1.0 PREAMBLE
M/s Mounthill Reality Private Limited proposed construction of high rise building at Survey no.
25/7, Ambivali, Khalapur. It is required to carry out the Geotechnical investigation to check the
subsurface profile. M/s S & R Geotechniques Pvt Ltd has awarded the Soil investigation work;
vide PO no. 10000080/15‐16 dated. 5‐Oct‐2015.
The report presented herein deals with the observations and findings during the field
investigation work and analysis of data from laboratory tests for 10 bore holes.
2.0 SCOPE OF WORK
2.1 The objectives of investigation were to obtain:
A) Subsurface profile detailing different stratum and their variation along the alignment.
B) To determine the engineering properties of the stratum and design parameter to
decide the suitable foundation.
2.2 To study the properties of the strata available in the area of proposed high rise building ,it
was decided to take ten borehole.
2.3 These bore holes were drilled during the period of 10th Oct 2015 to 25th Oct 2015.
2.4 The scope of work provided for this project was limited to the following: ‐
2.4.1 Mobilization of necessary equipments, men and material to the project site for
carrying out the Soil investigation and demobilization of the same after completion of
the field works etc. all complete as per specification, drawings and as directed by the
Engineer‐in‐Charge.
2.4.2 General clearance of site and removal of shrubs, bushes etc. up to 150 mm below
ground level and disposing at places as directed by Engineer‐in‐charge.
2.4.3 Making 100 mm nominal diameter bore holes at various locations using Rotary Rig up
to soil.
2.4.4 After reaching the rock, the bore holes as above are to be extended by core drilling
(Nx size) in rocky strata using rotary drilling and double tube core barrel with
diamond bits up to required depth below the existing ground surface as per
directions of Engineer‐in‐Charge including collection and preservation of rock
samples, recording of core recovery (%) and R.Q.D (%) as specified.

2.4.5 Recording the depth of ground water table in all the bore holes if observed up to the
depth of exploration during boring work as per IS & withdrawing the casing pipe.
2.4.6 Conducting Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) is soil, soft and weathered rock and
collecting, packing and labeling the samples.
2.4.7 Conducting the laboratory tests on selected rock samples collected from the test
locations:
2.4.8 Preparation and submission of report including recommendations; suggestions for
allowable bearing capacities; results of field and laboratory tests; bore logs; etc.

4.0 GEOLOGY OF AREA
4.1 General Geology of Maharashtra
It is Located in the north eastern part of Indian peninsula. Maharashtra physically is a plateau
region. Its western edges form the Sahyadri range and its slope gently descending towards
the east and south‐east. Nearly 90% of the land in Maharashtra is formed from lava.
Maharashtra plateau is mainly made up of basalt rocks also referred to as Deccan Trap or
Deccan Trap Basalts, formed from eruption of lavas some 65 million years ago. These lava
flows vary in thickness from a few meters up to hundreds of meter. Each lava flow can further
be divided into units and sub‐units. In general the Deccan Basalts can be grouped into two
categories, ‘simple’ or ‘compound’, depending on viscosity of the primary lava.
The simple Basalt flows equate to classic flood Basalts formed by effusive eruption of very
large quantities of low viscosity lava from open fissures. The compound flows are either the
product of explosive activity from more viscous lavas or can be formed at the distal portion of
simple flows were there is an increased viscosity from cooling and de‐gassing. Both types of
Basalt flows tend to weather variably even across small outcrops.
4.2 Local Geological Survey
Based on the findings of investigation by conducting ten bore holes, it is found that the
project area is covered entirely by the basalts. Initial stratum is completely to highly
weathered rock with soil underlying the slightly weathered to fresh Amygdaloidal Basalt
gradually from top to bottom. Secondary fills along fractures and vesicles are calcite, quartz
and other minerals as amygdales. The ground water in the area has played a major role in the
weathering process of the rock.

5.0 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION
Investigation was carried out in two stages – on Field and at Laboratory.
The fieldwork carried out is summarized in Table 1 and location is given in Annexure I.

5.1 Field Investigation
5.1.1 Bore holes were made of 150‐mm diameter in soil and using temporary casing
supporting sides of the hole. Drilling was carried out in rock stratum using Nx size
diamond Bit and Double Tube core barrel.
5.1.2 Rock cores recovered during drilling were arranged sequentially in core boxes and
identification was painted on them. Their core recovery and Rock Quality Designation
(RQD) were recorded in the bore logs. The rock type was identified and the
descriptions were presented in the bore logs in Annexure I.
5.2 Rock Coring
4.2.1 Rotary drilling rigs having the capacity of drill up to 50 m depth has been used to drill
through the rock stratum. The diamond bits were used to drill through weathered

rock/ hard rock stratum. Recovered cores were measured and percentage Core
Recovery (CR) and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) has been calculated as under:
Core Recovery (CR), % = (Total Core Length/Length of Run) x 100

(Length of Cores > 101.6 mm (4 inches and above)/Length of Run) x 100
The samples recovered during each run were arranged sequentially in wooden core
boxes and the identifications – Borehole number and piece number were painted on
them.
4.2.2 Ground water table was recorded in each borehole after 24 hrs and recorded depths
are indicated on the bore logs and are summarised in Table 1.
4.2.3 The typical calculations for safe load capacity of piles have been given in Annexure II.
4.3 Laboratory Tests
Selected soil and rock cores were tested in Laboratory for the following tests:
4.3.2 Water Absorption, Porosity ‐ The water absorption and porosity of the rock
Sample was determined on rock samples. Water absorption is expressed as the
percentage of water content with respect to the dry weight of the sample. The
porosity of the rock sample is the ratio of voids to the total volume of the rock
sample. The relation between Specific Gravity of rock (G), Dry Density of Rock (d),
Density of Water (w) and porosity (n) can be expressed as –
n = 1 ‐ (d / G w ) * 100
4.3.3 Density‐ The density of the rock sample was determined by mercury displacement
method. The density of the rock is the weight per unit volume of the rock material.
Sometimes the term “Unit Weight” is also used for Density.
4.3.4 Specific gravity ‐ The specific gravity of the rock sample was determined by using
pycnometer. Specific gravity ‘G’ is defined as the ratio of the weight of a given
volume of rock at a given temperature to the weight of equal volume of distilled
water.
4.3.5 Unconfined compression strength – The Unconfined Compressive Strength of rock
samples of rock with 7 days saturation and without saturation was determined using
compressive testing machine.

4.3.6 Point load method ‐ The point load strength index of rocks samples was determined
by using compression testing machine with the conical loading platens.
4.3.7 The results of laboratory tests are attached as Annexure III.
6.0 FINDINGS OF INVESTIGATION
Based on the data of this borehole, the sub‐surface profile encountered up to the depth of
investigation can be categorized in to five distinct strata as under:
Strata –I: Brownish Colored Completely/Moderately Weathered Rock with gravelly soil
Strata–II: Grayish colored Fractured Fresh Amygdaloidal Basalt Rock with white infillings.
The ground water table was observed at a depth of 1.10m – 1.40m below the existing
ground level. However, the same may rise above during the monsoons.
6.1 BROWNISH COLORED COMPLETELY/MODERATELY WEATHERED BASALT ROCK WITH
GRAVELY SOIL ROCK (0.00 m – 3.00 m)
The initial stratum is “Brownish coloured completely/ Moderately Weathered Basalt Rock
with gravely soil”. SPT values in this stratum are 28 to refusal. Recovery varies from 10% ‐ 33%
and R.Q.D varies from Nill ‐28%. The thickness of this stratum is 0.50‐3.00 m.The laboratory
test results are presented in Annexure III.
6.2 GRAYISH COLORED FRACTURED FRESH AMYGDALOIDAL BASALT ROCK (0.00 m – 10.00 m)
After initial weathered rock layer “Grayish Colored Fractured Fresh Amygdaloidal Basalt Rock”
is encountered. This layer is observed from ground level in BH 10. Recovery varies from 31% ‐
99% and RQD varies from Nil to 99%. The laboratory test results are presented in Annexure III.

7. FOUNDATION ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATION
As stated above, at this site at all boreholes locations, grey igneous rock i.e.
Completely/Moderately weathered to fresh, moderately to highly strong, light grey colored,
Amygdaloidal Basalt, showing presence of minute vesicles (<1 mm to 2 mm) and fractures
filled with secondary calcite and Zeolite mineral is available between 1.0 m to 10.0 m depths
below existing ground level.
For proposed structure, foundations should place on/in grey igneous rock stratum at
minimum 1.00 m to 1.5 m depths below existing ground level. Isolated, combined, strip
footings or even raft foundation can be adopted for proposed tower structure.
Safe bearing capacity of rock stratum can calculate using unconfined compression strength /
point load index value of rock cores tested in laboratory. For determining safe bearing
capacity of rock stratum, it is the usual practice to consider the unconfined compression
strength of rock cores determined in the laboratory as the ultimate bearing capacity of in
situ rock mass. Then adopting a factor of safety value of 3 to 10, the net safe bearing
capacity of rock stratum is worked out. In fact in situ rock mass is in confined condition and
therefore, it can possess higher ultimate strengths as compared to laboratory unconfined
compression strengths.

8. SUMMARY AND CALCULATIONS
Calculation for evaluation of safe bearing capacity of rock stratum is given below.

qc = average uni‐axial compressive strength of rock cores = 306.81 Kg/sqcm (Average value
between 1.0 m to 3.0 m depths)
Nj= empirical coefficient depending on the spacing of discontinuities = 0.10
Nw = Water table correction = 0.75
Hence, qs = 306.81 * 0.10 *0.75 = 23.01 Kg/cm2 = 230.01 T/m2.
Say 200.0 T/m2
It is to be noted that rock layer undergo immediate settlements only, but not the long‐term
consolidation settlements.
Immediate settlement (Si) of rock stratum can be determined using expression given below:
Si = [q x B x (1 – 2) x I] / E
Where,
Si = immediate settlement
q = net intensity of pressure = 450 T/sqm
B = width / diameter of footings, consider minimum 5 m for isolated/combined/strip footings
and 10 m for raft foundation.
= poissons ration = 0.15 for rock stratum
I = rigidity factor = 1 and
E = Modulus of elasticity of rock stratum = 70000 Kg/cm2
Hence,
For isolated / combined / strip foundations, considering minimum width of foundation equal
to 5. 0 m, immediate settlement would be about
= [45 x 500 x (1 – 0.152) x 1]/ 70000 = 0.314 cm < 5.0 cm, hence ok

For raft foundation considering width of raft equal to 10 m, then immediate settlement of
rock stratum would be about
= [45 x 1000 x (1 – 0.152) x 1]/ 70000 = 0.628 cm < 1.2 cm hence ok
Modulus of subgrade reaction value of rock mass in‐between 5 to 10 Kg/cm3 should be taken
for designing isolated and strip footing foundations.
Shear modulus G can be evaluated using equation E = 2 G (1 +)
Hence, G = 70000/ (2 (1+0.15)) = 30, 434 Kg/cm2
Adopt shear modulus G value equal to 25, 000 Kg/cm2.
9. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS‐
Referring to above discussion, following recommendations are given.
1. For structures isolated / combined footings foundation can be adopted.
2. Depth of r.c.c. footing foundation shall not be less than 1.50 m with respect to existing
ground level and should rest in rock stratum only.
3. Adopt net safe allowable bearing capacity of the order of 200 T/sqm for footing foundation
designs.
4. The minimum width of footing foundation shall not be less than 2.5 m.
B OTHER PARAMETERS
1. For designing isolated and strip footing foundations, adopt subgrade modulus value in
between 5 to 10 Kg/cm3.
2. Adopt shear modulus G value of rock mass equal to 25,000 Kg/cm2.
3. Percentage of sulphates and chlorides contents in ground water samples are within
permissible limits.
