Captain Eugene A. Cernan spent twenty years as a Naval Aviator including thirteen years with NASA. He served as Pilot of Gemini IX, Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo X, and Commander of Apollo XVII. Captain Cernan was the last man to leave footprints on the lunar surface.

The Honorable Harrison H. Schmitt was selected as a Scientist-Astronaut in 1965. He served as Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo XVII, and is the twelfth man and the only scientist to step on the Moon. Elected in 1976, he served one term as a U.S. Senator from the State of New Mexico.

Captain Ronald E. Evans, Jr. was Command Module Pilot of the Apollo XVII mission. A highly decorated naval officer, he was also awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1973. Captain Evans passed away in 1990.

Samuel C. JohnSon Family Star theater The Adler Planetarium is grateful for the leadership of Imogene Powers Johnson and her family. Mrs. Johnson developed a passion for astronomy early in her life and during her studies at Cornell University. She has shared her love of observing with her children and grandchildren, and has supported initiatives in Racine, Wisconsin, and at the Adler that engage children in the wonder of the night sky.

As part of the recently concluded Lift-Off! Campaign, the Johnson Family Foundation made an extraordinary commitment to the renovation of the Adler’s 3D Universe Theater and its surrounding galleries. In addition to offering museum visitors thrilling shows, the restored theater will host conferences, live performances and lectures by world-class scientists. The 40th Anniversary of the Apollo XVII mission is the inaugural event in the Samuel C. Johnson Family Star Theater.

The Adler Planetarium is honored to recognize Imogene Powers Johnson and the Johnson Family for their commitment to inspiring the next generation of explorers.
