Fake shoes and trainers are made with cheaper and less materials which do not provide sufficient comfort and support for feet. This may result in both short and long-term injuries to feet, knees and posture.

Specific Harm:Intellectual property crime is the theft of trademarks, logos and designs. Such criminality ignores quality and safety and can result in potential hazards such skin reactions due to dangerous chemicals being used when making fake branded goods such as clothes and footwear.

Counterfeit goods have extensive links to organised crime. When purchasing such goods consumers inadvertently help to fund drug dealers and people traffickers. The loss to genuine business in the UK from counterfeits is at least £1.3 billion a year and £900 million of this goes directly to organised crime.

Application to review the Premises Licence

The Premises Licence was revoked following an application submitted by Trading Standards to review the premises licence held by Mr Sari.

The ground for the licence revocation was the prevention of crime, disorder and public safety. Further to this, Mr Sari showed a disregard for the law and failure in the management of his business. Mr Sari could provide evidence of the implementation of systems to ensure duty had been paid on the alcohol.

Specific Harm:

The UK duty stamp aims to tackle fraud and is an indication that tax has been paid on products, to which the tax applies.

Duty Fraud damages the legitimate alcohol industry in the UK and results in an estimated loss of £1.2bn to UK taxpayers annually.

Specific Harm:

It is of concern that these items used directly on human skin ie the shampoos and conditioners or indirectly coming into contact with human skin via clothes washed in these washing powders are counterfeit and may not comply with the UK legislation , that is the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2008. Counterfeit washing powder can damage clothing, cause the breakdown of washing machines, cause skin irritation, severe or otherwise. When tested, the counterfeit shampoo/conditioner were found to have no preservatives making them a medium in which bacteria could multiply easily. As well as causing skin irritation, severe or otherwise, users of the shampoo/conditioner risked eye and ear infections, severe or otherwise. These items were imported into the country by this trader. It is the responsibility of the importer and/or distributors’ responsibility to ensure that these items do comply with UK legislation and not just buy and sell items for a profit.
