Shine as lights in the world

Welcome from the Headteacher Hello

I am the current Headteacher of Pulham Primary School, thank you for your interest in our amazing

school.

I have been Headteacher here for seven years and during that time the staff team and I have worked

tirelessly to make this school the best it can be. The school is home to children from both Pulham Market

and Pulham St Mary as well as to children coming from further afield. The school has a reputation as a

nurturing, school where children don’t just learn, they thrive.

We have a strong Christian vision – Shine as Lights in the World – and believe in the uniqueness of every

child. We have developed a growth mindset in the school and children know that we learn from our

mistakes. They take ownership of their own learning and have a thirst for knowledge and a positive

enthusiasm for every opportunity they are offered. The children here are naturally curious about the

world around them and we have considered how to broaden our curriculum to include learning about

global issues. Recently the Hummingbirds Class have been learning about the Rainforest and decided

they wanted to raise money to support a charity that helps to protect that unique eco-system. Children

here have empathy for others and want to help to make a difference to their community and to charities

both nationally and globally.

We believe in giving children a voice through whole school circle times – circles consist of children form

Reception upwards and the Year 6 pupils run the circles, sharing news with the other children and

discussing whole school issues and coming up with ideas about how to improve and develop the school.

Our Year 6 pupils are Ambassadors for the school and wear red jumpers and shirts to show that they

have reached the top of the school. They are a credit to the school and are positive role models for the

other pupils to emulate. All of our pupils have positive behaviours for learning inside school and, when

on school trips, we have received many compliments about the way our pupils conduct themselves.

The outside environment is very important to us, we have a beautiful meadow as part of our school

grounds, with our own Iceni Round House and Outdoor Learning Centre. Learning outside is an integral

part of our curriculum and allows all children to flourish.

This is a very special school, with a very caring and inspiring ethos, we never place a ceiling on pupil’s

learning and we give them daily opportunities to surprise themselves and us with their skills, knowledge

and thoughtfulness to others. The staff here are a real team, they work together and support each other

consistently. The work they do to provide a first-class education to every child is exemplary. They are

caring and joyful and have wonderful senses of humour.

I hope you will take the opportunity to visit the school and see for yourself what makes this school such a

remarkable place to work.

Kind regards,

Simone Goddard Head Teacher

Letter from the staff Dear future Headteacher

We at Pulham have had the amazing privilege to be part of a team of staff who have upheld a dream

started by our current Headteacher. This dream was to create an extraordinary, forward thinking school

where ‘Creative learning without limits’ would be our whole school philosophy. We are proud of what

we have achieved, and we are looking for an exceptional Headteacher to carry us forward on our

journey.

Our new Headteacher will value the learning of the whole child by embracing the Arts and foundation

subjects whilst also maintaining high standards in the core subjects by encouraging new initiatives for

literacy and maths and allowing our creativity to flourish.

We need someone who values outside learning, Nurture and our Forest School ethos, someone who will

trust us and use our different strengths to ensure we give each and every child a wide and varied

curriculum and the best possible start in life.

We are passionate about our curriculum, the value of play and the characteristics of learning.

Our children love to learn.

If you would like to be part of this dedicated community, please come and see us!

From the Pulham Staff team

Vision and Ethos of the school

St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians

OUR VISION Children are the heart of our Vision. Everyone will flourish when working together in a safe environment, rooted and grounded in Christian values. A culture of excellence together with our broad-based curriculum ensures pupils are equipped with wisdom, knowledge and skills. A desire for learning enables us to make a difference in the modern world. THE VISION Church of England School Pulham is one of over a hundred church schools in the Diocese of Norwich. As a VC (Voluntary Controlled) school, the collective worship is wholly Christian. The school is inspected regularly under the SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection framework. At the last SIAMS inspection the school was graded at Outstanding. The local church is well represented on the Governing Body and close links are maintained with the church itself, with the major Christian festivals being celebrated in the church. The Rector regularly attends school to deliver collective worship. Church members also deliver “Open the Book” (dramatized bible studies involving the children), and “Treasure seekers”, a lunch time bible-based activity session for pupils. Working together Pulham is a comparatively small Primary School and therefore the sharing and seeking of excellence with other schools is important. We regard ourselves as an outward looking, inward facing school and conduct research and look for examples of good practice to develop the educational offer for all our pupils. This has a positive impact in areas of Staff CPD and in their well-being and in the continuous improvement of the school both financially and academically. We will continue to work closely with Parents; the Local Authority, the Diocese and local Church, Parish Council, all those who have an interest in the success of the school. Safe working environment The Headteacher, Governors and staff are totally committed to providing a safe environment whether this is demonstrated through the implementation of our policies on Health and Safety or through the recruitment of staff. Everyone should be safe and feel safe. Rooted and grounded This descriptive phrase is a quote from St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians Ch 3 verse 17 and talks about people being rooted and grounded in love ‘so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith – that you being rooted and grounded in love may have the power to grasp how wide and long and how high and deep is the love of Christ.’

Christian values Christian values are at the heart of the school and are shared and lived out in the everyday life of the school. The values of love, forgiveness, hope and respect, shared with many faiths, inform the character of the school and are embedded in everything that we do strategically and academically. St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians Chapter 4 verse 32: ‘Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Culture of excellence The Headteacher and Governing Board want a school that is recognised as a Centre of excellence. A place where inspirational teaching is of the highest standard with the staff continually updating their knowledge. A modern approach to learning is embraced using technologically sound support. Through moderation and training, standards of teaching and learning are maintained. Broad–based curriculum We have developed a curriculum enhanced through trips that recognises the importance of developing the whole person. All pupils are given the opportunity to shine, to surprise themselves and others with no ceiling placed upon their learning. Embedded within our curriculum are the core values of activity, creativity, wisdom, and joy. Our curriculum celebrates diversity, endurance and compassion with the implementation, intent and impact of all elements considered. We will continue to devote time in the curriculum to those subjects that will encourage children to discover the natural world and to understand the part they play as stewards of their world. We recognise the need to fully resource the teaching and have classrooms and buildings that are fit for purpose. The school is graded good by OFSTED with outstanding areas. Pupil Centred Governors and Staff are committed to putting children at the centre of the school. In the day–to–day activity and the strategic development of the school pupils come first, their success is the driving force, their progress is of the greatest importance. Each child is unique Pulham school is inclusive and diverse welcoming all children and their parents irrespective of their culture, faith, background or ability. Care is taken to treat each child as a unique individual, appreciating that every child has their own strengths and areas of development which need to be nurtured in order to flourish. Our admissions policy welcomes all families, those of faith, Christian or not, or of no faith. Treating every child as a unique individual allows them to progress to be the best version of themselves. Desire for learning We encourage a positive growth mindset in all our staff and learners. Everyone knows that they can learn from their mistakes particularly when working independently. We instil in pupils and

staff a love of learning and a curiosity about the world around them that will enable them to take the next step, whether at High School or in their future adulthood. “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.” (Romans 12:6) Children will thrive and Shine as lights in the world In a happy, nurturing and safe environment, children will grow academically and spiritually. St. Paul is encouraging people of the early church to be cheerful and uncomplaining as they work for the benefit of others – as Jesus did. The reference is from St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians: ‘shine like stars in the world (Chapter 2 verse 15). Our wonderful world The world is very large; mass instant communication has made it easy to make connections all over the world. Children today need to be able to take their part and succeed in a rapidly changing world. Introduction to other places, cultures and faiths gives pupils the opportunity to develop their understanding and respect for the modern world. Being able to make friends and communicate, whilst obtaining skills and values will enable everyone to grow as members of society and the world. As a result, pupils will grow as courageous advocates, striving to make a difference in our world.

The Pulhams

Just 15 miles south of Norwich, or an easy half hour drive (against the rush hour traffic!) Pulham Market is a picture-perfect village set around a picturesque green. Alongside our school, it has two pubs, a doctor’s surgery, village shop, DIY store and a large garden centre. Neighbouring Pulham St Mary is home to the Pennoyer Centre which first came to public attention when it was featured on the BBC’s Restoration Village TV series as a derelict building at risk. Fast forward to today and it is a beautiful business, heritage, education and community venue with a popular cafe. It also showcases the history of the Pulhams, including a fascination archive of Airship memorabilia relating to the Pulham Pigs - huge airships that were based in the village during the First World War.

Our beautiful Norfolk

Known for its big skies, wind-swept beaches and peaceful Broads, Norfolk is a gentle county with a huge amount to offer both visitors and locals alike. There are many beautiful walks with one of its most famous - Boudicca Way - passing through Pulham Market. We are very lucky to benefit from an abundance of countryside, coastal sites, waterways and woodlands, much of which is protected by organisations such as the RSPB, Woodland Trust, the Broads Authority and the National Trust. While away a day exploring the magical Broads, visit stunning Blickling Hall, fish for crabs off Cromer pier or enjoy the many seaside delights of Great Yarmouth, including the famous Hippodrome - Britain’s only surviving total circus building with a hidden surprise! Head to the quiet village of Burnham Thorpe in North Norfolk, the birthplace of one of Norfolk’s most famous sons, Admiral Horatio Nelson or visit Sandringham, the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty, The Queen. The jewel in Norfolk’s crown is the city of Norwich - the most complete medieval city in the UK. Frequently featuring in the list of the nation’s happiest places to live, the fine city of Norwich is just half an hour’s drive from our school. A beautiful city steeped in history; Norwich also has both feet very firmly in the 21st century. Norwich Castle - a Norman stronghold in the centre of the city - combines the history of our beautiful county with a fantastic programme of art exhibitions. In fact, art lovers are spoilt for choice in Norwich with a range of art galleries, spearheaded by the Norman Foster-designed Sainsbury Centre which hosts a series of world-class art exhibitions, alongside its permanent collection. Theatre-goers are in for a treat too with Norwich Theatre Royal, Norwich Playhouse and the Maddermarket Theatre offering up an eclectic mix of drama, comedy, musicals. Music fans, both popular and classical, will find much to enjoy among the city’s many venues.

With two bustling shopping malls, you can shop till you drop before heading to one of the city’s many bars or restaurants for sustenance.
