Defining the word "Appeasement"

Neville Chamberlain was that posh Prime Minister we had a whileback that liked waving paper around. He also liked appeasingGermany. Google's definition: "The state of being appeased; the policy of giving in to demands inorder to preserve the peace"  This didn't work with Hitler - he thought he could walk all over Europe!

Background to Appeasement

The most famous account is of the lead up to WW2 where NevilleChamberlain appeased Hitler to try and prevent war. Firtsly: • Hitler joined with Austria in Anschluss• Then he remilitarized the Rhineland

• He then took the Sudetenland of Czechoslavakia• And finally conquered it

Reasons for Appeasement

• People felt sympathy for Germany• People had a desire for peace as they could still

remember WW1.• There was a threat of Communism from Russia and they

didn't want to ally with them.• Many countries, especially Britain, needed time to re-arm.

There are many things wrong with appeasement such as:• It is only very short term• The rest of the world misjudged Hitler, they thought he

was rational

• And it is morally wrong, theyallowed Germany to breaktreaties.

AppeasementTraditionalist - Cato (1940-50) Thought appeasement waswrong and suckish. 

Revisionist - AJP Taylor (1950) He thought appeasementwas the best option at the time. Counter Revisionist - McDonough (1990)Thought appeasement was the only option,

but it wasn't done very well.
