Action! Independent

Teacher provides students with the BLM #3 – Car Loan Chart and uses an overhead to discuss the organizer with the students. Students are to use the Internet to research different financial institutions that offer car loans. Discuss with students the following:

APR Length of Loan Monthly Payments Total Finance Charge Total to be repaid Total Cost of various Loan

The teacher may wish to work through an example on the board to illustrate how to calculate the above information.

Alternately, the teacher may wish to demonstrate, using a finance tool found on any bank website, the various parts of a car loan and how the total amounts can be calculated.

Students should hand in the completed organizer for assessment.

Consolidate Debrief

As the students work through the organizer, they will realize that there are significant costs to owning a car and that different institutions offer different rates and terms for car loans. Students looking to buy a car, should be aware that they should ‘shop around’ for the car loan that best suits their circumstances.

.

Home Activity or Further Classroom Consolidation

Have students complete the organizer for homework. If students do not have Internet access, they may visit a financial institute to obtain the information.

Minds On…

Whole Class – Small GroupIn groups of 2 or 3, have students discuss the costs associated with vehicle ownership beyond buying or leasing. If they do not yet own their own car, think about the types of costs they may have seen on their family’s cars. Have them consider the following:

How much driving is done on the vehicle? Do their parents commute to work? How much driving is done for other activities?

What type of vehicle is owned and the amount of gasoline it consumes?

How old are the family vehicles owned and what type of repairs are done? What about replacement parts?

Choose one family vehicle and make a prediction on the yearly costs of operating the vehicle.

Groups record their findings on chart paper and share with class. Teacher facilitates discussion making reference to “Fixed Costs” and “Variable Costs”.

Make sure that a wide variety of responses are presented and accepted. Provide further examples when required.Have students think about how much driving affects the overall costs.

Action! Whole Class – Small Group

Once a car is owned or leased, the expenses that remain can be broken down into two categories; fixed costs and variable costs. As seen in the minds on discussion, these costs are different depending on where someone lives, the type of driving and distances driven, and the type of vehicle(s) owned.Fixed costs involve expenses that remain the same each month, such as Insurance, Loan or Lease Payments, Licence fees and taxes.Variable costs involve expenses that change in the amount or frequency, depending on how you drive, how much you drive, and the amount spent on service and repairs.

Example #1: Ryan works as a framer for a house builder. He lives 45 km away from the new subdivision he is working in. He just purchased a used vehicle, a 6 year old Pontiac Vibe for $6100. Ryan had some money for the down payment, but he had to borrow $4500 to finance the rest. His licence fee is $74.00 and his insurance is $2151.00 The Vibe has a fuel rating of 7.4 L/100km, and gas prices used can be current.

a) Complete a list of the fixed costs and variable costs that Ryan will have over the next year just to drive to work. Use the Black line master “FVC-2” to complete list.

When working through examples, students should work in their small groups on placemat paper. The teacher should consolidate with the whole class after each example.

Definition should be added to the student’s glossary of terms and the

2007-8 Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

b) Use the maintenance chart “MC-1” to calculate the overall maintenance charges.

Solution:

a) Fixed and Variable Costs: (Have students use the Black line Master FCV-2)

Fixed Costs:Financing: $4500 plus interest. If you have done interest calculations with your students, you can have them calculate the monthly finance costs. Otherwise it is sufficient to have students recognize this as a fixed cost.

Licence Fee: $74.00 yearly

Insurance: $2151.00 yearly

Variable Costs:Fuel: Have students think about the number of trips, then the number of km Ryan will drive to and from work.

Possible solution: Ryan makes 2 trips daily, 10 trips a week, based on 48-50 weeks a year. Students can come up with between 480-500 trips for the year. Have them multiply this by 45 km and the result is between 21600 to 22500 km total.

Students can then use ratios to base this on the fuel consumption of 7.4L/100 km for the Vibe. Have them calculate the number of litres consumed.

For 21600 km: 7.4L/100 km = 7.4 x 216 which produces 1598.4 LFor 22500 km: 7.4L/100 km = 7.4 x 225 which produces 1665.0 L

At this point, students can use the internet to research current gas prices and calculate the overall fuel cost to drive these distances. This is an excellent opportunity for a discussion on why these costs vary with the current fluctuating gas prices.

b) Maintenance Charges (use the Black line master MC-1 for prices)

Have students look at the Maintenance Chart MC-1 and determine through discussion which maintenance services will need to be performed. They should arrive at the following:

word should be added to the classroom word wall.

14

Page 15: Appendix B: Contextualized Learning Activities (CLAs) for …ontariomath.wikispaces.com/file/view/Business...  · Web viewContextualized learning activities ... The following BLM

2007-8 Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

(This is based on 21600 -22500 km, which of course only includes trips to work not other driving. Students may want to estimate personal driving km and calculate maintenance costs based on this total. This can be at the teacher’s discretion. )

Oil change should be done every 5000km, therefore four will be needed.Price: 4 x $36.95 = $147.80Brakes & Tire Rotation should be done every 10000 km, therefore this will need to be done twice.Price: 2 x $43.95 = $87.90

Total: $147.80 + $87.90 = $235.70

Have students calculate GST & PST on this. If they have added additional km, they can complete the necessary maintenance according to the chart.

Fuel Efficiency: The fuel efficiency of a vehicle can be expressed as how far a vehicle will travel per unit of fuel. Most commonly this is expressed in litres per 100 km (L/100km), or in miles per gallon (mpg). Other factors that can alter the fuel efficiency are speeds, tire inflation, rapid acceleration and quick stops.

Example #2:

A Ford SUV has a 94L fuel tank and a fuel efficiency rating of 13.2 L/100 km.

a) How far can the SUV travel on a full tank of gas?b) Using a current gas price, determine the cost to fill

up the tank.c) How many litres of gas will the SUV use in order to

drive 620 km?

Solution: a) 13.2 L = 94 L 100 km x km

x = 94 (100) 13.2

x = 712.12 km

b) Current price of gas in $/L x 94 L will produce the cost to fill up the gas tank.

For questions in the consolidate/debrief section, the following graph FCG-1 on Fuel Consumption can be used

Curriculum Document/Quiz/MarkingScheme Assess students’ ability to apply their understanding of Fixed vs Variable Costs. Use the quiz called “QFVC”.

Consolidate Debrief

We have seen through the examples studied that the amount of driving has a direct relationship to the cost per kilometer of driving. Proper vehicle maintenance will extend the life of your vehicle, your overall fuel economy and your safety while you are driving.

Have students brainstorm to come up with four or five of the most important factors of overall car ownership.

Factors that they should have on their list are:

Lease or loan payments Insurance Costs Gasoline Costs Maintenance or service costs Part Replacement Vehicle Depreciation

Think-Pair-ShareA discussion can take place on the reasons why students placed which factors as most important. Also discuss why the Maintenance Chart indicates that service should be done by kilometres driven or the months that pass.

Students can use large chart paper here or use a placemat format.

Students can discuss their placement of the factors and reasons with the whole class.

Concept Practice

Home Activity or Further Classroom Consolidation

Students should complete questions on the Black line master “HAQ-1”.

Student responses will vary.
