Abstract

An abstract is a summary of the paper that provides readers with a concise overview of the work. It is one paragraph and provides enough information to inform readers about the content so they can decide if they will read the full paper. It generally has five sections of one or two sentences each. The first sentence gives brief background and the second sentence states your thesis or the goal of your paper. The following sentences outline your method then the most critical learnings or results. The final sentence presents you conclusions or your thesis, if not stated earlier. The abstract is typed one double-space below the Abstract title on page immediately after the cover page. It is typed double space, block format, with no indentation on the first line. The abstract should be up to 150 words and approximately the visual length of this paragraph, which is 150 words.

Full Title of the Research Paper Typed in Upper and Lower Case Letters

The text of the paper begins on the third page of the document. Use a page break (or section break new page) between the cover page and the Abstract and between the Abstract page and the first body page to be sure the pages correctly align on any computer.

Begin the body of the paragraph immediately double-spaced below the full title of the paper, with no additional space between the title and the body. Note that the title is typed in plain text, using upper and lower case letters but no bold, underlining, or similar text features. Continue each following paragraph double-spaced and indented with no additional space between paragraphs. The first line of each paragraph of the body should be indented five spaces or one-half inch. Check your computer settings to make sure you are using United States English standards. In addition, check your formatting to ensure your paper type is US Letter and you have 1 margins all around, text aligned left with ragged right margins. Do not insert returns or page breaks in the body of the research paper, and allow the content to break naturally across the pages.

Ensure the use of quotation marks and attributions for all quotes, and correct in-text citations for all quotes, summaries, or paraphrases. All references cited in-text must be listed on the References Page, and all materials listed on the References Page must be cited in-text. Remember to use a page break between the end of the research body and the References page.
