Basic ChemistryUnit #1 – Part 2

Page 2: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

branch of science dealing with the structure, composition, properties, and reactive characteristics of substances, especially at the atomic and molecular levels

RXNs are constantly happening in the human body

Define Chemistry

Page 3: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

Matter – “stuff’ of the universe, occupies space and has mass, has three states

Energy- massless and doesn’t take up space, ability to do work, can change from 1 state to another

6 types of energy mentioned in the textbook (page 28)

What is Matter & Energy?

Page 4: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

Elements – one or more elements make up matter, cannot be broken down any further by ordinary means, ◦Need to know O,C,P,K,N,S,H,Ca,Na,Cl,Mg,I,Fe

◦96% of body weight C,O,H,N

Composition of Matter

Page 5: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

Atoms – make up elements and make them unique, contain protons, neutrons and electrons

Atomic symbol – are abb. for the name

Atomic number - # of protons, can’t change

Atomic mass – protons added to neutrons

Page 6: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

As a class, come up with a method to show all of the elements and information provided on page 30 of your textbook.

Be sure to also show the proportion of each element compared to the next.

Be creative and work together.Everyone must participate. This will be displayed.

Elements – Human Body Activity

Molecule – 2 or more atoms combine chemically

Compound – 2 or more different atoms bind together to form a molecule

Molecules & Compounds

Bonds – energy relationship keeping electrons of atoms together, 3 main types (hydrogen, covalent, ionic)

Bonds & RXNs

Page 9: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

Lack C and tend to be small, simple molecules

Ex: water, salts and some acids and bases

Inorganic Compounds

Page 10: A&P Unit#1 Basic Chemistry

Contain C

Ex: carbs, lipids, proteins and NA

Organic Compounds

For your assigned macromolecule, read the assigned text and perhaps complete some research.

Prepare a PowerPoint that covers the information. This presentation should include diagrams, charts, etc… 12 slide requirement (min.)includes title slide and citations slide

Prepare a ‘cheat sheet’ of the 5 main facts/definitions. (Copies will be made and distributed to the other students after the presentations)

Present your information to the class.

4 Major Macromolecules Activity
