Textbook Unit 1 Analysis -In this course, it is incredibly important that you not only read the textbook, but that you are able to comprehend what you read and remember it. Complete the assignments very closely. Be prepared for a quiz on this material in the first few days of school.

● Read all of Unit I & Answer the provided questions below in complete sentences. 1) Module 1

a) Define all terms in BOLD. b) What were the theories of each of the following and how did they

contribute to the development of psychology: Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Descartes, Francis Bacon, and John Locke.

c) What were the three key advances that helped psychology develop from its prescientific roots to the beginning of modern science?

d) Compare and contrast the two early schools of psychological theory- structuralism and functionalism.

e) What are the beliefs and ideas held by each of the following schools: behaviorists, psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive, and neuroscientific?

f) What did each of the following theorist contribute to the evolution of psychology: Wilhelm Wundt, Edward Titchener, G. Stanley Hall, William James, Mary Calkins, John Watson and Rosalie Rayner, B.F. Skinner, Sigmund Freud, Carl Rodgers, Abraham Maslow.

g) Essential thought questions- Is psychology a science? What questions can psychologists better answer than scientists?

2) Module 2 a) Define all terms in BOLD b) Summarize the nature-nurture debate in psychology. c) In what ways did the ideas from Darwin influenced the nature v.

nurture conflict in psychology? d) Describe each of psychology’s three main levels of analysis- the

biopsychosocial approach. Why do psychologists prefer to use this level of analysis on behavior or mental processes? How would it explain depression for example?

e) Essential thought questions- How do both nature and nurture influence behaviors and mental processes? Why would a psychologist be interested in behaviors and mental processes that are not about mental illness?

3) Module 3 a) What are several main differences between the basic research

subfields and the applied research subfields? b) Essential thought question- How can these professionals use their

knowledge of psychology to help people live better lives?

● Read & write out 10 key ideas or questions you may have from the article in your own words, in complete sentences. (Reading can be found on page 5-12 of this packet)

● Write the answer the following essential thought question-What does this article reveal about psychology’s big question regarding the interplay between nature (your genes) and nurture (your environment and upbringing)?

Assignment #3, Due on the first day of school, counts as a test grade. Please type this assignment. You should also consult the Writer’s Resource section under the Library/Media on the school’s website. Draft an introduction essay using the following requirements:

I. Use well written, complete sentences! Use a formal voice. Do not abbreviate words. Use spell check. This is a professional communication similar to what you would use with a college or boss.

II. Use 12 point font, 1.5 spacing. Response should not be more than 2 pages typed. III. In approximately 2-3 paragraphs introduce yourself and tell me about yourself. Some

ideas include but not limited to: a. What do you like to do (hobbies, music, sports, instruments played, other

interests) b. Do you have a job? What is it? What is your plan for the next 10 years? c. Tell me about your family and home (Mom? Dad? Guardian? Siblings? Pets?

Neighborhood?). What are some things that you like about your family? d. Are you active in extracurricular activities in school/church? What are they?

How are you involved in school? Your community? e. What is important to you at this point in your life? f. Why did you decide to take this class? g. What are your expectations for this course h. Any addition information you would like to share or need me to know about you? i. These are only examples, put some creativity into this! Exercise your brain a

little.

IV. In approximately 1-2 paragraphs, connect the introductory material you read to your own life.

iii. things you do in order to ensure you are successful in class, iv. your weaknesses/strengths as a student- how have these aspects of your

personality been influenced by nature ( your genetics) and nurture ( your environment)?

V. Further instructions

a. All work should be completely neatly, with your name and a title/heading at the TOP of each assignment.

b. Each assignment should be completed on a separate sheet of paper. Work is to be done on lined paper and turned in with a clean edge (Please get a notebook that has removable pages). Please be mindful of handwriting!

c. Students should come to class on the first day ready to turn in each assignment otherwise it will be considered LATE.

d. Allow approximately 3-5 hours e. The grading rubric below will be applied to the introductory essay
