AP PHYSICS 2
SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
Welcome to AP Physics 2! It will be great to see you again. In Physics 2 we will cover Electricity
and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, Fluids, Light and Optics, and Modern Physics (Relativity,
Quantum Mechanics and Nuclear Physics). The book we will use is College Physics, 3rd Edition,
by Knight, Jones and Field. You have access to the book online as an eBook. You will also do
your homework online.
You need access to a computer with an internet connection. If you do not have access to a
computer with an internet connection at home, contact me at 918 366‐2222, extension 2491.
Leave a message and I will get in contact with you so we can make other arrangements.
Summer Assignment
Your summer assignment is to:
1) Register on Mastering Physics and join this course;
2) Complete the assignment by the Sunday after we return to school.
The online assignment will be worth 100 points as a homework grade. You will have to be
registered on Mastering Physics and enrolled in this course in Mastering Physics to complete
your assignment. It is due at midnight on Sunday, August 19 at 11:59 p.m. Any questions
answered after that time will be worth 10% less per day down to 50% of the original points.
Be sure and start the year out right by doing your work before school starts.
1. Register on Mastering Physics. You need a new account for Physics 2. Connect to
www.PearsonSchool.com/Access to register. Enter the first 6 letters of your access code
(SSNAST). On the next screen, choose your book from the Covered Titles, Science book
list: Knight/Jones/Field: College Physics, A Strategic Approach 3e MasteringPhysics.
You will then see the following message (notice the book cover so you do not get the
wrong edition):
Click on the Student Registration and do two things: 1) Click to create a new account
and password. (Write down your login and password so you don’t lose it!) Then enter
the Student Access Code:
SSNAST-LEVEE-NEWSY-JUMNA-HELOT-DICES
You will then complete your registration information with your name and school (zip
code is 74008).
2.) Then log out of that website and logon to the website: MasteringPhysics.com.
When you login to Mastering Physics, you will be asked if you have a Course ID. Click
yes and enter the Course ID:

2. Learn to Navigate Mastering Physics
You should then be in Mastering Physics. You should then see a screen like the
following:
On the left is the Menu. From this you can select your Assignment Page, the Textbook,
the Study Area and the Course Materials. To remove the Menu, click on the 3 white
lines at the top left.
Course Home
This is your Course Home. Your upcoming assignments will be listed here. You will also
see any messages that I send you on this page. Notice that you have one assignment
due by 11:59 pm on August 19, 2018 , the first Sunday after school starts. Normally I
will enter an assignment about a week before it is due and the assignment will be due at
11:59 pm on Sunday. Don’t wait until the last minute to start your assignment. Do a
little each night during the week and your homework will be a lot easier.
When you open the assignment, you will see any messages that I left for you and the
questions for you to answer. You can answer the questions in any order. Note that you
will get full credit for only those questions finished correctly and on time. Any questions
completed after the due date will lose 10% per day up to 50%. You will be able to do any
late assignment for partial credit.
Scores Tab
From the Menu, select the Scores tab and click on the 3 white bars at the top left
corner. You will get a screen like the one below:
The Scores tab will keep track of your scores for each of the assignments and you’re
your average. Normally assignments have questions for credit and a few extra credit
questions. There is usually a feedback question as well where you can let me know
what you found difficult and what you liked about each assignment.
eText
From the Home Page, select the eText tab. You will immediately open a new screen
with the course textbook. You will get a screen like the following:
Your complete text is online and available to you at all times. Of course, you can check
out a textbook if you prefer or if you don’t have access to the internet. The upper left
corner has the 3 white lines that accesses the menu for the textbook.
Clicking the 3 white lines gives the following menu. The Table of Contents is the menu
item you will use the most. The Table of Contents allows you to select any chapter and
section in the book. Simply click the Table of Contents and scroll down the chapter you
want.
For example, if you want to find a section in the Chapter 1, click on the right arrow next to
Chapter 1 which will give you the contents of the chapter.
Bookmarks is the list of bookmarks you set by pressing the bookmark button on the
right side of the page.
You can use bookmarks to get back to a page you were reading if you jump forward to another
page.
Highlights and Notes is a list of the notes you made during your reading. Making Highlights and
Notes is explained later. They are all collected in the Highlights and Notes function.
The book has Class Videos and Video Tutor Videos imbedded in the text. These videos
are very helpful in understanding the material.
You can also connect to the videos from the Study Area. Each Chapter has a list of the
videos relevant to the Chapter.
You can also highlight your text and leave notes in your eText. To highlight text, press
the left mouse button and hold while scrolling over the text. A dialog box will appear to
allow you to select the color of the highlight.
In addition, you can select Add Note to leave Notes to yourself relating to the text.
The text of the Note or Highlight will then be listed in the Highlights and Notes section
of the eBook menu.
Study Area
From the Menu, select the Study Area tab. The Study Area contains links to Prelecture
Videos, Video Tutor Solutions, End‐of‐Chapter Video Tutor Solutions, PhET Simulations,
and Class Videos.
1. Prelecture Videos. These are videos by Professor Jones that preview sections of the
Chapter. You should watch these before we start a new chapter.
2. Video Tutor Solutions. These are videos by Professor Jones that are linked in the
Summary of each chapter to discuss how to approach and solve problems.
3. Video Tutor Demonstrations. These are demonstrations that illustrate physics
principles.
4. End‐of‐Chapter Video Tutor Solutions. These are solutions to selected problems
from the end of the chapter.
5. PhET Simulations. These are games and activities that let you try different physics
principles. They are very good and I highly recommend that you try them.
6. Class Videos. These are videos by Professor Jones taken during class while he
teaches at Colorado State University. He explains and demonstrates the physics
principles that we are covering in each chapter.
3. Recommended: Review of Certain Parts of the book
I suggest that you review your book before we start. You need to know how to use
different parts of the book. Select the eText and review the text to become familiar
with its features.
I suggest reviewing the following portions of the book:
1. Inside Front Cover (both pages)
2. Front Matter, particularly the Table of Contents
3. Part 1 – Overview. This is the overview of the topics to be covered in this major part
of the book.
4. Review Chapter 10 – Energy and Work
We will start the year with a study of Thermodynamics. Thermodynamics is based on
the Conservation of Energy but applies the ideas to the use of heat. To be ready for
Thermodynamics, you need to review Chapter 10 – Energy and Work. We covered
Chapter 10 last year so it shouldn’t be difficult. I want you to review the following
videos which can be found in the Study Area for Chapter 10:
1. Prelecture Videos
a. Forms of Energy
b. Conservation of Energy
c. Work and Power
2. Class Videos
a. Basic Energy Model
5. Appendices – scan all the appendices to see the information provided there. In
particular note Appendix A – the Mathematics
6. Review Inside Back Cover (both pages)
In addition try this simulation:
1. PhET Simulation: Energy Skate Park
4. Recommended: Khan Academy Math Review
I’m sure you are familiar with Khan Academy. It is a free online tutorial website. It is
simply outstanding in Mathematics going from Counting for preshcoolers to Differential
Equations and Linear Algebra for college students. The Physics section is also very good.
The exercises are what make the Mathematics section so useful.
I strongly recommend that you refresh your knowledge on Vectors using Khan Academy.
I especially recommend that you cover multiplying Vectors with Dot Products and Cross
Products.

NOTE: Sal Khan talks VERY SLOWLY! You can speed him up by using the Settings button at the
lower right hand corner of the YouTube video screen. Select Speed and select the speed you
prefer.
