PREPARE YOUR HOME BEFORE YOU LEAVE FORSPRING BREAK WITH THIS CHECKLIST

_____ Ask a neighbor or friend to pick up any mail or packages that

will come while you are away._____ Shut off all lights. Leaving your outdoor light on an automatictimer is a good alternative to make it seem like somebody is home.

_____ Unplug all electronics this includes televisions, micro-waves and beauty appliances.

_____ Lock all doors and windows.

_____ Do not publicize that you will be away on social media.

_____ Store jewelry and all other valuables in a safe hiding place.

_____ Leave your curtains the same way you keep them when yourehome. Noticeable changes can alert criminals nobody is home.

_____ Remove the hidden key. Tis may help your roommates if

they forget a key during the week, but it is too risky for a criminal tond during a week when nobody is home.

_____ Consider investing in an alarm system. If this is too pricey, trick criminals by placing one of those home alarm signs on yourlawn.

_____ Notify your landlord you will be away. A lot of time thelandlord will occasionally drive by and keep an eye on his or herproperty.

College may expand future opportunities, butit also has a way of limiting time and money, especially when it comes to decorating livingspaces.

Furnishing apartments and new homes withthe hottest items from Pier 1 and Pottery Barnseems just a bit out of reach. However, there isno reason to fret. Students have demonstratedthat decorating can be done affordably and ef-fectively using a little creativity.

Jessica ungesvik, a junior from Columbia,Mo., is a graphic design major with little timefor Pinterest projects. Instead, she took her vinylrecords and displayed them as decorations.

Te graphics on the records are decorativein themselves so I decided I wanted to displaythem, ungesvik said. I ended up making two

display shelves that are about 5-feet long for 10of my records to sit on.

ungesvik bought the supplies at the Com-mon Shop on campus and was able to make thetwo shelves in 45 minutes. In the end it only costher $6 for the wood. For those with a little moretime on their hands, planning affordable proj-ects can be fun. essa Littlejohn, a sophomorefrom Wichita, was inspired by Pinterest to createwall decorations from shoebox lids.

I saw on Pinterest how to take old shoeboxlids and cover them with fabric for wall decora-tions, Littlejohn said. I had plenty of old fabric

and lids so I gave it a shot and it turned out waycuter than I expected.Littlejohn was able to take things she already

has in her apartment and turn them into decora-tions she gets to appreciate every day. Studentswho dont already have these items can use theirtalents or passions to make something unique

instead. Ian Lally, a senior from Olathe, has beenan artist all his life. Not only is he able to chan-nel those skills when decorating his home, butits an enjoyable project rather than a challeng-ing task.

I paint and that is my preferred type of deco-ration, Lally said. Depending on the size, apainting can take anywhere from a few hours todays or weeks.

Tere is no need to spend half of your pay-checks on furnishings that you can easily cre-ate yourself. Youd be surprised by how manydecorative options you already have around the

house. Just take a look around and become in-spired.

Te idea o living with the opposite sex is notalways something we would immediately vol-unteer to do. Having co-ed roommates is nota common occurrence, but how does it work?

aking the risk and living with someone o theopposite sex could make or break a relationshipit seems.

Audra Odeh, a senior rom Olathe, decided togive the co-ed roommate concept a tr y.

I had lived with gi rls in the past and I love my

girl riends, but there was always unnecessarydrama, or some o kind problem or issue, Odehsaid. I wasnt into it.

Odeh decided to live with three guys she knewrom high school in a house on Kentucky Street. I think guys are signicantly less dramatic

and controlling, Odeh said o her co-ed liv-ing situation. It was very much a relaxed andstress- ree environment. I learned a lot o di -

erent things. But Odeh wasnt the only one learning new

things. Her roommates Kyle Dewitz and MarlonAddison, both seniors rom Olathe, mentionedthat they learned a lot about the emale perspec-tive rom living with her.

She would give me advice on a Friday night

i I was dressed like a homeless man and shegave me dating advice i I was being a loser. Itwas great always having a emale perspective

around, Dewitz said. But there has to be downsides, right? Not ev-

erything can be per ect when your living situa-tion is the battle o the sexes.

Dewitz reminisces on the difficulties o shar-ing a bathroom with Odeh during the time theylived together. He said that he elt uncom ort-able using the bathroom knowing that he sharedit with a woman.

Afer living together or a year, most wouldwonder i this living situation had any effects ontheir riendship.

I eel like afer living together, Audra is amily.

Its like having another sister, Dewitz said. Addison and Odeh both agreed with Kylethat the three o them living together denitely

brought them closer as riends. Tese three no longer live together, but they

all would recommend living with co-ed room-mates and said they would in the uture i theywere given the opportunity.

It can be a lot o un and a co-ed roommatecan teach you a lot, Dewitz said.

And i youre having a hard time getting alongwith your current co-ed roommates, these threesay that communication is key.

Addison said that whatever the issue is, try totalk to them because most problems stem rommiscommunication.
