Maggot

Barriers™

(300 count bags)

Maggot Barriers are a new product Grandpa has learned about that he

thinks is perfect for the backyard fruit grower. A 300 count zip lock bag

should provide about enough barriers for a common semi-dwarf tree if

the fruit is properly thinned out to achieve good size.

There are many burrowing insects, like apple maggot, codling moth,

oriental fruit fly, etc. that will burrow into growing fruit and eventually ruin

the fruit. Often you don't know of the infestation until it is too late, and

the insects are already doing their damage.

Chemical controls for these kinds of insects are expensive and have to

be applied often. Knowing when to properly time applications of

insecticides to control these insects is challenging even for commercial

growers of fruit. Also, some of the chemicals and insecticides used are

harsh, expensive, and often the insect becomes resistant to the

insecticide over time.

Apparently deer don't like to think that people are around, and

this red and silver reflective tape rustles in the slightest of

breeze in the orchard and makes the deer think there is

BUD 118 Semi-

Standard Apple

Rootstock

Bud 118 (Budagovsky 118) [80-85%]--- This is a very hardy apple rootstock that is

gaining in popularity.  Produces almost a full-sized tree (approx 80-85% of

standard).  It is quite precocious, bearing much earlier than EMLA 111 which it

compares to. Does not require any support.  Very resistant to winter frost or

BUD 9 Full Dwarf

Apple Rootstock

Bud 9  (Budagovsky 9) [35-40%]--- This is a very hardy full dwarf apple rootstock

that is gaining in popularity.  Produces a full dwarf tree (approx 35-40%% of

standard).  Precocious.  Requires support--- staking or trellising.  Reported to be

resistant to collar rot, powdery mildew and apple scab.  Very resistant to winter

frost or damage.  Originally reported to be susceptible to fire blight, but

experiences in 2000 in Michigan have indicated that it seems to be quite tolerant

and much less susceptible than most other Malling 9 clones.   Does well in most

soils, but irrigation is recommended in light soils.

Geneva® 11

Dwarf Apple

Rootstock

Geneva 11™ [35-45%] --- This new Geneva rootstock is notable for its excellent

resistant to fire blight and crown rot.  Very precocious and should always be

supported. It is slightly smaller than EMLA 26..  Not widely available in the

commercial fruit tree nursery trade because of its relative "newness", but would be

one to work with in a grower's own nursery if the need is for fire blight resistance in

a dwarf orchard.  It does not appear to have the range of nursery problems that

Geneva 30 does.

Geneva® 30

Semi-Dwarf

Apple Rootstock

Geneva 30™ [45-55%] --- This new Geneva rootstock is notable for its excellent

resistance to fire blight and crown rot.  Very precocious with fair anchorage.

Should have support because of its early cropping characteristics.  Approx. 50% of

a standard tree.  This rootstock could be an excellent replacement for M 7 as it is

in the same size category and is much more precocious.  Not widely available in

the commercial fruit tree nursery trade because of several nursery production

problems, but would be one to work with in a grower's own nursery if the need is

for fire blight resistance in a semi-dwarf orchard.

Malling 106 Semi-

Dwarf/Standard

Rootstock

EMLA 106 (60-70%) rootstock is slightly more vigorous than EMLA 7 and slightly

less vigorous than EMLA 111. It is productive and completely free-standing. It

does NOT tolerate wet conditions, so it should only be planted in well drained soils

where standing water does not occur. It is often used by growers with proper sites

who wish to avoid the common problems of EMLA 7--- tipping and suckering---

neither of which is a problem with EMLA 106. It is only slightly susceptible to fire

blight, but is highly susceptible to phytophthera.

Rootstock

EMLA 7 [50-60%] --- This virus-free clone of Malling 7 has proven itself to be one

of the most popular rootstocks in the commercial industry, mostly due to its approx.

50-60% of standard size.  It tolerates a wide range of soils that are well drained,

but does best with adequate moisture thru the summer.  Moderately resistant to

collar rot.  Excellent winter hardiness.  Only moderately well anchored.  This is an

excellent beginners rootstock because of its versatility..
