2016 INTERNATIONAL PEANUT FORUM (IPF) – MADRID, SPAIN

Planning is now underway for the 2016 IPF which will be held 13th – 15th April 2016

at the NH Collection Hotel in Madrid, Spain.

This biennial meeting is the only international meeting devoted entirely to peanuts. The Forum brings together the world peanut in-dustry, including all major producing coun-tries, importers, brokers, dealers, shellers, manufacturers and service providers such as equipment suppliers and laboratories. We ex-pect that the 2016 event will attract over 300 industry members who will benefit from a meeting that provides a nice balance between conference presentations and networking social events. It is a very cost-effective way to see customers and suppliers in one venue at one time.

The NH Collection Hotel in Madrid is conveniently located for restaurants, bars and the city centre and has state of the art facilities and bedrooms as well as offering a pool, spa, rooftop ‘beach’ and 3 padel courts.

Registration for the 2016 IPF will open in the latter half of 2015 and information on the event including a link to book hotel accommodation, and details on exhibition and spon-sorship opportunities, will be distributed via e-mails, newsletters and through our web-site during the year. If you didn’t attend the IPF in Rome this year and would like to know what you missed, please use this link to a brief video of the event: http://www.peanut-susa.com/ipf2014.html

We hope to see you there in 2016!

eTDE

USDA-FAS indicated last week that they are considering a proposal to extend the eTDE funding for six more months in 2015. Industry funds will be used until the award is

announced. All major functions are working successfully with over 600,000 documents uploaded to date. A couple of peanut projects will be addressed in early 2015 as funding is received.

Japan and Canada are in discussions with the USDA-FAS to begin using the system in 2015. Work is continuing with Russia and Mexico to add these ports/border crossings over the next few months.

All peanut exporters to the EU should now have access to an electronic copy of all docu-ments needed to enter EU ports. There are seven primary ports that are now testing these documents. They will require both a paper copy and an electronic copy for a few months until they are comfortable with the new electronic system. Please notify Howard Valentine of any issues with acceptance of the electronic documents.

A newly developed web service is sending data from the eTDE system to the EU’s TRACES system. The system can now complete entry documents electronically for Dairy products. Other commodities including peanut will be added.

The eTDE website home page has also been translated into multiple languages. The pro-grammers have completed an archive system that will allow older documents to be moved off the active system. The documents will still be available within 24 hours by sending an email to the ARS technical administrator. Additional enhancements to the system to make it more user friendly are also being worked on.

The eTDE Task Force met in Washington in early December. Steve Calhoun is currently working with five US peanut product manufacturers to get them registered so US compa-nies emailing documents to manufacturers can use the eTDE system to supply the needed documents without having to scan the grade and aflatoxin certificates already on eTDE. If you need assistance in get-ting registered with eTDE or need information please con-tact Steve Calhoun ([email protected]).

The attendees also discussed possible issues with the HS Code for blanched peanuts. Louise McKerchar, APC staff, will spearhead the effort to get the confusion between US and EU requirements resolved. The Peanut Quality docu-ment was also discussed and hopefully the issues can be resolved by January. All state FSIS grade certificates are being uploaded, as well as, all aflatoxin certificates (US & EU) by JLA.

TOTE BAGS

The Totebag Task Force met in Washington on December 10. A full list of the test results of the totes primarily used by the industry was distributed at the meeting.

If you would like to have an electronic copy of the latest results, please contact Harry Crozier at Birdsong Peanuts ([email protected]), the co-chair of the Task Force. Some of the tested bags did not meet all the standards but follow up tests indi-cate all the issues have been corrected

The attendees spent time going over a new issue, elongation of the bags and polypro-pylene fraze. Several changes to the current specifications were proposed by Co-chairs Harry Crozier & Rhonda Starling. There were circulated at the meeting and the tote manufacturers saw no problem with them but, wanted to discuss with their engineer-ing staff. A January 6th conference call was set up to finalize these changes.

In other business, an absorbent pad for topping totes is being tested by the shellers. Results are not conclusive. Chris Butts, USDA-ARS announced the data on desiccants will be published in late December. Information will be sent to all exporters. Cold storage maximum temperatures were also discussed. The group discussed preliminary work that seems to indicate raising the temperature to around 50 degrees F would vir-tually eliminate condensation in totes loaded into trucks for shipment during the sum-mer months. Further testing at USDA Dawson and several shellers is ongoing.

Anyone needing copies of the latest totebag specifications should contact Howard Val-entine ([email protected]) or Christina Taylor ([email protected]).

THE PEANUT FOUNDATION

The additional sequencing and assembly by Hudson-Alpha, has begun on the cultivated species, Tifrunner. The final results should be obtained early 2015. They will also re-

sequence and assemble the two wild species once they are grown out in the greenhouse. This should allow easier assembly of the remainder of the tetraploid (Tifrunner) genome. Additional work is ongoing on collecting the data from the various RIL populations seg-regating for desired traits. Those with key traits have gone through seed increases and are available from Corley Holbrook for use in new variety development. These seed with key traits, both quality and disease resistant, will be sequenced next once the tetraploid genome is assembled.

The International Peanut Genome meeting is completed with much announced by the over 125 delegates from nine different countries working on peanut genomics. This meet-ing helps set the strategic plan for genomic research for the next five years. Hundreds of more markers were announced. Baozhu Guo, USDA-ARS, Tifton is charged with collecting all in one master list for the Initiative members. Most were developed from the complete genomes of the two wild species that are the parents of the current cultivated peanut.

In early December, the Peanut Foundation met in Washington to review the success of the projects funded in 2014. Nineteen researchers updated the industry with the results that covered new markers and traits soon to be associated with each other. Markers for early & late leafspot, TSWV, white mold, sclerotinia, seed size, and yield have been identified. While none of these are all the gene markers for these traits, more are in the pipeline.

The Foundation Board also met and approved the audited statement for 2014 and elect-ed new officers and Board members:

Chairman: Victor Nwosu, MarsVice Chairman: Alan Ayers, Bayer CropScienceTreasurer: William Pearce, Golden Peanut and Tree NutPast Chairman: Dan Ward, NCPP & NPB

New Board Members:

Alan Ayers, Bayer CropScienceJoe Bodiford, Georgia Peanut CommissionJim Elder, JM Smuckers & CompanyJaime Flaherty, Kraft Foods

The Board also approved $1,200,000 to fund new projects in 2015 with researchers to be notified as funding becomes available.

The OMNI Heart Trial [Optimal Macronutrient Intake Trial to Prevent Heart Disease] funded by the US National Institutes of Health studied generally healthy, black and

white residents from the Boston and Baltimore areas who were over 30 years old and all with raised blood pressure. Between 2003-2005 the OMNI trial used a randomised, 3-pe-riod crossover design of controlled feeding to compare the effects of macronutrients on blood pressure and plasma lipids. Three calorie-balanced diets were tested, all based on the Harvard DASH [Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension] pattern. One diet focused on carbohydrate, the second diet focused on protein (mainly from plants), and the third diet emphasised unsaturated fat from foods including peanuts which are well known for being high in healthy mono and polyunsaturated fats.

In a new analysis of OMNI data just published in the open access journal PLoS1, research-ers at Harvard and Johns Hopkins, assisted by colleagues at Wurzberg (Germany) and Wisconsin universities, looked at which of the three diet intervention groups had the best results in terms of levels of Lipoprotein(a) in plasma (N=155; 89 blacks, 66 whites). Lp(a) is a cholesterol particle known to be associated at higher levels with atherosclerotic cardio-vascular disease (CVD). The reasoning of the trial was that if one or more of the OMNI diets had only a slight effect on increasing Lp(a) levels, then this could be seen as reducing CVD risk.

All the diets raised Lp(a) to some extent compared to the baseline, although not to dangerous levels. The investigators found that the diet intervention emphasising unsaturated fat including from pea-nuts raised Lp(a) levels less than either the pro-tein or carbohydrate diet. Black people were also found to benefit from the unsaturated fat DASH diets more than whites.

The researchers concluded that the “results sug-gest that substitutions with dietary mono- and

polyunsaturated fatty acids in healthy diets may be preferable over protein or carbohy-drates with regards to Lp(a).” The DASH Diet is already peanut friendly, now we know why it is also the basis for lowering a significant heart disease risk factor.

December 13, 2014: the date the new EU-wide Food Information for Consumers (FIC) regulations (No 1169/2011) came into force throughout the EU’s 27 Member States.(1) To make this significant change in labelling and information availability about

allergens in foods other than foods available pre-packaged, the Commission, along with national food authorities and user-led food allergy organisations have produced a range of information available online. The UK’s Food Standards Agency material for local authorities and food businesses is a good example. (2)

A detailed Q&A paper is available from the Commission about the practical implementation and technical issues associated with the FIC Regulations (3)

Nutrition information for these foods has to be provided to consumers by December 2016. The Commission is consulting on how best this can be achieved.
