From the Principal Welcome to Week 9, where we are so proud of the planning by Miss Hoskins and Mr Nixon and the hard work by students from Garden Club and Eco-Committee and parent volunteers, who transformed a bare space behind our flagpoles into an attractive outdoor learning space last Thursday afternoon after school. What a great team effort! Well done!Staff Car parkThank you to those parents who are supporting the safety of everyone’s children by not driving into, walking through or parking in our staff car park. Before and after school care has its own dedicated gate and path for parents and students to use. As stated in an earlier newsletter: This safety initiative and improvement has come from the Department of Education as a direct result of the terrible tragic accident last year in a Western Sydney school car park when a car driven by a parent injured students and two students lost their lives. We understand that this is a change for our parents using OOSH, however, it is to maximise the safety of everyone’s children. It is suggested that parents park on Appin Road then enter and exit OOSH via the new gate and path. There is now no staff car park access at any time. We thank you for your support.School staff have been instructed to close the gate behind them when they leave each day to ensure the safety of children at OOSH in the afternoons. Parents please do not put APS staff in an awkward position by asking them to leave the gate open for you. THERE IS NO PUBLIC ACCESS TO OUR STAFF CAR PARK AT ANY TIME. THIS IS TO KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE. Gala DayLast Friday was our second sporting Gala Day this term for students in Years 3-6 where students played Soccer, Netball, AFL, or Touch Footy against neighbouring school teams. In glorious winter weather, our students demonstrated great sportsmanship whether their team won or lost.School PhotosThe School Photographer has advised that photos will be delivered to school before the end of term. They do apologise for the delay. Thank you for your patience and understanding.C91.3 Schools National Tree Day CompetitionAppin is one of three finalists for the Schools National Tree Day Competition along with Ruse Public School and Spring Farm Public School. One lucky school will win a free tree planting day all thanks to Clinton’s Toyota. So please vote for Appin Public School on the C91.3 website or follow the link on C91.3 Facebook page. The school with the most amount of votes by 5pm on Thursday, 28th June will win this cool prize. C91.3 will turn up to the winning school with fruit trees, soil and planting supplies, National Tree Day kits and gift pack for all kids involved. C91.3FM’s Josh & Ally and the Road Crew will come down to the winning school, along with Clinton’s Toyota and help plant some trees at your school for School’s National Tree Day on Friday 27th July.
Student achievementsIt has been a very successful week of learning for our students! Styx class have commenced learning how to “code” with the assistance of Mrs Morrison, and have learnt so quickly and been able to apply this knowledge to teach themselves. Franklin class have been learning about whole numbers, halves and quarters which Peyton succinctly explained to Mrs Harrison. Yarra class have also been working hard in Maths to understand how to make, say and write two digit numbers and Billy has immensely improved his ability to complete his learning tasks. Jayden in Nepean class has earned his Maths passport for his mastering of times tables up to 12, for which he should be extremely proud. Murray class students Brooklyn, Charlee and Noah have achieved Mathletics certificates for the huge number of tasks they have recently completed and Blaze is making impressive progress with his writing. Daly class students Emily, Nevaeh, Lily, Amelia, Finlay, Imogen, Ellie and Candice are keen writers paying attention to engaging their audience with interesting language, thereby “showing not telling”. Achieving their learning goals in Swan class are Thomas for his correct letter formation and Desmond for being able to count backwards from 10. Swan class have been demonstrating their pleasing progress with their independent writing skills, in particular Tabitha, Tom, Bailey and Thomas showing their focussed writing habits. Kooper, Ilias and Ava in Darling class displayed their reading ability and confidence on the first day reading a new book. Darling class, as a whole, are making commendable progress in independent writing with Jaiden, Zavier, Joel, Harvey, Beau, Kai, Kooper, Matilda, Macie and Ilias proudly displaying their efforts.Keep up these fantastic efforts!Stamp Chart SuperstarsCongratulations to the following students who have filled their stamp chart, or accumulated dojo points, bydemonstrating and following classroom rules.Snowy: Nancy, Jarvis, Matilda, Noah, EbonySwan: Bailey, Tom, Heath, Harry, EmeliaFranklin: Blake, Ivy, Tahlia, Ruby, NaiteYarra: Ethan, Frank, Tyler, Joshua, Corey, Kalani, Riley, Skye, Sierra, MayaMargaret: Ivy, Jayson, Zaine, Noah, Lachlan, Olivia, Isla, MahliDaly: Finlay, LukeNepean: Jack, Will, Joel, Jet, BaileyOrara: Zavier, Caylen, AkiraStyx: Tommie

Peer Support - Week 6 – Joining In with OthersIn this week’s Peer Support session the children will be exploring how to join groups and how to accept others into their friendship group. The activities will give the children a chance to practise these skills, as well as how to say no in a respectful way, cope with being told no and inviting others to join them. Encourage your child to discuss with you the importance of saying no to people in a respectful way so that they don’t losefriends. Also discuss with your child various options they have at school if they should find themselves without anyone to play with during break time.Aboriginal performanceLast Thursday afternoon our students were delighted with a performance led by two talented Aboriginal dancers. Students learnt some Aboriginal words, saw three dances to welcome and to cleanse the meeting place and then joined the dancers in some new dance movements. It was a highly entertaining afternoon and a terrific introduction into the importance of NAIDOC Week, which occurs the first week of these coming school holidays.Aboriginal Students’ Holiday FunPlease investigate the following link for a terrific local opportunity during the next school holidays. https://www.australianbotanicgarden.com.au/What-s-On/Indigenous-Olympics
Donation of Exercise BallsIf anyone has large rubber exercise balls or hoppers they are not using and can donate to school, this would be greatly appreciated.
Wellbeing/PBL Suggestion BoxThe Wellbeing/PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) team is committed to ensuring a happy, supportive and inclusive environment for both students and the school community at Appin Public School. You can assist us in our role by giving us your feedback, comments and suggestions, which can be put in to the Wellbing/PBL Suggestion Box in the school office. Although you may not receive an individual response, all feedback and suggestions will be valued and taken into consideration by the team. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance!
National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)The nationally consistent approach to data collection provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students receiving adjustments because of disability in schools, and the adjustments provided by teachers to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students. The information that schools must give to the Department includes:• the student’s year of schooling• the student’s category of disability (physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional)• the student’s level of adjustment (support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustment). The information will not explicitly identify individual students. If you do not wish information about your child to be included in this data collection please inform our office staff by Friday.
Join us for a fun day filled with activities for the whole family including: Didge & Dance, Aboriginal Art & Crafts, Wiradjuri Language Workshops and Storytelling. Join us for the whole event or just drop in for a little while.
