Commissioner’s Cup Appalachian State University claimed its seventh-straight Southern Conference Commis-sioner's Cup for excellence in men's athletics in 2011-12. The Mountaineers, who have claimed the Cup in 20 of the past 21 years, have now earned the award a total of 32 times. No other conference school has won the Commissioner’s Cup more than five times since its inception in 1969-70 and no current SoCon member besides ASU has claimed it more than once. Thanks to SoCon championships in three of 10 men's sports (baseball, men's outdoor track and field and wrestling), the Apps cruised to the Commissioner's Cup title by finishing a whopping 27.5 points ahead of second-place Samford (66.5 points). Appalachian's margin of victory in the Commis-sioner's Cup standings marks the largest gap since ASU finished 29 points ahead of East Tennessee State and Furman during the 2002-03 season. Appalachian State also finished just three points behind College of Charleston in the Ger-mann Cup standings, awarded for excellence in women's athletics. The Mountaineers finished with 78.5 points on the women's side to claim third-place behind CofC and Samford.

Dear Appalachian Family,

We submit to you, our biggest supporters, the 2011-12 Appalachian Athletics Annual Report. Within the attached pages are just some of the wonderful examples of the tangible ‘Experience Based Learning’ that occurs on our campus each and every day from the commitment of a dedicated staff and tremendous young people.

This past year was truly special as our men’s program earned the highest honor in the Southern Conference with Commissioner’s Cup victory.

We are fortunate to enjoy many successes – on the field of com-petition, in the classroom and in the community. Providing our 460 student-athletes with what we proudly describe as the Appalachian State Experience is our paramount goal each and every year.

However, we could not accomplish our goals and enjoy the tremen-dous success without your involvement and support. Your time and resources make a difference for the next generation of Appalachian leaders.

Again, on behalf of the entire Appalachian State athletics depart-ment, I thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy reading the next few pages and celebrating as a part of the Appalachian Family.

Around the Mountain in 2011-12

In just its second year of existence, the Student Yosef Club nearly tripled membership from the initial drive in 2010-11, boasting 750 members in 2011-12. The student group offers unique benefits to members, such as early admission to football games, priority seating for basketball games, a t-shirt, Yosef Club Priority Points, a membership card and a subscription to the Black and Gold magazine. Members receive other gifts throughout the year as well, such as SYC sunglasses and admission to an on-campus concert.

Appalachian hosted a pair of Southern Conference tourna-ments in 2011-12, welcoming the men’s soccer semifinal and championship contests in November and the entire softball event in May. The events showcased two of the newest Moun-taineer athletic venues, as the tournaments were televised on ESPN3. Men’s soccer advanced to the tournament semifinal with a 2-0 win at Davidson. The Apps then fell, 2-1, in overtime against UNCG. Softball knocked off UNCG in its first-round game before falling to Georgia Southern and Elon.

With a majority of ASU’s athletic facilities receiving a facelift or renovations in the past several years, 2011-12 was Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium’s turn for upgrades. Both the playing surface and drainage system were completely overhauled ahead of the 2012 campaign. Additionally, the dugouts were moved closer to home plate and spectator seating was moved closer to the action. The Apps also received their first-ever dedicated team locker room, located down the right-field line adjacent to the team’s hitting cages at the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility.

2011-12 marked another successful year in the online division of Appalachian athletics. GoASU.com and GoASU TV reached 1,686,000 Mountaineer fans around the world and broadcasted 167 live events and recorded audio and video productions featuring each of Appalachian’s 20 programs. Highlighted by six live football broadcasts during the 2011 season, nearly 40,000 unique visitors tuned in to GoASU TV. GoASU.com saw more than 9,650,000 page views during the academic year for athlete bios, competition recaps, live chats and numerous other features.

Wrestling Reaches the Peak

2011-12 was a banner year for Appalachian State wrestling on both the team and individual levels. The Mountaineers claimed their first Southern Conference championship since 2002-03 with an unblemished regular season record. Five Apps earned all-SoCon honors, led by SoCon champions Austin Trotman (184 pounds) and Mike Kessler (141). Additionally, Kyle Blevins was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year. While such high honors might be enough for some athletes, the Mountaineers were not content to rest on their league victories. Both Blevins and Trotman went on to earn all-America honors for SoCon Coach of the Year JohnMark Bentley. Trotman finished third in the nation for his weight class after defeating each of the top three seeds at the NCAA Tournament, while Blevins rode a six-match winning streak at the event before taking home fourth place. Trotman capped off the year as the first wrestler to be named Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year in the 63-year history of the award.

Track and Field Squads Sustain Success

Appalachian’s men’s and women’s track and field teams combined to win three Southern Conference titles in 2011-12, continuing the programs’ league dominance. Program director John Weaver added three more Coach of the Year awards to his already-packed trophy case and ASU also claimed four different Most Outstanding Perfomer honors as well. In four meets, ASU won a total of 132 all-conference honors in individual events, as well as numerous relays throughout the seasons.

Women’s Basketball Continues Growth

Appalachian State women’s basketball dominated the Southern Conference en route to a second-straight regular-season league title and earned a third-straight postseason berth. Playing in the WNIT was not satisfying enough for head coach Darcie Vincent’s crew, as the Apps won a pair of games to advance to the tournament’s Sweet 16. In recognition for their excellence on the court, Anna Freeman was named the SoCon Player of the Year and Maryah Sydnor earned Freshman of the Year honors. Courtney Freeman joined the pair on the all-SoCon team as well. ASU opened the season well, posting an 8-2 mark in non-conference action with the losses coming on the road at Georgia and in the season opener at Virginia. The Apps then tore through the league with a 17-3 mark heading into the SoCon Tournament. In Asheville, ASU won its first two games by a combined 43 points to set up a rematch in the title game against Samford. In the championship, ASU faltered in a 54-43 setback, but proved enough to earn a bid to the WNIT. In the WNIT, ASU went on the road to upset UNC Wilmington and NC State before the season came to an end where it began, at Virginia.

Baseball Takes the Next Step

Appalachian State baseball erased a 26-year postseason drought by winning its first Southern Confer-ence title since 1987 and advancing to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship and the Charlottesville, Va. Regional. The squad picked up a program-record 41 wins along the way and came just one win away from advancing to its first-ever Super Regional. The Apps had a 2-6 record in regional play entering the 2012 edition, but quickly doubled that with a 5-4 win over second-seeded Oklahoma in the opener, followed by a tight 6-5 victory against top-seeded and host Virginia to advance to the Regional Championship round. Following a grueling weekend marked by rain delays, the Apps came up just short of the Super Regional with a pair of Monday losses to the Sooners. Appalachian broke into national rankings on several occasions throughout the year, including after winning two out of three games at No. 7 LSU early in the campaign. The Mountain-eers wrapped up the season ranked No. 29 nationally. For their efforts, several Mountaineers earned indivdual honors. Slugger Daniel Kassouf was named All-America and District Player of the Year honors and pitcher Ryan Arrowood was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Year. Jamie Nunn was named a freshman all-American as well. Capping off the season, Arrowood was joined by Seth Grant, Nathan Hyatt and Tyler Tewell in June as MLB First-Year Player Draft selections.

Football Boasts National Accolades, NFL Prospects

All Mountaineer football did in 2011 was post an 8-4 record, upset top-ranked Georgia Southern, lead Division I FCS in attendance for a fifth-straight season while extending its regular-season over-capacity streak to 40 games, earn a first-round bye in the NCAA Division I Championship, place four players on all-America teams and have 12 players earn all-Southern Conference recognition. Several Apps decided to extend their playing careers by testing out their professional potential, including wide receiver Brian Quick, who became the school’s highest NFL draft pick as he was selected with the first pick of the second round by the St. Louis Rams. Quick was soon joined in the NFL ranks by running back Travaris Cadet and DeAndre Presley, bringing the total number of Mountaineers in the pro ranks to 10. In the second game of the 2011 season, head coach Jerry Moore earned his 200th win at Appalachian, making him one of 18 coaches to win as many games at one Division I institution. He completed the year with 207 victories, good for 15th on the all-time Division I list.

Golf, Volleyball and Men’s Soccer Make Strides Women’s golf continued its steady run in 2011-12 with a pair of tournament championships and the program’s best league finish in a decade. Head coach Heather Brown’s squad claimed victory in the Dayton/Hilton Head Invitational in early March before successfully defending their Low Country Intercollegiate title from the previous season. Junior Rumbidzai Masamvu led the Apps in scoring at 77.46, followed closely by classmate and ASU all-time leading scorer Yue Xu, who averaged 77.63 strokes per round.

Appalachian State volleyball opened the season with a bang, downing NC State in front of a Holmes Center-record crowd. The Mountaineers went on to post a solid 11-2 home record on the year with additional wins over Wake Forest and all five SoCon North Division rivals. ASU claimed second place in the SoCon North and knocked out defending-champion Georgia Southern in the league tournament to advance to the semifinals. Seniors Alison Blasingame and Anna Wagner were named to the all-conference team.

Appalachian State men’s golf set the tone for the season early on when the squad carded a program-record 283 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate to claim its first team title of the season. The Apps then added to the trophy case in the spring at the Harmony Spring Break Match Play tournament with wins in the qualifying and match play rounds. Junior Josh Nichols also took home the individual title. Sophomore Casey Komline earned all-SoCon honors and helped head coach Bill Dicus’ squad to a sixth-place finish at the league tournament.

Men’s soccer defied the odds in 2011 to post a 10-5-4 record and advance to the Southern Conference semifinals. The Mountaineers rallied under the leadership of Matt Nelson to challenge a program mark with a win or tie nine-straight matches. ASU finished the regular season in fourth place in the SoCon and downed Davidson in the tournament quarterfinal. Five Mountaineers earned all-conference honors and Nelson was named the league’s Coach of the Year. Lee Williams was named to the all-region team as well.

Three Programs Earn National APR Recognition

Continued Success in the Classroom

Appalachian State University’s 20 varsity teams excelled in the latest full NCAA Aca-demic Progress Rate (APR), which was released by the NCAA in June 2012. Each of Appalachian State’s 20 programs have a multi-year APR score of 947 or higher (out of 1,000), comfortably above the 925 threshold used by the NCAA to dole out sanctions to institutions, including reductions of scholarships and practice time and postseason bans. Additionally, 13 of Appalachian’s 20 teams have APR scores above the national averages for their respective sports while the other seven all stand within seven points of their sports’ national averages. Leading the way is the academic performance of Appalachian State’s football pro-gram, which boasts a multi-year APR of 982, 38 points higher than the NCAA Division I FCS average of 944. The Mountaineers’ football APR easily leads the Southern Confer-ence and is 25 points higher than the SoCon average of 957. A total of six Appalachian teams have APR scores of at least 10 points higher than the national average in their respective sports: football, men’s cross country (1,000 — 27 points higher than national average of 973), men’s indoor track and field (978 — 15 points higher than national average of 963), wrestling (975 — 15 points higher than national average of 960), men’s outdoor track and field (977 — 12 points higher than na-tional average of 965) and field hockey (1,000 — 10 points higher than national average of 990). A week earlier, the NCAA announced that football, men’s cross country and field hockey had received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports. The APR provides a real-time look at a program’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each scholarship student-athlete. The APR formula accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The latest multi-year APR data accounts for a four-year period beginning in 2007-08 and ending in 2010-11.

Three Appalachian State University athletic programs — men’s cross country, field hockey and football — earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports in the lat-est multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, the NCAA announced. The award is a first for Appalachian State’s football program and the first for any Southern Conference gridiron squad since Furman and Wofford earned the distinction in 2006-07. Of the 14 NCAA Division I FCS schools to receive the prestigious recognition on Thursday, Appalachian is the only to offer a full allotment of 63 football scholarships and the lone public institution. Eight of the 14 hail from the academically esteemed Ivy League. The Mountaineers have boasted the SoCon’s highest APR for four-straight years (2007-08 through 2010-11) while also winning the conference championship each season under head coach Jerry Moore. Field hockey continues its impressive academic performance by earning a Public Recognition Award for a fourth-straight year. The program owns a perfect multi-year APR score of 1,000, meaning that every scholarship student-athlete that has been a part of the program over the last four years has remained at Appalachian State and in good academic standing under head coach Brandi Alexander Kist. Men’s cross country also boasts a perfect multi-year APR of 1,000, a feat made even more impressive by the fact that it also won SoCon championships each year during the four-year span. The Public Recognition Award is a first for the program under head coach Michael Curcio. “These Public Recognition Awards are an outstanding honor for Appalachian State University,” director of athletics Charlie Cobb said. “To be recognized for aca-demic achievement along with schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Notre Dame is an accomplishment that our entire University can be very proud of.”

“The student-athletes deserve most of credit for their hard work and dedica-tion in the classroom but this achievement also speaks volumes to what Jean Roberts, Kim Sherrill, John Sevier, Jonathan Reeder and Sharon Trivette of the Learning Assistance Program do for Appalachian, what associate athletics direc-tor Jay Sutton does as our department’s liaison with the LAP and to the caliber of student-athletes that our coaches are recruiting,” Cobb said.
