Message from the Chair . . . .

The autumn term has flown by, I’m not sure is this is a sign of getting older, or just that I have been exceptionally busy. I don’t know whether any of you remember seeing reports a few years ago telling us how technology would allow everyone to have more leisure time with plenty of money to spend. In reality it would seem that the technology advances have brought us more challenges, making everyone learn a far wider range of skills and take on an increasing amount in their roles. We are all expected to have multiple skills, and take on everything from project management to financial planning to HR. Remember the saying ‘jack of all trades and master of none’ however this is no longer an option as we all face the continuous battle to try to keep up with the new demands asked of us.

In October I was fortunate to attend and speak at the NIPPA conference in Queenstown, New Zealand and meet many of our friends and colleagues on the opposite side of the world. It was a fantastic experience and wonderful opportunity. A full article and some pictures appear later in this newsletter. It’s always great to see how others deal with the challenges that face us. NIPPA share the same goals as our group although their geography is very challenging for arranging meetings.

The executive met up in Harrogate in August to continue the planning for our 2013 conference: 2020 Vision. I know many of you have already booked, and suppliers and exhibitor spaces are also filing up, but if you haven’t yet booked your place please fill out the booking form asap.

Some of you may have missed the news that I am standing down as Chair of the APME at the 2013 conference; I really have loved my time as Chair of the group, and I feel very privileged and humbled to have held this office in such a fantastic and talented group of individuals. However I will have completed four years, plus a year as deputy when I did actually deputise!! I feel the time is right to move on and let someone else take up the reins. If there are members of the group who have not yet been active on the executive I would encourage you to volunteer, I have gained a lot in confidence and knowledge through working with the executive as well as making some wonderful friends. I still very much plan to stay an active member in the future, as I believe it is an invaluable network for Print Managers, and I continue to benefit from my membership. I’m quite looking forward to the 2014 conference when I can actually relax and enjoy the sessions without worrying about anything going wrong.

I am also getting married this month so this will be the last newsletter where I write as Rebecca Hanlon, so its changes all around. I’m looking forward to all the festivities, those of you who know me understand that I like a good party, and I’m fairly used to the planning, it’s a bit like organising a conference, without Roy helping, and with the downside is having to pay for everything myself!

I hope you all have a successful and happy 2013.

Rebecca

The University of Sheffield - Yorkshire Regional Meeting

It was great to see so many faces at the Yorkshire regional meeting in November. The day started with a tour of the Print & Design Solutions facilities which was like seeing ‘children in a sweetie shop’ exploring for the first time! Paul Tetley, Print Manager hosted the tour and talked about how he has developed the business and raised the profile of the service on campus. The tour took in the Graphic Design Studio and wide format printing service where there has recently been investment in a HP Z6200 60” latex ink printer. Paul explained how this equipment had increased business due to the speed of the kit and the range of substrates he can now offer to customers. This has somewhat negated the need for laminate finishes, therefore they now have more productive hours to produce work and this has also reduced their environmental impact.

The members were interested in the range of Varsity Gifts the service made available to staff, students and visitors and which included a ‘Made in Sheffield’ range which was very popular at the Graduation Ceremonies. In the print room area Paul walked the members through the thesis binding section, finishing equipment and finished with a demonstration of the Process Manager workflow used on the Xerox equipment.

During the afternoon the regional meeting took place, we opted for an informal agenda which worked really well. There was lots of discussion about the challenges we face and here are some of the topics we discussed:

• Open days

• Re-brand of Services

• Logistics of JIT Lecture Notes

• Printing student course work submitted electronically

• Working closer with marketing colleagues and investigating shared content editing for key publications

• Moving clicks from MFDs to Central Print Rooms

Everyone commented that they all got a great deal out of the day and took away lots of ideas and topics for further discussion. And it’s good news, there will be another regional meeting in the spring which will be hosted by Alison Freer from the University of Loughborough — thank you for being a willing volunteer.

Cheers Janine

APME Executive meeting in Harrogate

August 30th, 2012 saw the APME

Executive meet at the Majestic Hotel

in Harrogate. Again, there was a full

agenda with much to discuss which

included: finance, executive elections,

membership flyer, newsletter, training

new (APME) constitution and future

conferences. Due to our size it is

becoming more difficult to find a new

hotel and location, so we may well be

visiting some of our past hotels for

future conferences. Please do have

a think and let us know if any have

stood out. However, much discussion

also centred on the fact that Rebecca

is now standing down as chair and

who will take on the challenge to fill

this empty void?

Stares, Janine Barraclough, Rebecca Bloyce,

Francis Reis, Simon Hampton-Matthews, Steve

Thomas, Nigel Phillips and Chris Ward

We then moved on to discuss

conference planning for 2013. There

were several themes nominated;

with the unanimous favourite being

2020:Vision, which had been suggested

by Chris Ward. However, the title was

a small part in one sense as we then

needed to discuss appropriate speakers

and in particular the keynote speaker

who will set the theme of the whole

conference. The exec also considered

who we would ask from overseas to

represent NIPPA and ACUP. One thing

is sure: on the Sunday night a Yorkshire

band will be performing for us and for

the fancy dress party? Wait and see.

The executive were impressed with

the Majestic and are looking forward

to the 2020:Vision APME Conference

being held there. Below are some of

the photos taken by myself and Simon

Hampton-Matthews.

This year I was delighted to accept the invitation to speak to our colleagues and friends at the NIPPA conference in October. The theme for the Conference was Peak Performance.

I had been led to believe, by some of my APME colleagues that it was spring in New Zealand, however after a number of long flights and dressed suitably in flip flops, we flew over snow capped mountains and landed in the picturesque and freezing Queenstown, the skiing season had finished a day before we landed. We had allowed a couple of days before the conference to acclimatise so this gave us time to buy some fleeces, coats and beanie hats!!

It was great to meet up with Karen Farr, Justine Wilson and Rob Roberts who have all spoken at our conferences the last few years, and their warm welcome and hospitality was very appreciated. Justine is getting married in February to her fiancé Ollie, we wish them every happiness.

The conference started with a bang as MC John McKenzie led a motivating session challenging everyone to see themselves as a brand. The Keynote Speaker was Steve Price, an Australian Rugby League player who captained The New Zealand team the Warriors. Steve spoke about his career and decisions and how to work to achieve your goals in both sport and business. Maury Kane from ACUP, who spoke at our Barnsley conference, was also a guest speaker and it was good to meet up with him.

Whilst the conference in many ways is similar in format to our own one striking difference is that the suppliers at the NIPPA conference are also delegates and were included in all the sessions, including an afternoon when there were several supplier led sessions. There was also an excellent Question time style panel session where there was lots of topical debate.

Both Maury and I certainly had to work for our living, and we both made presentations, were judges in the Poster Design Competition, including announcing the winners (we did this in true Oscar style), and also were on the Question Time Panel, and judging the best fancy dress.

The social side of the conference included the award night and Gold Rush fancy dress. I came away with a few new friends, some good ideas and a real insight into NIPPA and the wonderful members.

When we left Queenstown the day after the conference it was with a smile and a sigh that it was over. We had managed to see some beautiful sights and had some real fun. I would certainly encourage any members of APME to consider attending NIPPA or ACUP conferences as it is a fantastic opportunity.
