Hello everyone, and welcome back to Apocalypse Please!I Know This World Is Killing You: Weeks 1- 5

This story will continue with Mara Lakshmi's narration, asshe arrives to Hiddenbrook fresh out of college. At La Fiesta

Tech she was invited to join the LFT Society, and with thatwas told about the Society's safe house in Hiddenbrook.

Her boyfriend Gerry is still at university, so Mara is on herown, starting a new life, in a very eerie, oddly empty town.

So let's continue on with Mara's story, shall we?



When I arrived in Hiddenbrook, I got out of the taxi, and the taxiimmediately took off! I turned and noticed that my new home was

the only standing building for as far as I could see.

Why would the LFT Society build a home out in the middle of nowhere? Something is up, I just hope someone walks by soon so thatI can figure out what's going on.



I went inside and unpacked* a few things. This house is really empty,just a table, a few chairs, a bed, a fridge, a counter, a phone and a

toilet.

No sink? No oven? No shower? No separate room for the bed? I knew Iwasn't moving into a mansion, but I didn't think it'd be this... empty!---*Mara's three items are her diploma, elixir of life and smart milk.



I tried the phone, there wasn't any service. I opened my fridge,and there was only cereal and bread. I tried my bed, it was

horribly uncomfortable! I looked around outside and there wasliterally nothing and no one around.

I figured I would meditate and think on things until hopefullysomeone walked by. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get someanswers somehow!



During my meditation, I came to the conclusion that the LFT society must haveleft me some indication of what was going on. So I looked around the houseagain and noticed a letter laying on the table. How had I missed it before?

August 12, 2034It has been 3 months since the nuclear plant melt down. Very few survivedthe initial devastation. The loss was immense, and those who didn't starve todeath, froze to death, and those that didn't freeze to death fled. My son and Isurvived, my wife was taken from us. The media refused to cover our story,abandoning us when the government condemned our town. Everyone hasforgotten about us. The water is sullied, the ground was rendered useless.What was once a lush canyon is now a barren land. The only people whostayed either shut themselves up in small brick shacks which survived themeltdown, or chose to join the ever growing criminal band in raiding. Ourneighbors were overcome, all of their houses were demolished with only ours

remaining. This is when a group of college students came to us, asking to buyour home. They had this absurd idea that they could rebuild the canyon, andin turn it could become their Utopia.We couldn't refuse them, so we sold our home to them, and they moved us toPleasantview. I couldn't believe what I read. This town was really a condemnedtown by the government? No wonder that cab driver looked at me

like I was crazy when I asked to be taken here.

Now I don't think I'll be able to leave! I think I've made a hugemistake... I know I said I wanted to change the world, but Ithought that I could start by setting broken bones not rebuild awhole town after a nuclear meltdown!



I feel betrayed, abandoned and helpless. Who knows if anyone iseven within 100 miles around here?

I sulked for a long time. When all hope had almost disappeared,I saw someone walking towards my house! I ran outside, it was awoman in a trench coat.“Hello, you must be Mara?”“Yes, yes I am! H-how do you know who I am?”“I've been waiting for you, the LFT Society has charged me with

keeping an eye on you. Oh, my name is Ivy.”



“Are you part of the LFT Society too?”“No, I'm not,” Ivy seemed a little exasperated, “I'm one of the few

remaining residents of Hiddenbrook who didn't relocate, or turn tocrime. I think it's really noble that you and your Society want tohelp Hiddenbrook regain its former glory. It was once such a lovelytown.”I couldn't tell Ivy that I honestly had no clue what LFT Society hadinvolved me in without my knowledge.“I just don't know how I'll be able to help, how bad is the

contamination?”



Ivy then introduced me to Anna and a few other residents* of Hiddenbrook. They were all really excited that I was here to help,

and they wanted to know what my plan was. I told them that I hadalways wanted to be a doctor, so I would start by trying to gethired at a local hospital, the town could definitely use someonewho's medically trained.---*If you're familiar with thealicecat/xie_belle's Periodic Sims, youmay recognize Anna and some of my other townies. I've become close friends with my neighbors, mostly Anna. She isn't

much older than me. She graduated from SSU two years ago, andwas just getting settled in when the melt down ruined her life.

It turns out she was part of a similar society at SSU and was veryinterested in helping me plan for how to save this town.

She kept telling me she wishes that I could've seen it in its prime.



It was hard to get a good night's sleep with so many things

on my mind. The worst of it is that I haven't even talked toGerry since I left college. I miss him terribly!

And if I do ever talk to him again, will he ever forgive mefor pulling him into a situation like this?



My search for a job at the hospital is proving to be

impossible. I haven't seen an opening yet and I've beenchecking everyday since I moved here.



I spend quite a bit of my time alone these days. Since I

can't use my phone to invite people over I have to wait untilthey randomly drop by my house.

The weather itself has been miserable too, nothing butsnow. I tried making a snowman the other day to cheermyself up, but it didn't work.



Tomorrow I'll have been here for a whole week, and I stillhaven't seen a posting at the hospital a town over.

I've run out of money, so I have no choice but to take theonly job listed in the paper. I'll be going to work as aSouvenir Whittler and I'll make 483 simoleons per day.



I had a rude awakening this morning with a very loud pounding onmy door. A group of large intimidating men were at my door

demanding that I pay them “taxes” on my belongings. I felt trappedin an all too real mafia movie when I handed them over all the cashI had. (Well, I pretended it was all I had)---* After everything was sold back for the criminal restriction Maradidn't have enough money to buy her bed.



Not only was I paid today, but I received a promotion and a

bonus of 1260 simoleons. I'm now Comic Book Penciller, andI'll make 630 simoleons a day.



Being a comic book penciller isn't exactly what I had inmind for myself, but until something else comes up I'll stick

with it since I'm good at it.

Finding things to do outside of work to keep myself in agood mood is difficult sometimes so I resort to simplepleasures, like juggling.



Maybe I was meant to be an artist because after my firstday as a comic penciller my manager saw my compositional

skills and I got promoted to a wedding photographer. If thebride to be knew that their photographer lived inHiddenbrook, I'm sure I wouldn't ever find work, so my bossis keeping it a secret. Anyway, I got another bonus of 1616simoleons.



Another day, another promotion. It seems I can't go to workthese days without my boss thinking of something bigger

and better for me to do. I really would like to work inmedicine* still but there's still no jobs.---*Mara finally found a job opening in medicine, but she'slevel 5 in art and she isn't getting any younger. So I wastorn, but I ended up deciding to have her pick art over

hygiene, I think I'm just asking for trouble.



It's the strangest thing, I can receive phone calls, but I can'tmake them. So any time I hear the phone ring I run over to

answer it. I can't help but talk to whomever chooses to callme. That's why I've been talking to Orlando Centowski oneof the local teens, not exactly who I'd like to talk to, butlonely shut ins can't be too picky! Unfortunately I thinkOrlando may be growing too fond of me...



It's Friday now, and I have three days off from work. Myboss thinks I need to network* more, and since no one calls

me but Orlando, and I haven't talked to anyone from LFTsince I've moved – including Gerry! – I'm getting a bitworried.---*Mara has three days to make two friends for a promotionsince her friends from college aren't at friend status

anymore.



It seems the only people I talk to anymore are teenage

boys, not a healthy habit I know. But I'm guaranteed to seeDerek everyday since he delivers the paper rain or shine.I've also found myself talking to my mail carrier Sheldon forthe same reason.

I just wish someone would wander by my house.



Almost as if she heard me, Anna walked by my house as Iwas talking to Derek. I quickly said good bye to him andinvited Anna to come inside. I'm so happy she's here!



“Anna, you have perfect timing, I've been getting so lonelylately that I've been talking to teenage boys, and who really

wants to do that except for teenage girls?”“You crack me up, Derek seems nice enough,” Anna responded.“That's just it, nice enough. That's the least of my concernsright now though, I miss Gerry terribly, you don't think he'sforgotten about me? I still haven't been able to talk to him sincecollege...”



“What if he's met another girl at LFT and moved on?” I was relievedto finally share my anxiety with a friend.

“Mara, sweety, you've only been here for two weeks, you'reengaged to Gerry, he hasn't forgotten about you, I promise. Oh, andyou do know that you can make calls on Tuesday mornings betweenmidnight and noon right?”“Really? No, no I hadn't...”Anna and I talked into the late hours of the night, and slowly but

surely she was convincing me that everything would be okay.



Ben Long ended up stopping by that morning before I wentto work, and we caught up. Hopefully my boss will think I've

done enough networking for me to get a promotion! I reallythink that if I can earn more money I'll be able to convinceGerry to move here with me...---*Mara befriended Ben and Goopy before she headed towork, making the necessary friends for a promotion.

WEEK 3



The moment I saw Gerry, I kissed him. And kissed him...



And kissed him again. He didn't object, he just pulled me in

closer. I started to feel badly for thinking he would evercheat on me. He hadn't even asked me yet why I had movedto Hiddenbrook...



Contraceptives are impossible to get in Hiddenbrook* soGerry and I didn't take any chances, there's no way we'd

bring a baby into this house with me on my own!---*The medical restriction makes it so sims can only “try for a baby” if they want to woohoo.



It felt so good to have Gerry there with me all night,

holding me close. It was the first time in weeks that Iactually felt warm. Not just warm physically, but my heartfelt full again, full of hope. Gerry has always had a way of calming me down.



Once it was morning, Gerry and I finally talked aboutHiddenbrook and I decided to tell him about the LFT Society

and how it was really them who had upset me years ago whilein college. While he wasn't too excited to move to such adesolate town, he said he couldn't live without me, so he'dmove as soon as his courses* were done.---*Of course if you're familiar with the apocalypse rules, you'll

know he won't be able to move in until Mara tops her career.



Gerry stayed as long as he could, but when it was time for

me to head to work, he went back to LFT.



It's hard to believe that it's only my 5th day at work and I'vebeen promoted again... actually everyday that I've gone to

work I've gotten a promotion. This time my boss assignedme to some mural work. I was paid a bonus of 4464simoleons for today's work. I think I'm going to have to finda way to expand my home with all the money I've beensaving.



I still greet everyone who walks by my home since it's sorare to get visitors. This is Allison, we're getting along really

well, she's been the first person to be excited about me notbeing a doctor. She loves art and misses it in her life.--- Allison is another of Alice/xie_belle's creations, one of her elves.



I finally expanded my house, added on another floor. I was only able tomove around my light furniture since the longer I live in Hiddenbrook, theweaker my body gets from the exposure to Nuclear radiation.

---The athletic restriction makes furniture purchases tricky, having to makesure to buy one tile objects whenever possible so they can be moved later if needed.

WEEK 4



My newest friend is Abhijeet, we spend most of our time

playing chess at my new table. It's sad that no one reallychallenges me with chess any more but it's still a great wayto pass the time and talk.



My home has become the local hang out, people know that I

don't give in to the mafia, and that I have more amenitiesthan most due to my job. It's really nice to have peoplecome to me in this weather.



I went to work today as a muralist and came home as aconceptual artist. My boss is so impressed with me that she

says the next move I make career wise is to move on to domy own work* and I sort of agree with her. Sometimes I feeltoo restricted in my current job.---*Mara is now at Level 9 in the artist career, only 1 promotion to go before the hopelessness restriction is

lifted. :)



Mara only has 2 more days of work this week to get promoted to the top, and 7 days until she's an elder, so shestarts hitting up the elixir of life.



Another Tuesday comes, but this Tuesday I have to work, soI only had a little time to call people to chat, and no time

to invite Gerry over, which I regret.---Mara had a productive 2 hours and 45 minutes, sherekindled 2 friendships to ensure having enough friends for a promotion.



Artist & HopelessnessRestrictions l ifted

Now, for those of you not familiar with the Apocalypse challenge rules, I'll giveyou a run down of what The Hopelessness and Artist restrictions were, well,

restricting.

Hope lessness

-Mara couldn't have Gerry move in with her, and she couldn't have any pets.-Family Aspiration perks couldn't be “purchased”

Art i s t“Imagination is more important than knowledge” –Albert Einstein“With survival on everybody’s mind, the arts have virtually disappeared overnight. People are more worried about finding their next meal than attendinga concert in the park or buying art.”- No decorative objects could be purchased or displayed, including crafted artobjects.-No objects can be purchased or used to increase creativity except for thecomputer.



I've sort of become a legend here in Hiddenbrook, so muchso that the town has ordered easels to be constructedagain. And of course I picked one up.The first thing I started on is my portrait. With no cameras,it's the only way I can record how I looked for my greatgreat grand children.---The art restriction is sort of silly to tackle first, but atleast I'll have family portraits.



I can't believe that I have to wait until Tuesday to call Gerryto tell him the good news. The news that I feel confident inhim moving here now, and for us start a family.

At least I have my friends, Anna and I are as close as ever.



It's finally Tuesday.“Gerry, I have great news, I hope you can come overtoday?”“Yes, I can, I have some great news for you too when I getthere, I'm on my way now”

WEEK 5



“Mara, don't get started on that again, wherever you are, iswhere I'll be.”“So, you'll move in with me then?”“Yes, I will, I will right now matter of fact.”



Before I knew it, it was like Gerry had grown up before myvery eyes. He's such a loving, trusting man. I can't wait tohave a family with him, even in a less than desirable place.

Well, things can only get better, right?
