A word from Stewardship... We are proud of our vibrant Church and are encouraged to support the many facets of its Christian Mission. Various Committees over-see and facilitate participation in different parts of its Mission. Your Stewardship Committee, as part of its responsibility to encourage financial support from us for programmes and operating costs, offers an up-to-date way to simplify our financial commitment. We call it PARexcellence! PAR is the acronym for Preauthorized Remittance (a programme set up through the Presbyterian Church in Canada). For details, call Tiago at the Church Office (514-842-3431).

Music in Worship: Sunday, October 15, 2017 This morning’s recessional hymn and postlude are played by Organ Scholar Matthew Johnson.

Anthem: Os justi (Anton Bruckner, 1824–1896)Os justi meditabitur sapientiam: et lingua ejus loquetur judicium.Lex Dei ejus in corde ipsius: et non supplantabuntur gressus ejus. Alleluia. Inveni David servum meum, oleo sancto meo unxi eum. Alleluia. The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. The law of his God is in his heart: and his feet do not falter. Alleluia. I have found David, my servant; I have anointed him with my holy oil. Alleluia.

–Gradual, at the Feast of Doctors of the Church Anthem: My Soul’s Been Anchored in the LordAfrican-American Spiritual, arr. Moses Hogan (1957-2003)In the Lord. My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. Hallelujah. Before I’d stay in hell one day, I’d sing and pray myself away. Gonna shout and pray and never stop until I reach the mountain top.Do you love him? Oh yes! God Almighty? Are you anchored? My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. Will you serve him? Oh yes! God Almighty? Are you anchored? My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.Hallelujah, will you praise him? Oh yes! God almighty? Are you anchored? My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. Lord I’m an-chored, Lord I love you, yes I’ll serve you, Lord I praise you. Hallelujah! My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. About this morning’s choral and organ music…Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was for many years organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Nearly blind from birth, he was a renowned improviser, teacher and recitalist, and with great effort wrote down six mighty organ symphonies, many chamber and choral works, as well as dozens of other organ pieces. His six symphonies for organ in particular are milestones in the repertoire, translating the rich orchestral-symphonic tradition of Franck, Debussy and Ravel to the medium of the organ. Os Justi was composed by Anton Bruckner in 1879. Setting two verses from Psalm 37, it is the Gradual at the Feast of Doctors of the Church – learned theologians responsible for formulating Christian theology. Mu-sically, the piece appears simple but contains much learned counterpoint. The altos start the setting of the words ‘et lingua ejus…’ only to be fol-lowed after 2 bars by the trebles exactly a 5th higher, and then the basses and tenors. The strictness of the counterpoint serves as a musical metaphor for those who have contributed to sacred learning.

  • Moses Hogan (1957-2003) was a distinguished conductor, and arranger of traditional spirituals. He was a graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and studied at New York’s Julliard School of Music. He founded and directed The Moses Hogan Chorale and The Moses Hogan Singers and served as the editor of the new Oxford Book of Spirituals. His arrangements, such as My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord, are hugely popular and performed by high school, college, church, community, and professional choirs around the world. This work speaks to the power of music to inspire inner strength and renewal of faith. Following a mostly homophonic opening half in which the lyrics describe individual acts of singing and prayer, the arrangement builds to a frenzied coda featuring the call and response of the female and male voices. – JO

Next in music at St. Andrew and St. Paul...“Meet the Choir” continues this morning, with members of the Music Staff meeting and greeting the congregation in the narthex following the service. There is more than meets the eye (or the ear!) when it comes to the suc-cessful functioning of the choir of Saint Andrew and Saint Paul; there are singers in the mix, but there are other people, sometimes visible, some-times working very diligently behind the scenes, that help to turn a group of excellent singers into a well-organized and cohesive music-making ensemble! Please come and meet some of the movers and shakers in the Music Department in the Narthex after the service today. You might get the chance to shake hands with our talented organist and Director of Mu-sic, chat with our excellent Conductor, or perhaps meet the other members of the Music Department staff that keep the choristers in tune, in time, and singing sweetly every Sunday!Venez rencontrer l’équipe musicale de l’église; passez un moment agréable en parlant avec ceux qui font chanter notre chorale!

On Saturday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. a small ensemble from our Choir joins with the musicians of Serenata St. John in an Homage to Martin Luther, celebrating the unity of Roman Catholics, Lutherans and Presby-terians 500 years after the Protestant Reformation. Featured works include Magnifi cat à 6 (Monteverdi), J.S. Bach’s Cantata 80 and other master-works of Luther’s time. Guests of honour include Archbishop Christian Lépine, Mayor Denis Coderre, Maestro Kent Nagano, the Rev. Dr. Glenn Chestnutt and others. The service takes place at the sumptuous Église St-Nom-de-Jésus, 4215 rue Adam, near Métro Pie-IX. A freewill donation is requested. For more information, please visit www.rrc2017.ca.

On Tuesday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m., in honour of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the Choir of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul joins the musicians of Serenata St. John to present Bach’s Mag-nifi cat, BWV 243 under the direction of Jean-Sébastien Vallée, within a service of solemn vespers. The liturgy will be led by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Chestnutt, with the participation of guest Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican clergy. Under the ecumenical Reformation/Reconciliation ban-ner (uniting Roman Catholics, Lutherans and Presbyterians), and within the international “500 Years Reformation” conference hosted by McGill University’s Faculty of Religious Studies, this promises to be an evening of great beauty and historic signifi cance.
