Few things in life are more arduousand exhausting than moving. While movinginto a new home can be exciting, theprocess of moving is rarely enjoyable. Suchis the reason many people turn to movingcompanies when it comes time to changeaddresses. However, moving companiesare an added expense and not right foreveryone. Many people choose to self-moveto save some money.
The process of self-moving can beintimidating, particularly for peoplewhose move will take more than oneday. Anticipating problems beforehand isoften a great way to ensure the move goesoff smoothly and with as little stress aspossible.
∙ Truck rental: When self-moving, manypeople find themselves in a race against
time to get everything packed onto andthen off the truck so they can return thetruck on time and avoid what is oftenhefty late fees. Such a race only addsmore stress to an already draining day.Particularly for people whose move willbe more than one day, inquire about howmuch it will cost to keep the truck anextra day. This will eliminate the stress ofgetting everything done by a set time.
∙ Map your driving route: Even if you’removing down the street, the route youtake might have to be longer than youexpect thanks to factors you didn’tconsider ahead of time. One of themore common problems self-moversencounter is low overpasses that theirtruck cannot fit under or roads thatdon’t allow commercial traffic. This can
be disastrous for a number of reasons. Ifnot anticipated beforehand, you won’trealize the obstacle until you drive up toit. Turning around a large truck on a busyroad can be challenging and dangerous.Driving on restricted roads can also earnyou a traffic ticket. Also, researching and finding a new
route can be time-consuming, a bigproblem if you need to get the truck backby a certain time. Combat such problemsbefore you encounter them by drivingyour planned route ahead of time.
∙ Cover your valuables: When self-movingfor the first time, many people areappalled as to just how dirty most rental

For those who rent, renters insurance coversdamage to or loss of your personal proper-ty. Whether you rent from a house owner, aproperty manager, or a university (as a stu-dent living in a dorm), consider purchasingrenters insurance.
Why do I need renters insurance?Landlords insure the physical apartmentbuilding against damage from occurrencessuch as fire, hail, and vandalism. But theirinsurance policy does not cover your belong-ings, so don’t expect the landlord to owe youpayment should anything happen. Anotherreason to get renters insurance is to protectyourself against any accidents caused by oth-er tenants.
Renters insurance can also protect againstliability lawsuits or medical bills of guestsinjured in your apartment. Some landlordsrequire you to purchase renters insurance. Ifso, this would be stipulated in your lease orlease riders.
There are two kinds of payouts:actual cash value and replacement cost cover-age.
Actual Cash ValueThis type of coverage pays an amount equalto the current cost to replace your items mi-nus the depreciated value.
Replacement Cost CoverageThis type of coverage pays you the amount itwould cost to replace your lost or damagedproperty. You only get the money if you re-place the items. There is also usually a limiton how much money you receive, and thepremiums tend to be higher.
I have a roommate? Do we each getour own policy? It depends on the policy. Some insurancecompanies offer one policy that covers mul-tiple people. Others require each person toget a separate policy.
What is rentersinsurance?

trucks are. If you haven’tplanned on covering up nicefurniture or other valuableitems beforehand, it can bea big waste of time diggingout blankets and coveringeverything up once you havethe truck and are ready to go.With respect to cleanliness, expect the worst out of a rentaltruck, and protect valuableitems accordingly.
∙ Load the heavy items at thefront of the truck: The “front”of the truck is the wall closestto the truck’s cab. Load theheaviest items, such as dressers, tables and furniture, on first. When packed tightly againstthe wall, these items won’tmove around once you startdriving. Certain items, such ascouches and mattresses, should
be turned on end so they takeup less space.
∙ Don’t be a hero: At times, you might be tempted to liftcertain items by yourself inthe hopes of trimming sometime from the move. However,
moving is a marathon, not atrack meet, and you don’t wantto waste energy that you’ll
need down the road. Heavieritems should always be loadedand unloaded by a minimumof two people.
∙ Lock it up: While movingtrucks come with a lever thatkeeps the door shut, theselevers aren’t locks. Anyonemoving overnight shouldpurchase a padlock to puton their truck to protectthemselves from theft whilethey sleep.
∙ Don’t forget entertainment:Oftentimes, a moving truckhas the most basic of radios, with no cassette or CD playerand sometimes only an AMradio. Anyone whose move isa considerable distance shouldbring along a radio with aCD player to help combat theboredom.

Is Your Landlord /Property aMember? The TAA lease is your guarantee that your most important legal•document is in compliance with all state laws and regulations.
TAA’s lease forms are highly recognized by consumers, judges and•legislators, are time-tested, and include substantial protectionsfor owners, as well as fair & equitable treatment of residents.
TAA’s forms are written in a more “plain English” style, which•helps reduce misunderstandings and confusion regarding rentalhousing forms.
Legislation supported by TAA has set the standard for security•devices (locks and other items) required in residential rentalhousing. Texas laws are among the nation’s toughest for requiredsecurity devices and for return of security deposits.
Members are provided resources and assistance to ensure that•members are operating effectively, legally and ethically.
TAA leases are updated every 2 years (after each legislative•session) to incorporate changes resulting from new laws.
TAA has been a key proponent of legislation that has increased•habitability and security standards for residents of rental housing.

Moving can often be a very stressfulexperience. Last minute details, finances, packing and unpacking is enough to driveanyone insane. The hard part is alreadydone, now you just need to start puttingit all together. Here is some advice to helpyou as you settle in after your move.Unpack one box at a time.
You might feel overwhelmed if you look atall your boxes and think that it all has tobe done at once. Face it, that’s not goingto happen. Unpack what you’re going toneed first, like your clothing, alarm clock, toiletries and a few dishes. After a fewhours of unpacking, relax and enjoy yournew space. Put clean sheets on your bedand get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow, unpack a few more boxes. Take a week orso to completely unpack.
Get to know your neighborhood.
Take a walk (or a drive) around your newarea and explore. Go to a bookstore andcheck out the local scene. Take a trial classat the gym and decide if you’d like to join.Go the community center and pick up acalendar of events.Meet new friends…but keep the old, too.
Keep your old contacts but one of thebest things about moving to a newneighborhood is meeting new peopletoo! Churches, community classes andvolunteer organizations are all great waysto meet new people.Establish a routine.
Get back into a daily routine that isfamiliar to you. If you’re used to working
out every morning before work, join agym. Prepare some of your favorite mealsand watch a television show you enjoy.Find the closest dry cleaners, grocery storeand post office so that running errandswon’t be like navigating through a maze.Take care of necessary tasks.
In about a week after your move, youshould make sure that all your post-movebusiness is settled. Each task you completewill bring you a sense of accomplishment. Each box you unpack is one less box. Takeeverything a step at a time and before youknow it, it will be done!
Take the hassle out of settlingin to your new apartment
