If an ICE official begins to ask you questions while you are walking down the street or in another public place such as a park, you can continue walking. ICE must allow you to pass by if they do not have a “good reason” to keep asking you questions. An example of a “good reason” is if you are leaving a place where they have previously found many undocumented workers. They cannot stop you just because you are dark-skinned or because you have a foreign accent.. Remember that you have the right to remain silent.

However, it is very important not to run. If you run away from them, you are giving them a good reason to arrest you.

SOCIALIZANDO A LAS MASCOTAS¿Alguna vez se ha percatado de que las mascotas tienen diferentes perso-nalidades? es maravilloso observarlas, quizás esto es en parte la razón por la que usted adoptó una mascota en su familia. pero mientras usted las observa ¿detecta algo de temor en su tan querida mascota? ¿De dónde viene este temor? Usted las adora completamente, les dedica un largo tiempo de atención y todo el cuidado adecuado ¿por qué son tímidas o temerosas?

Los expertos en animales ofrecen algunas ideas y recomendaciones sobre cómo hacer para que sus mascotas socialicen de una mejor forma. Usted puede hacer una búsqueda en Google de “socializando a las mascotas” y encuentra toda clase de información.

Es importante saber que algo de la timidez o temor puede ser realmente genético. SOcIALIzING PEtSever notice how pets have distinct personalities? it’s amusing to observe them, perhaps that’s part of the reason you adopted a pet into your family. But in your observations do you detect a fear in your beloved pet? Where does it come from? You love them to the moon and back, you give them lots of attention and all the proper care, why are they timid or frightened?

Animal experts offer some insights and tips on how to better socialize your pets, not only with people and other like-kind animals but with other breeds as well. You can google “socializing pets” and find all kinds of information.

It is important to know that some of the shyness or fearfulness can actually be genetic. Cats can inherit their shyness or outgoing nature from their father’s while dogs’ personalities usually depend on their breed. Some hide or shake and shiver when confronted with unfamiliar people or other animals while others will march right up to the new experience with tails wagging or leg rubbing.

StArt EArLyEarly socialization is key, when your pet is a puppy or

kitten, it is important to carefully expose them to people outside of your family and reward good behavior with a treat. Kittens need plenty of human time from three weeks on, they should be handled about 40 minutes a day to help them relax and become social with their humans. Use cat toys for play (avoid using your hands or feet) and be aware of your kitten’s reactions both positive and negative.

tEAcH yOur cHILdrENChildren can be scary to pets without realizing it.

They talk loudly and move quickly and can play a little aggressively without knowing it. It is important for parents to teach children proper behavior with pets while socializing the pets in the home. This will create a much more relaxed, positive and pleasant environ- ment for all.

bEcOmE A vOLuNtEErDon’t have any pets of your own? Can’t have pets in

your home? Consider volunteering at your local animal shelter. Those displaced pets need socialization as well. At the Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency Animal Care Services Shelter, there is a volun-teer program to take part in. They offer opportunities to play with and socialize cats of all ages. They also have dog walking crews that work with the pets to help them be positive and pleasant animals that anyone would be happy to adopt. It is a great way to volunteer, the rewards you reap are just as valuable as the service you give to the animals. Win-win for all. However, to enter places that are not open to the public, they must have a warrant or permission from the boss or owner. If ICE enters your workplace with or without a warrant, you always have the right to remain silent. They should only ask you questions if they have a good reason to believe that you are not a U.S. citizen. If all workers, documented or undocu-mented, behave in the same way or do the same thing (for example, remain silent and continue working), ICE will not have any good reason to arrest any workers.

IN tHE cArICE needs a good reason to stop you and

search your car. If ICE has a good reason for stopping you (for example, they see drugs in your car), they can search your car without a search warrant from a judge. If the police stop you, you must only show them your driver’s license and car registration. You do not have to show them any other papers. The police should not ask you any questions about your legal status in the U.S. because they enforce local law and immigration law is federal law, not local law. However, the police in many areas are cooperating more and more with ICE and being more aggressive. Police may require proof of your legal status, but remember anything you say can be used against you. So it is really important to only say your name and address to the police. You can remain silent and request an attorney before you answer any other questions from the police.

At tHE bOrdErYour rights at the border are different

than your rights in the rest of the U.S. The “border’ includes not only the line between the U.S. and Mexico or Canada, but also airports and areas close to the border, for example, the border checkpoint near San Clemente, California. In these border places, you must be able prove that you have legal permission to be in the U.S. or ICE can detain you to ask more questions. They can also search you or your bags without a search warrant. As always, you always have the right to remain silent.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a soldier, accountant, poet, playwright and novelist. He was born in Alcala de Henares in Spain in 1547. His literary masterpiece Don Quixote of the Mancha is not only a classic of Western literature, it is considered the fi rst modern novel. His other notable works include Entremeses and Novelas Ejemplares.

Cervantes’ father was a barber/surgeon and his mother came from a family of impoverished nobility. Not much is known of his early years. As a young man he went to Italy to study art, architecture and poetry. He enlisted in the Spanish marines in 1570. He was badly wounded fi ghting the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto, losing the use of his left hand. After recovering, he continued his military service until captured at sea by Algerian corsairs. Five years later he was freed through a ransom. Cervantes would later work as a tax collector and in Spanish banking industry. He was also a government purchasing agent, helping to outfi t the ill-fated Spanish Armada.

In 1584 he married Catalina de Palacios, a woman much younger than himself. It was at this time that he began writing plays and poetry. During that period writing plays was where the money was for writers. However he had no great suc-cess in that area and only two of his plays have survived down through the years. The same could be said of his poetry. It wasn’t until 1610 that Cervantes could support himself full-time through writing. It was his wife’s uncle that made him famous. This crazy old coot inspired the creation of the space-case Don Quixote. Cervantes’ man of La Mancha was a skinny old guy on a skinny old horse who was enamored by chivalry tales of days of yore. He came to believe he was one of the knights of the middle ages. (Schitzo Don Quixote was the world’s fi rst historical re-enactor.) Cervantes wrote the fi rst part of this novel in 1605. He wrote the second part in 1615.

Fun Facts about Miguel Cervantes:

Cervantes died within months of fellow playwright William Shakespeare’s death in 1616.

His work was largely forgotten within a generation. He was rediscovered by English writers in the late 18th century.

Sigmund Freud was greatly infl uenced by Cervantes’ Coloquio de los Perros (Conversation of the Dogs). He even learned Spanish so as to understand it better. Freud called it the true origin of psychanalisis.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra fue soldado, contador, poeta, escritor de obras y novelista. Cervantes nació en Alcalá de Henares, España, en 1547. Su obra literaria maestra “Don Quijote de la Mancha” no sólo es un clásico de la literatura occidental, es considerada la primera novela moderna. Dentro de sus otras obras de notoriedad se encuentran “Entremeses y Novelas Ejemplares”.

El padre de Cervantes fue barbero/cirujano y su madre provenía de una familia de la nobleza venida abajo. No se conoce mucho sobre los primeros años de su vida. De joven se fue a Italia a estudiar Arte, Arquitec-tura y Poesía. Se reclutó con la marina española en 1570. Fue gravemente herido en una batalla en contra de los turcos, en la Batalla de Lepanto, donde perdió su mano izquierda. Después de recuperarse, continuó con su servicio militar hasta que fue capturado en el mar por corsarios argelinos. Cinco años después fue liberado a través de un pago. Cervantes trabajaría posteriormente como recaudador de impuestos y en una industria bancaria española. También fue agente de compras del gobierno, ayudando a equipar al malogrado ejército español.

En 1584, contrajo nupcias con Catalina de Palacios, una mujer mucho más joven que él. Fue en ese tiempo cuando comenzó a escribir obras y poesía. Durante este periodo en el que estuvo escribiendo obras había dinero para los escritores. Sin embargo, Cervantes no tuvo un gran éxito en esta área y sólo dos de sus obras sobrevivieron a través de los años. Lo mismo pudiera decirse de su poesía. No fue hasta el año de 1610 que Cervantes se pudo mantener de tiempo completo a través de la escritura. Fue un tío de su esposa el que lo hizo famoso. Fue esta persona quien lo inspiró a crear la famosa obra de Don Quijote. El hombre de Cer-vantes de La Mancha era una persona vieja y muy delgada, con un caballo viejo y también muy delgado, quien estaba enamorado de las historias llenas de valentía de los días de antaño. Don Quijote llegó a creer que él era uno de los caballeros de la edad media (el esquizofrénico de Don Quijote fue la primera persona en recrear eventos históricos). Cervantes escribió la primera parte de esta novela en 1605 y la segunda parte en 1615.

Hechos curiosos de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra:

• Cervantes murió unos meses después de la muerte del escritor de obras literarias William Shakespeare, en el año de 1616.

• Su obra fue completamente olvidada durante toda una generación. Fue redescubierto por escritores ingleses a fi nales del siglo XVIII.

• Segismundo Freud se vio ampliamente infl uenciado por el “Coloquio de los perros” de Cervantes. Freud llegó a aprender español para comprenderlo mejor. Freud llamó a esto el origen del psicoanálisis.

As the son of Chinese immigrants, i’ve always felt comfortable with other immigrant communities. When i was a boy, my father would often welcome cousins from our village in China who came to the U.s., illegally, to seek a better life. Many years later, i know that my achievements are based on my family’s sacrifice and commitment. i see this story everywhere in santa Rosa Junior College’s Latino/a students of all ages and backgrounds, and in their families.

When I joined SRJC, I met many compassionate people at SRJC who had accomplished so much already to help Latino/a students. Under Ricardo Navarrette, our (now retired) Vice President of Student Services and Assistant Superintendent for 20 years, we significantly expanded help so Latino/a students would increase their success now and in the future. Ricardo introduced me to many leaders like Willie Tamayo of La Tortilla Factory and Herman G. Hernandez of Los Cien. Their friendships and guidance have provided important support for our work at SRJC.

In 2014, SRJC was named a Hispanic Serv- ing Institution (HSI); that meant that at least 25% of our students were Hispanic. We then applied for and received a large federal

grant, which has enabled us to expand educational opportunities and success for Hispanic and low-income students of all ages.

With dedicated faculty and staff, we have built our Santa Rosa Southwest Center into a thriving education site. We’ve grown our award-winning Puente Project and Dream Centers in both Santa Rosa and Petaluma. We’ve created MI CASA (Multicultural Innovation Center for Academic Success & Achievement) in Santa Rosa and Our House Intercultural Center in Petaluma to provide support, resources and welcoming spaces for Hispanic and other students.

Under the leadership of Pedro Avila, our new Vice President of Student Services, we are reviewing our services closely, to ensure our students’ success in education and beyond. Through our new Regional Adult Education Programs, we’re partnering with the Graton Day Labor Center to provide non-credit classes for people to learn English and job skills. There is so much more! Como hijo de inmigrantes Chinos, siempre me he sentido cómodo con otras comunidades de inmigrantes. Cuando era niño, mi padre con fre-cuencia recibía a los primos de nuestro pueblo en China, los cuales llegaban ilegalmente a los e.e. U.U., buscando una vida mejor. Años después, yo entiendo que mis logros están basados en el sacrificio y compromiso de mi familia. Veo esta historia por todas partes en el santa Rosa Junior College con los estudiantes latinos de todas las edades y antecedentes y con sus familias.

Cuando me integré al SRJC, conocí a mucha gente compasiva que había logrado mucho para ayudar a los estudiantes latinos. Con la guía de Ricardo Navarrette, nuestro Vicepresidente de Servicios Estudiantiles y Superintendente Asistente durante más de 25 años (ahora retirado) expandimos la ayuda de manera significativa, para que los estudiantes latinos pudieran aumentar sus posibilidades de éxito ahora y en el futuro. Mi CAsA opening: Luz navarrette was asked to bless the center and part of the blessing was to clear the energy of the space using the sacred herb sage. The second part was to cleanse the energy using water that was blessed by indigenous elders from around the world. The water blessing involved the sprinkling of sacred water with the sacred herb “ruda”. After the blessing of the space Luz went around the room and blessed everyone in the circle. Vea la pág. XX


¡Qué Sabor! Residente, Residente • Reseña /Album review Por Bryan Chávez Castro

A DnA test sent René perez-Joglar on a self-discovery journey follow-ing his ancestry to remote places around the world. he lived and made music with the locals and crafted his much anticipated, self-titled de-but under the name of Residente, leaving his irreverent Calle 13 days behind. The album, with all its flaws, is still a reminder of Residente’s status as one of the leading visionaries of Latin-American music, and a colorful celebration of diversity.

Embarking on this journey was a heavy concept from the beginning. The idea of making music inspired by cultures around the world and throwing them into a singular body of work was a tough challenge, and its concept was directly tied to an unavoidable flaw: its incoherence. However, the diversity of the album is one if its strongest suits, and the richness of the sounds mirror the journey its creator went through, which, in the end, is a major success.

The album starts with an intriguing story about Residente. Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer of the acclaimed Broadway musical “Hamilton,” raps about the way he and Residente

met as admirers of each other’s work, and how they later discovered they were cousins. A perfect introduction to the album’s themes of ancestral lineage and connectedness.

The lead single “Somos Anormales” is a catchy ode to the world’s human diversity while challenging the perception of normality. “Una Leyenda en China” is the album’s biggest misstep, a distinctively Chinese track that doesn’t sound inspired, but replicated, and that has no personality. However, it is followed by a strong, catchy, animated song, which is arguably the best song on the album: “Dagombas en Tamale.” It’s the album’s concept’s at its creative peak, and It features a vocal sample of a Dagomba song from the north of Ghana, but it modernizes it with a tight, rich production with heavy tribal sounds and pop sensibility.

“Desencuentro” marks the album second half. This mellow ballad is the breathing moment of the album; a somber piano melody and a romantic, dramatic performance with the help of the French singer SoKo. This moody, dark thread continues on “Guerra,” whose intro features choral music and unsettling vocal samples that sound like what a gothic cathedral in the Middle East would look like. On the same note, “Apocalíptico” follows the theme with an organ-

centered instrumentation, but with contemporary touches. “La Sombra” is the smartest song in the album, and the whole track is filled with

clever analogies about shadows and their nature. “Milo” is a song dedicated to Residente’s son, and its musicalized by a warm, maternal instrumental. “El Futuro es Nuestro” is a revival of Residente’s irreverent and wild beginnings as Calle 13. The closing song, “Hijos del Cañaveral,” is a ballad to Residente’s home: Puerto Rico. It serves as a landing spot after the several journeys the album creates with its sounds, textures and moods.

Residente’s self-titled embodies a strong concept, inherently incoherent, but grand and ambitious. It is inspiring for its humanity, and interestingly diverse. Although Residente is not a perfect album, it is the clear representation of its creator’s potential, and a great foreshadow of what’s to come from him.

El auto-titulado de Residente encarna un concepto fuerte, inherentemente incoheren-te, pero grandioso y ambicioso. Es inspirador por su humanidad, y curiosamente diverso. Jung era un destacado investigador científico que captó la atención de Sigmund Freud, el padre de la psiquiatría. Por años, ellos condujeron una colaboración duradera. Datos Curiosos de Carl Jung:• Jung era un niño raro. Él aprendió lo que era una neurosis cuando concluyó que los desmayos que le ocurrían cuando tenia que entregar tarea eran autoinducidos.

• A su madre la venían a visitar regularmente unos espíritus a su recamara. El joven Jung vio a uno salir de la recámara con la cabeza desconectada al cuello y flotando en frente del cuerpo.

• Jung manejaba una prisión en Suiza durante la Primera Guerra Mundial para los oficiales británicos que se cruzaban la frontera de las trincheras.

• En 1913 Jung apuntó notas luego de un brote psicótico y las mantuvo por 16 años en un cuaderno de cuero rojo, recordando los detalles de sus alucinaciones y por lo general otros incidentes como hombre demente. Se publicó en el 2008.

• Durante su primera visita a los Estados Unidos, Jung se juntaba con el Jefe Mountain Lake del Pueblo de Taos en Nuevo México. El jefe le dijo a Jung que él creía que los hombres blancos eran unos chiflados porque pensaban con el cerebro y no con el corazón.

• Uno de sus últimos libros, que se publicó en 1959, era Un Mito Moderno:de cosas que se ven en el cielo. Se trataba de platillos voladores.

Jung was a noted research scientist came to the attention of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychiatry. They conducted a lengthy collaboration for years. But their break came when Jung published Psychology of the Unconscious, which largely negated Freud’s central theory of sexual development. Jung’s ideas are pretty much mainstream today, but Freud along with most shrinks avoided him for a long time after that. The main concepts of Jung’s analytical psychology include the ideas of synchronicity, psychological complex, extroversion and introversion, collective unconscious and the archetypical phenomena.

Carl Jung Fun Facts:

• Jung was a weird kid. He learned what a neurosis was when he concluded that the fainting spells that happened when his school homework was due were self-induced.

• His mom was visited by spirits in her bedroom on a regular basis. Young Jung saw one coming from her room with a head detached from the neck floating in front of its body.

• Jung ran an internment camp in Switzerland during WWI for British officers who crossed over the border from the trenches.
