhichagradehasbeenrecordedoveraconsecutiveperiodof8months,

    usuallySept-April.

    2.4MinimumGPAGPAiscalculatedusingonlyfulltimeundergraduateyears.ThoseapplicantswhohavemorethantwofulltimeyearsatthetimeofapplicationandwhohavealreadyorwillbegraduatingfromtheirundergraduatedegreeinthecurrentacademicyearwillhavetheirworstacademicyeardroppedfromtheirGPAcalculation.Inthecaseofco-opstudies,wewillcalculateanoverallgpabasedonfull-timeyears(atleast24creditsSept-April)aswellasonfull-timesemesters(atleast12credits),aslongasactualgradesareassignedforallofthesecredits.Iftheapplicantisinthe\inalyearoftheirundergraduatedegreeorbeyond,wewilleliminateeithertheworstfull-timeyearortheworstsemester.

    AgrademustbeenteredintoUCANforallUniversitylevelcoursestaken.Thisachievesseveralgoals.Mostimportantly,itallowsUCANtoaccuratelycalculateyourGPAforthepurposesoftheapplication.Ialsoallowsthe\ilereviewertoreviewonasinglescreenthesumtotalofyouracademicresults.

    Eventhoughwedonotusesummercoursesandpart-timeyearsinthecalculationofGPA,westillneedthemtobeenteredintoUCAN.Failuretodosocanresultintheterminationoftheapplication.Gradesshouldbeenteredasfoundonthetranscript.Ifyourtranscriptshowsbothletterandpercentagegrades,thepercentagegradeshouldbeentered.

    3.4MCAT

    3.5LettersofReference

    Applicantsarerequiredtosubmitthenamesandcontactinformationofthreerefereesinsupportoftheirapplications.Aspartofthisprocess,applicantswilldirectUCANtosendtherefereealinktothereferenceletterform.

    Althoughmanyofthequestionsaskedofrefereesarecommontoallthreeforms,eachofthethreeformsisunique,andattemptsspeci\icallytoobtaininformationhelpfultotheassessmentofoneparticularattributeoftheapplicant(Seesection4.2below).Therefore,applicantsshouldchooserefereescarefully,keepinginmindtheabilityoftherefereetocommentspeci\icallyontheattributeinquestion.

    UCANwilldisplayinrealtimeonceareferencehasbeencomplete.Itremainstheapplicantsresponsibilitytoensurethatthereferencesarecomplete.NoextensionstothedeadlineofOct15thwillbegrantedforthecompletionofreferences.Ifarefereesbelievesthattheyhavecompletedareference,butitdoesnotshowasreceivedintheapplicantsUCANstatuspage,therefereeshouldbeadvisedtocontacttheOf\iceofAdmissionsdirectly.Intheeventthatanapplicantwishestochangehisorherreferences,thiscanbedonesimplybydeactivatingthereferenceinUCANandselectinganewrecipient.Itisnotpossibletohavemorethanoneactivereferenceofeachtype,however,andoncemadeinactive,areferencecannotbere-activated.

    Applicantsarerequestedtolistallacademicpublicationsaspartoftheapplicationprocess.Thismayincludeoralandposterpresentationsaslongastheabstracthasbeenpublishedintheconferenceproceedings.Applicantsmayalsoincludepublishedproseorpoetry,butnotarticleswrittenforstudentnewspapers,newslettersorbrochures.Theselatterpublicationsmaybeincludedinthe30activitiesiftheyaredeemedsuf\icientlyimportantbytheapplicant.

    3.8Fees

    Allfeesandpaymentsarenon-refundable.Afeeof$150.00ischargedwhereby$100.00ofthefeegoestotheUniversityand$50.00remainsintheOf\iceofAdmissionsforupkeepoftheonlineapplicationsystem.PaymentisacceptedbycreditcardONLY.(FacultyofMedicineUofCwillappearonyourstatement.)TheFacultyofMedicineacceptsMasterCardandVISAforthepaymentofapplicationfees.Pleaseensureyouhavechosenthecreditcardpaymentoptionandreviewyourcreditcardnumberandexpirydatebeforesubmittingpayment.Ifyourcardisdeclinedorinvalid,yourapplicationwillnotbeprocessed.

    AllAlbertanapplicantswhomeettheminimumcriteriatoapply(seesection2)undergofull\ilereview.NonAlbertanapplicantswillinitiallyberankedusingthefollowingformula:

    4.2ScoringSystem

    Each\ileisindependentlyevaluatedby3or4membersoftheadmissionscommittee,includingatleastonefacultymember,onetrainee(studentorresident)andonecommunitymember.Theentire\ileisreviewedinaholisticmanner,withscoresassignedforevidenceofattributeswhichtheMDprogramhaspreviouslyidenti\iedasconsistentwiththeterminalobjectivesoftheprogram.Assuch,therearenodiscretescores

    assignedforextracurricularactivitiesorlettersofreference,althoughtheseitemsinformthescoringinmultipleareas.Scoresareassignedinthefollowingareas:Academicability40%(consistingofGPA,MCATVRandsubjectiveassessmentofacademics),and10%foreachofthefollowing:

    4.2.1GPA(20%)

    GPAiscalculatedinthesamewayasdescribedinsection2.4.GPAiscalculatedusingonlyfulltimeundergraduateyears.Thoseapplicantswhohavemorethantwofull-timeyearsatthetimeofapplicationandwhohavealreadyorwillbegraduatingfromtheirundergraduatedegreeinthecurrentacademicyearwillhavetheirworstacademicyeardroppedfromtheirGPAcalculation.ApplicantswithacompletedgraduatedegreewillhavetheiroverallGPAfromtheirgraduateprogramusedasequivalenttooneyearofundergraduateGPAforthepurposesofthiscalculation.Intheeventthatanapplicanthasmultipleyearswithgradedcourseswithintheirgraduateprogram,thegraduatedegreeGPAwillbecalculatedusingtheweightsoftheindividualcourses.

    Part-timestudiesaswellasspring/summercoursesarenotusedinthiscalculation.

    4.2.2MCATVR(10%)

    AlthoughapplicantswillreportallsectionsoftheMCAT,onlytheVRsectionwillbeusedintheobjectivecalculationofapplicationscores.IftheMCAThasbeenwrittenmorethanonce,theapplicantmustchooseonesetofscorestouseforthepurposesofapplication.Ingeneral,thisshouldbetheonewiththehighestVRscore.

    4.2.3SubjectiveAssessmentofAcademicMerit(10%)

    Eachassessorassignsascorecorrespondingtohisorhersubjectiveassessmentoftheacademicstrengthoftheentireacademicrecord.Thisincludes,butisnotlimitedto,suchthingsasthetypesofcoursestaken,trendsingradesovertime,extenuatingcircumstances,consistencyandsubjectivereviewoftheentireMCATscore(VR,BS,PSandWS).Theoverarchingquestionthatthereviewerisaskedtoansweris,Towhatextentdoesthisapplicantdemonstrateevidenceofthe

    academicskillnecessarytomasterthematerialwithintheMDcurriculum?

    4.2.4EvidenceofSpeci\iedNon-CognitiveAttributes(10%each)

    Thequestionposedtoassessorsis,Towhatdegreedoesthisapplicantdemonstrateevidenceof[attributeX]?Inordertoanswerthatquestion,assessorsdrawinformationfromtheapplicationitselfaswellasfromthelettersofreference.Assessorswillconsiderthelifehistoryandactivities/experiencesofanapplicantinsofarastheydemonstrateeitheropennesstowardsorpro\iciencyintheskillsandattributesinquestion.Itisimportantforapplicantstonote

    thatoneofthereasonsforadoptinganattributes-basedassessmenttoolwastherecognitionthatthesameattributescanbemanifestinmanydifferentways,someofwhichappearsuper\iciallymoreimpressive,butmaynotactuallyprovideevidenceofgreaterlikelihoodofsuccesswithinmedicalschool.UsingAbilitytoworkinteamsasanexample,thismightbemanifestjustasmuchbyhavingworkedasapart-timeshortordercookasbyhavingbeenonasportsteamwhileinuniversity.Applicantsarethereforeencouragedtothinkcarefullyandcriticallyabouttheirownexperiencesandtohighlightthosethingswhichdemonstratethoseabilitiesessentialtothepracticeofmedicine,ratherthantosimplycompilealistoftheirgreatestaccomplishments.

    4.3StandardizedScoring

    Appendix2TechnicalStandards

    In 1996, the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges (ACMC), after consultation with the Canadian medicaschools, developed a draftpolicyon the technicalstandards foradmissiontomedical schoolfor studentswithdisabilities. The rationale forthis policywasnotto preclude studentswith disabilitiesfrom consideration for

    admission, but rather, an acknowledgement that in order to ful\ill the requirementsof the MD degree, everymedical student must exercise certain skills and abilities. The draft document, based on similar standardsdeveloped by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), identi\ied certain skills in observationcommunication,motor,intellectual,behavioural,andsocialrealmsthatarerequiredfortheMDdegree.InSpring2000, further consultation among the members of the ACMC Committee on Admissions and Student Affairsresultedinminormodi\icationsoftheoriginaldraftandproducedthefollowingrecommendations.

    These standardsare recommendedguidelines. Theyrecognize the factthatmedicaleducation takesplace inavarietyofsettingsandutilizesmanydifferentmodalitiesforteaching andassessment. In addition, thestandardsacknowledge the fact thatmedical studentsare oftenencouraged tobe interactive learnersand toapply theirknowledge inclinicalsettings. In choosingtoutilizeallorpartof theguidelines,eachmedicalschoolshouldbefamiliarwiththeappropriate provincialand federallegislationpertainingtopersonswithdisabilitiesandmakemodi\icationsaccordingly.

    Thetechnicalstandardsincludethefollowingskills:

    Observation: The candidate must be able to observe demonstrations and experiments in the basic sciencesincluding physiologic and pharmacologic demonstrations in animals, microbiologic cultures, and microscopicpreparations of micro-organisms and tissues. A candidate must be able to accurately observe a patient at adistance and close at hand. Observation includes functional use of the senses of vision and other sensorymodalities.Communication:Acandidatemusthavethecapabilitytobeabletospeak,hear,andobservepatientsinordertoelicit information, describe changes in mood, activity, posture, and perceive non-verbal communications. Acandidate must be able to communicate well with patients.
