2. Membership Criteria

"o#rce$ Section 1 of the Act, [1] and Section 1- of Aberta eg!ation 1/022 dated 3!y 14,1222, and -500- dated 6ebr!ary 7, 00-. []

['otes$ Section 1 of the Act a!thori#es the registration of professiona engineers, professionageoscientists, as we as icensees (non*residents of Aberta), permit hoders (partnerships orcorporations), %oint firms, and restricted practitioners. Aberta ta"es an enightened approach totechnoogy by inc!ding professiona technoogists in the same Act as engineers, andgeoscientists. Aberta is aso !niq!e in enco!raging the membership of engineering st!dents, asdefined in eg!ation 1/022.

An individ!a may satisfy the registration req!irements as a professiona engineer or professionageoscientist thro!gh severa ro!tes, as stip!ated in Sections 7, 8, 10, and 1- of eg!ation1/0229]

 Students – Eligibility

 A person who meets the foowing req!irements and appies to the egistrar for registration isentited to be enroed as a st!dent9

(a) the appicant is of good character and rep!tation&(b) the appicant

(i) is enroed in a f!*time program at a !niversity in Aberta that is recogni#ed by the $oard of :aminers as eading to a degree in engineering or geoscience, or (ii) has at east years of post*secondary ed!cation acceptabe to the $oard of:aminers in areas that reate to the science or technoogy of engineering orgeoscience, together with

(A) one year of eperience in wor" of an engineering or geoscientificnat!re acceptabe to the $oard of :aminers where the post*secondary

ed!cation consists of an engineering or geoscience technoogy programrecogni#ed by the $oard of :aminers, or ($) - years of s!ch wor" eperience, where the post*secondary ed!cationconsists of ed!cation other than s!ch a program.

 Examination andidates – Eligibility

* A person who meets the foowing req!irements and appies to the egistrar for registration isentited to be admitted as an eamination candidate9

(a) the appicant is of good character and rep!tation&(b) the appicant is a grad!ate of 

(i) a !niversity program in engineering or geoscience, or 

(ii) a reated academic program that is acceptabe to the $oard of :aminers, b!t the $oard of :aminers has req!ired the appicant to compete one or more confirmatoryeaminations or eaminations for the p!rpose of correcting a perceived academic deficiency.

 !embe"s-in-#"aining – Eligibility

1+ A person who meets the foowing req!irements and appies to the egistrar for registrationis entited to be admitted as an engineer*in*training or geoscientist*in*training9

(a) the appicant is of good character and rep!tation&

(b) the appicant(i) is a grad!ate of a !niversity program in engineering or geoscience or a reated!niversity program that is acceptabe to the $oard of :aminers, b!t does nothave the wor" eperience req!ired for registration as a professiona member, or 

(ii) is registered as an eamination candidate !nder section 8(b) and hascompeted the eaminations referred to in that provision, b!t does not have thewor" eperience req!ired for registration as a professiona member.

 P"ofessional !embe"s – Eligibility

1, (1) A person who meets the foowing req!irements and appies to the egistrar for registration is entited to be registered as a professiona member9

(a) the appicant is a +anadian citi#en or is awf!y admitted to +anada for permanentresidence&(b) the appicant is of good character and rep!tation&(c) the appicant has a "nowedge of the Act and the reg!ations !nder the Act, and

genera "nowedge reated to the practice of engineering or geoscience, which has beendemonstrated by passing an eamination that is prescribed by the $oard of :aminers&(d) the appicant demonstrates to the $oard of :aminers that the appicant has a proficiency in the :ngish ang!age that is s!fficient to enabe the appicant toresponsiby practise the profession of engineering or geoscience&(e) the appicant meets one of the foowing req!irements9

(i) the appicant is admitted as a member*in*training and has obtained at east 4years of eperience in wor" of an engineering or scientific nat!re that isacceptabe to the $oard of :aminers&(ii) the appicant is enroed as a st!dent !nder section 7(b) (ii) and

(A) has competed a eaminations prescribed by the $oard of :aminers,and($) has obtained at east 8 years of eperience in wor" of an engineeringor geoscientific nat!re that is acceptabe to the $oard of :aminers, ateast one year of which is obtained after competion of the eaminationsreferred to in paragraph (A)&

(iii) the appicant is admitted as an eamination candidate and(A) has competed the eaminations referred to in section 8(b), and($) has obtained at east 4 years of eperience in wor" of an engineeringor geoscientific nat!re that is acceptabe to the $oard of :aminers&

(iv) the appicant is not in a register or record referred to in s!bca!se (i), (ii) or(iii), b!t has the combined academic q!aifications and eperience acceptabe tothe $oard of :aminers that wo!d be req!ired for registration as a professionamember had the appicant progressed thro!gh one of those registers or records.

(a) is detrimenta to the best interests of the p!bic,(b) contravenes a code of ethics of the profession as estabished !nder the reg!ations,(c) harms or tends to harm the standing of the profession generay,(d) dispays a ac" of "nowedge of or ac" of s"i or %!dgment in the practice of the profession, or (e) dispays a ac" of "nowedge of or ac" of s"i or %!dgment in the carrying o!t of any

d!ty or obigation !nderta"en in the practice of the profession,whether or not that cond!ct is disgracef! or dishono!rabe, constit!tes either !ns"ied practiceof the profession or !nprofessiona cond!ct, whichever the <iscipine +ommittee or the Appea$oard finds.

() =f an investigated person fais to compy with or contravenes this Act, the reg!ations or the byaws, and the fai!re or contravention is, in the opinion of the <iscipine +ommittee, of aserio!s nat!re, the fai!re or contravention may be fo!nd by the <iscipine +ommittee to be!nprofessiona cond!ct whether or not it wo!d be so fo!nd !nder s!bsection (1).

, =f the <iscipine +ommittee finds that the cond!ct of the investigated person is!nprofessiona cond!ct or !ns"ied practice of the profession, or both, the <iscipine +ommitteemay ma"e any one or more of the foowing orders9

(a) reprimand the investigated person&(b) s!spend the registration of the investigated person for a specified period&(c) s!spend the registration of the investigated person either generay or from any fiedof practice !nti

(i) the investigated person has competed a specified co!rse of st!dies or obtained

s!pervised practica eperience, or (ii) the <iscipine +ommittee is satisfied as to the competence of the investigated person generay or in a specified fied of practice&

B Registered Professional echnologist (Engineering)$

art 5 of the :ngineering and @eoscience rofessions Act (Sections 8- to 2/) [1] defines thethree types of rofessiona Technoogist that are recogni#ed in Aberta. Section 85 of the Actestabishes severa %oint boards to administer technoogists, composed of an eq!a n!mber ofappointees of A:@A +o!nci and the Association of Science and :ngineering Technoogyrofessionas of Aberta (AS:T) +o!nci. Section 82 of the Act assigns to the Joint Board of Examiners a the powers, d!ties and f!nctions with respect to professiona technoogists that the$oard of :aminers has with respect to professiona members. Section 20(1) of the Act req!ires

the egistrar of AS:T to register as professiona technoogists, a those who are approved by the3oint $oard of :aminers.
