APPENDIX 2: DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT EACH PLANNING AREA SECONDARY SCHOOLS Thurrock is divided into ‘Planning Areas’ for the purpose of projecting and reviewing the demand from pupils needing places against the school capacity available in an ‘area’. The areas are geographically defined by significant topographical features including major roads, railway lines, streams etc, or by the nature of their isolation, for example, the small villages in the area. Individual school’s circumstances are taken into account as part of the area planning. Area reviews allow a more targeted analysis of school places and give a better picture of the sufficiency/deficiency of places for an area. Different planning areas face different issues that will require different strategies in order to manage them successfully. Thurrock operates 6 secondary planning areas. APPENDIX 2: DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT EACH PLANNING AREA

SECONDARY PLANNING AREA: AVELEY & PURFLEET

GENERAL

Aveley and Purfleet are in the west of the Borough. The school has an intake from the 3 primary schools serving the distinct population areas of Aveley and Purfleet. Its admission area is geographically separated from the rest of the Borough by the M25, although there is a road and pedestrian bridge over the motorway connecting Aveley to South Ockendon. Aveley is made up of an existing village and post war development, in which the school is situated. Purfleet is a mixture of turn of the century, and more modern housing development.

There is only one secondary school in this planning area: Ormiston Park Academy

SECONDARY PLANNING AREA: CHADWELL ST MARY & TILBURY

GENERAL

Chadwell St Mary and Tilbury lie to the east and south east of Grays.

Gateway Academy is the only secondary school in this planning area. The school receive their intakes from 6 primary schools, one of which is Roman Catholic.

SECONDARY PLANNING AREA: CHAFFORD HUNDRED

GENERAL

Chafford Hundred lies to the west of Grays adjacent to the Lakeside Shopping Centre. The area is a large residential development of mainly private homes started in the late 1980’s. It was the largest residential development in Western Europe at its conception. Secondary education is provided by one school that receives intakes from the three primary schools on the estate, as well as from 2 adjacent primary schools

The feeder schools are Harris Primary Academy, Tudor Court, Warren and some children from Stifford Primary and West Thurrock

Corringham and Stanford le Hope lie to the east of the Borough, in a discrete population area.

SECONDARY PLANNING AREA: GRAYS

GENERAL

Grays is situated at the centre of Borough, and has the highest concentration of population. It is a diverse area served by 3 secondary schools, one of which caters for RC girls only. It comprises established housing and properties built at the beginning of 1900’s and after the war to cater for the rehousing of Londoners.

The three secondary schools in this planning area are: Grays Media Grays Convent RC William Edwards
